Title: How exciting is growing seedlings !!
Post by: BarbaraGood on April 13, 2007, 18:56:46
I have planted a bit of all sorts, mostly as my 4 year old is extremely keen and as excited as I am!

WOW in just a few days we have 3-4" seedlings on most things  ;D I can't keep checking them !!

Does the novelty wear off  8)

I hope not, I've been growing things for 36 years now and still get as excited today to see seed leaved coming through  ;D

ooh good I am glad I won't feel my enthusiasm waning! DH is thrilled at the daily early morning reports as we have propagators along the bedroom windowsill and they are the first thing I check in the morning, even before the kids  ;D

Might have to try some more!!

My dear Gordon thinks I'm nuts  :D. I have to check the propagator and seed trays, water the plants in the GH if necessary - and oh yes, feed the fish in the pond.......all before I even think of getting showered or cooking his breakfast  ;D ;D ;D.

Nope - doesn't wear off - plus you keep noticing 'new' things (ie. things that probably always happen but you've missed them cos you were busy being excited by something else  ;D).  Noticed for the first time this evening, for example, that my little sweet pepper seedlings fold their leaves up together at night - really cute, and how can I have missed it before?  :)

Its a No for me as well!

And when you start to sow stuff that can take anything from thirty days to thirty months to germinate the thrill is even better when it does!

Oh good, so when the cranberry seeds come out of the fridge in three months  and finally get planted and then take more  months to germinate I will be doing somersaults XX Jeannine

Nope - never wears off and hope it never does.   Get's even more addictive when you grow something a little out of the ordinary. Never grown squash before and am waiting like an expectant mother for them just to pop up... (BTW Jeannine - two liquorice seedlings out of five popped up this week! ;D)

Planted on 2nd April in unheated greenhouse under half sized prop lid.  Had to work that out 'cos I was so excited when they arrived I forgot to journal it!

My Petit Gris de Rennes melons are up :), after just 4 days in a heated propagator.  And (almost) all the squashes, courgettes and cucumbers. The ones that haven't appeared yet are Marina di Chioggia, but they will soon (had a little poke in the compost, naughty   :-[  ;D me). I love chunky baby-plants like squashes and beans best. I was rather  dissapointed to see the celeriac seedlings; those must be the tiddliest things I've ever grown!

Never wears off...
Know what you mean about celeriac... just going off onto the dark side for a moment have you seen Nicotiana seedlings... how that becomes a 5' "Sylvistralis" never ceases to amaze me...

Thought it was just me and my OH that got all excited every year! She does seem to treat the seedlings as babies though - which is a touch disturbing!

It's also great that your successes and failures change from year to year....it never gets boring or predictable! ;D

Ups - nurturing an artichoke seedling, planting out, grows to six feet tall in first year and told not to harvest till next year.  Downs - next year arrives and plant get hit by frost and dies - hopes dashed  :(
Remember to back up! Two in reserve  ;)

I've got trays of seeds all over the place. For some reason, the ones in the kitchen aren't doing well at all. I moved the corn out when it started to keel over (it's now flourishing upstairs), but because of space I had to move squashes downstairs, and they're now keeling over. With this warm weather, they're going to the mini-greenhouses this weekend. Hopefully that'll solve it. Last year, corn flourished in the kitchen.

It is always a thrill! I always feel amazed that those tiny little dots can turn into something so brilliant! Squash are fantastic as they are so strong and make little volcanoes as they are moving the soil out of the way.  :D busy_lizzie

it is addictive !   its my favourite time of year - currently I've got some wild flowers popping through and it's a complete mystery as to what they are going to become.  It's also such a relief when seedlings finally appear, especially if they've been MIA for a while.

hahaha, MR that's exactly right!

It is so exciting, watching the little darlings push up towards the light.

But then, when every seed germinates, and you realise don't actually have room for 49 tomato plants, the slaughter begins. Thinning out. It's like Sophie's Choice.

How many of you feel sorry for the little darlings and give them a helping hand when they can't shed the seed pods?  ;D  Then pull off a leaf!   ::)

Been there, done that - just today with a cucumber seedling. The variety hasn't germinated well and I had to pull the seed leaves off with the seed pod on the only one to germinate, didn't I? And at £3.45 for 5 seeds - that's not funny  :'(.

I get excited when my cress germinates in the kitchen on a paper towel!  And as they break the soil, I welcome everyone - gotta treat them well, they will be our dinner in a couple of months time!

And yes ninny....my courgettes have been sticking this time.

How many of you get fed up waiting and poke around to see with the bigger seeds?  I do I do.

And I have dropped the odd seed when sowing and it falls to the greenhouse floor, then germinates, and I spend the rest of the summer treading over a lone cabbage or beetroot that is growing there!  Crazy.

Over sowing is the funniest bit for me. This year I sowed some 1988 squash seeds,Iwas going to chuck them out but thought I will have a go,I thought I may be lucky and get 1 that I can grow for seed so I sowed all I had, about 35 seeds, I got over 20 plants!!! This shook me rigid,19 years old and I got so many.Aint nature wonderful XX Jeannine

:D First thing I do is go into the greenhouses and say "Good morning boys and girls" and then I do a tour of the 'estate'.

Ahmed leaves his radio on for his seedlings!

I am so resisting doing that to my okra seedlings even as I type - they're there on the window sill looking all cramped and uncomfortable, and if I could just ping that seed pod off ...... :)

I'm new to this gardening lark and can't wait to get home to check on my seeds today.I used to think prince charles was a bit nutty talking to his plants but it seems to be quite natural.my wife thinks its a bit weird though.
i'm on a waiting list for my allotment ,been waiting a year now and have very itchy feet. problem with living in a town they are quite scarce.i watched the allotment show on sky at my borther's house on sunday and the boy from wales was saying that there were loads available in rhondda valley where his is but waiting lists up in highgate.
suppose i'll just have to be patient

I was so excited I phoned my husband at work - interrupted a meeting to tell him my news - he was not best pleased! Sometimes partners just don't understand! :D
