Title: New Member Hello!
Post by: zozobythesea on April 05, 2007, 11:17:19
Hi to all,

Not really a question, just a hello really.  I had a phone call yesterday to tell me that I have an allotment plot.  I have no idea what state it is in, but I'm so excited, can't wait to get started.  My children are eagar too.  Will keep you posted as to the state it is in, and how I am managing.  If anyone has any tips for a newbee, I would appreciate it.

Hello, and goodbye :D

Photos please! You'll want 'before' shots anyway to remind you how much you've achieved

Welcome Zozo,

You'll get loads of advice once you let people know what state the allotment's in and it's size etc. You'll probably be exposed to the long running "to rotorvate or not to rotorvate, that is the question" saga.

If the allotment is in a bit of a state, I suggest you clear a bit, plant it  and then clear another bit and plant that and so on.

Although I'm new to veggy growing, from what I've read (books and and A4A) I think that it's not too late in the year for planting nearl all vegetables. In fact for a lot of plants, although you can plant earlier in the warmer parts of the country (e.g. Cornwall), it often means you can (or even should)  plant a bit later as well.

Someone will join in and tell you if I'm wrong :)

Happy growing!

1/ stuff in skips
2/ cheap stuff in wilkies, netto, aldi, lidl etc
3/ people giving away stuff you can use

Hi Zozo - welcome and have fun on your new lottie.

You're lucky the children are onboard - do anything you can to keep then that way! Their own bit of plot/ Tallest sunflower-biggest pumpkin-longest runner bean competitions/ Get them to make the scarecrow - etc. etc.

My son ranks visits to our plot somewhere below trips to the dentists at the moment  ;D  Hoping I can coax him out of it this season, but it might be an early indicator of teenagehood  ::)

Hi

Thanks for all your advice.  Clear a bit plant a bit sounds like a good suggestion, keep the motivation going.

I am lucky with the children, but they are nearly 7 and 4 so there is plenty of time for them to become disinterested.  Making a scarecrow is a good idea, I might use that to fill up the Easter Holidays.

As soon as I have the details to my plot I'll let you know, you never know I may even be able to work out how to attach a photo.

Thanks again for the advice.  Glad to be a member, sounds like I have come to the right place.

Keep you informed.

Hi Zozo, you'll get loads of good advice on here, whatever you want to grow someone knows all about it! The only problem is finding room for all the wonderful plants and veggies you read about! We got our plot at christmas and are clearing a bit, planting a bit, works very well as you can enjoy your progress. We're in the south so have been planting for a few weeks now, but up to end of april is fine for most things, just be slightly shorter season.  8)

Hiya theothermarg,

I'm not sure what I shall be yet, although I am guessing that I am not going to be entirely by the book.  I shall keep you informed of my progress, and my style of planting once I discover this.  I guess a bit hit and miss to begin with.

Thanks for the hello!
