Title: Up early on recycle day
Post by: cornykev on April 17, 2007, 21:45:17
A few weeks ago on recycle day, I noticed someone had left out 4 water bottles that fit on top of them water machines, I could only pick up 3 and left them in a workmates garden I was late for work so didn't go back for the other one. So now every recycle day I go early in case I have to come back home with any goodies.  ;D ;D ;D

Hi - I am a scavenger too!

My best acquisition was an old lobster pot from the beach but it took me ages to carry it back and it was pretty heavy and encrusted in barnacles.  Now it makes a brilliant cloche (covered in plastic) and protector (from animals or the like) without the plastic.

Another good one, I find, is the skips outside shops when they are refitting the shops.  Some of the display equipment is REALLY usefull either as supports, shelving or whatever.  Only problem with those is that they disappear pretty fast as well so you have to be quick!

Still scouting on recycle day, I've been snaring some three litre bottles, they've used for cloches on my sweetcorn while they are getting a bit stonger, because we've had some very windy days.  ;D ;D ;D

There is a big wheelie bin at our local tip which is for plastics, Bearded Wonder is not impressed when I scavenge for big bottles, but I have been successful on more than one occasion. ;D

Saw this and lots more outside houses awhile back. Can't think why someone would leave such handy things on the street, so I took one. Very handy to get home as it had wheels on. Went back for another a couple of hours later but they'd all disappeared!

I picked up a bread tray in the middle of the street - great for transporting plants to the plot without them falling all over the car!

Olive...You is in big bother. Those 'trays' are laid out by the department of the environment. They are reflectors for satellite bench-mark navigation which measure vital parts of the country to asses global depreciation in land-mass height.
Put it back...it's got a tracking device on it.....the men in Black will be visiting you and NOT knocking on your door....soon!

You better stay away from your plot on Tuesday afternoons then! That's when they beam in. They zapp the whole area, so if you get really big spuds and tommy's and if your carrots grow even longer....don't say I didn't warn you!!

I will have to go for a look for one of these big water bottles on recycling day. Apparently they are ideal for  brewing large amounts of wine. I use 1 gallon demi johns, but when I have a glut of fruit, a huge one would be ideal.

If you go to the place that bottles the water, they often have bottles that leak, so give them away.

I rang a oocal place and they said I could have as ,many as I wanted :D

Take care

We pick up pallets from here there and everywhere. At the moment I'm collecting shweppes tonic bottles to cover mine and Bunjy's sweetcorn. Its a good job I drink Dry white wine and tonic. We have planted that  much sweetcorn that I'm having to tip the stuff down me neck. pmsl

Bricks

Why do people throw away perfectly good bricks?

All my paths are from skipped bricks.

I recently recovered about 50 beautiful paviors.

Here's raising an old one, I snared another 6 bottles today, one 15L and five 20Ls, for you newbies I cut off the bottom and use for cloches and the bottom piece not to be wasted is sunken level with the soil filled with beer to catch the slugs. I was very lucky today, the idea of my tip was too get up early on Thursday to get the bottles, but this morning I was a bit late so was in a hurry, as I went past this house there were the bottles but where I normally hide them was off the cards, so I had to leave them, on the way home from work the recycle had all been collected except one house that had 6 lovely bottles outside, in the morning its dark so I just take them, so it was 2.20pm so I thought I would knock, the lady said they were next doors but she was out so I might as well take them, happy days, bish bosh, job done.   :P    ;D ;D ;D  ;)  :-*

I'm still finding the odd 20l bottle on recycle day.
But you know them people we love to hate who put their rubbish out the day before  >:( well I won't be slagging them off so much any more as on the way to the lottie I'm snaring some 5l bottles that still come in handy for cloches.    ;D ;D ;D

They come early and I don't want to get up early (as I am retired (retarded), so I put my rubbish, recycling out the night before, so there.  They came today, Monday, their usual day, but was a bit surprised as it was a bank holiday, and also the Council sweepers come after to sweep up the left overs, but missed some on the grass which I picked up. You can look through my bin any time.  ;D ;D
