How are your outdoor tom's doing, are they outside yet? inside itching to get out? or still hardening off, or even still in the packet?

My outdoor tomatoes are still in the cold greenhouse, they were only pricked out last week, so I don’t expect to plant out until mid to late May

I'm at the same stage; I'll start thinking about putting them out in a couple of weeks, probably under cloches at first.

Not put the outside yet but the ones in the greenhouse are great.
Had to tie one up already.

in 4" pots but about a foot high and flowers just beginning to show, and have had to pinch out already. Will plant out this weekend.

I only sowed mine a couple of weeks ago, so they are just developing their first true leaves. Kept in a cold greenhouse.

planted mine into the cold greenhouse on sunday but won't plant outside for a few weeks yet - I sure we could yet get a late frost

Yesterday I re-potted 2 of my toms from 5inch to about 10inch pots. They had been growing on the windowsill, and taking up too much room. So I moved them straight out to the garden. I buried the pots a little in the soil to keep them low to ground out of the way of the wind.
I checked them this afternoon, and they seem to be doing just fine. I guess only time will tell, and if we get a frost them it might be a different story.
After seeing how well the first 2 were doing, and how little light is now coming into the room due to the windowsills being packed. I have moved another 2 outside, but this time dug them straight into the ground.
I will check them tomorrow and update on how they are.

My plants have been spending their days outside for the last two weeks; first few days only during the sunniest part of the day, I bring them under cover (terrace, but outdoors) only on cold nights (when the forecast is under 10°C, just to be safe) otherwise they stay out all night - they're pretty strong and around 30cm tall - we've had almost no rain and almost no wind for weeks and temperatures up to 25°C.
I check the weather forecast every night. I'll probably give them another fortnight before potting them up into their final growing pots.

Mine are on the windowsill and are about 4" tall.
Going to have to repot them and hopefully get them out in the next two weeks....would be gutted if any frost got to them!

Thats now another one tied up (Tigrella).
Had to move the Garden Perle outside as its getting too big. I think fruit shall show soon.

Well I am the one to preach patience but I have put a few out. We have been here 13 years now and only one frost since then in May

The early outdoor types have been outside, in their 4" pots day and night since Sunday. I sowed too early and now need to slow them down.
They seem quite happy and it has stopped them from growing so rapidly. They will not be planted out on the allotment until the end of May and will be brought indoors again if the temp at night threatens to fall...

Some outside - including overnight - in the 'coldhouse', and some still indoors either waiting for me to get my act together, or tagged as my fall back plants if anything goes horribly wrong with the outdoors plants. Have to say that the ones roughing it outside look much healthier ;D

2" tall, on the windowsill. Just getting their first true leaves in, will be potting them up onto 3" pots at the weekend then I'll try them out in the mini greenhouse.
Off topic, but ... don't they smell luvly? ;D

Some of mine are desperate to go out, but it is really windy here and even with protection they may get battered. Hoping the weekend will bring less blustery weather.

mine vary from 4" to nearly a foot, they have been spending the days outside for about 3 weeks now and in the house again at night and the 5 biggest are now in their black buckets in a plastic growhouse at night and outside during the day, still going strong.

I've never know anything grow so slowly!!
I don't think I can provide the right conditions for tomato seedlings at home - I'll have to plant later next year and see if that helps.
At least they haven't all passed on like they did last year...

It sounds as though you may not be keeping them warm enough. Put them on a windowsill next year till we get some mild springlike weather, then keep them under cover till June.

wow peeps thought we were the only ones close to putting ours out, everyone on our site hasnt even sown radish yet!!!

My Marmande are flowering. I'll plant them out on the plot next week. The others (Gardener's Delight, Ailsa Craig and Tigerella) are much smaller, but have been out in my front cover day and night for the last two weeks, so I think I'll plant them out as well.
But never mind the toms, it's the aubs I can't keep up with! Some of these have flower buds:

WOW! When did you sow these? They are huge. I am embarrassed, my tomatoes and aubergines are still tiny.

My aubergines are minute. How have you managed to get yours to grow so much this early?

I sowed my aubergines (Diamond from The Real Seed Catalogue) 19th Feb. They germinated in a week (much quicker than the instructions on the packet indicated , and at at much lower temperature!). I kept the plants on a windowsill until 3 weeks ago, when they moved to the porch at night and front garden during the day. I don't have a greenhouse, so these will be planted in mini-tunnels on the plot in about 3 weeks time.
I've been amazed at the rate of growth. Peppers, which were sown just 2 weeks after the aubergines, are much smaller (you can see some at the bottom of the picture).

I planted mine a month later than you (evidently a mistake), but mine also came up quickly. I tried Diamond last year, messed up, and tried a long green one, also from Real Seeds (I forget the exact variety - I'm at work). They came up fast, but ended up on a windowsill that wasn't very warm; I'm having problems with the computer overheating, and had to keep the window open. They're now in a mini-greenhouse that warms up well in the sun, and growing slowly.

robert - off subject i know - if its a laptop try vacuuming the ventilation and fan inlet vents underneath, probably full of fluff.

It's not a laptop, thanks, and the interior is fairly clean. I've just been out and got a new PSU - the fan on the old one is definitely not working, and it's getting flaky in other respects. Right now it's running on the other fans I have installed. I just need a new (and better ventilated) case, and I'll have a lovely couple of hours at the weekend rebuilding it in its new home.

I'm back, after a lovely day with computer bits strewn all over the bed. The machine's now running in the mid to high 40's rather than the low 60's, and appears fit to face another summer.

I'm growing Tiny Tim and Micro Tomato. Both were sown in the second half of February and are still indoors. It's very windy here today so I won't be putting them out just yet. But as you can see from the first picture, they are going to have to go out soon! ;) G x

are the micro toms smaller than a cherry tom, georgie..the smallest ones we've got is garten perle :)
your plants look ace, our outdoor ones aren't half that tall

Hi Manics. I've never grown Micro before but the plants only grow to about 8" tall. I reckon the fruits will be about the same size as garten perle when they ripen. I have never known Tiny Tim (the other tomato) to get so tall and flower so early before. :o
Thanks Chris. I reckon it's the weather we've had this year. I wonder if it will affect the flavour?

May I ask what size pots they are in, I have just 2 of them as I just had to have...not used to anything this tiny, I don't know how much space they can get away with/without Thank you Jeannine

My toms have some sort of disease ???
The lower leaves have a kind of rust on them, the newer leaves are ok.
Any ideas please?

Tumbling Tom ( the only one out a whole pkt full to germinate ) has about six tomatoes on it ...but I dont think I,ll do tomatoes in hanging baskets again as it is such hard work watering , it just dries up too fast and I think the tomatoes will suffer eventualy from this . All the ones I,ve planted out are growing away fine ,as are the greenhouse ones in their large tubs...lots of flowers . :) Rohaise

I am so far behind it is stupid, I had to move house suddenly and missed my whole sewing routine. I have teeny plants a good month behind, I'm just hoping for some good weather in autumn.
When I moved I brought my compost heap with me, no way I was leaving that behind, some toms self seeded on top of the bins I had loaded into. These mystery toms are leading teh way for me, they're pretty much on schedule.

Ours are about 4`6" in the green house. really thick stems.

Most of my toms are tiny and still indoors. I sowed them last month.
A few that were sown in March have been planted out at the allotment and showing some flowers. They are Siberian, Japanese Black Trifle and Mexico Midget.

These are my "SubArctic" babies. I've put comfrey on the compost under the plants and some on top. Is this OK? Haven't done this before and gardening always seems to involve conflicting advice.

Mine are about the size of Andy's. If it does warm up tby the weekend, I'll probably start planting out, but I'm tossing up whether to start with the toms or the corn, which is about a foot high.

My toms are about 6in tall and have that i need to be put out look about them. :)

My toms are outside for three weeks now and are still going strong. They are between 30 cm and 45 cm tall (depending on variety) and the first flower trusses are showing.
The two plants that were damaged by slugs are also doing OK.
