Post by: manicscousers on April 02, 2007, 18:31:27
I spent 15 minutes today watching 3 ladybirds eat all the greenfly off my sage cuttings, I was made up, me, who hates killing things, just sat there, thinking..get stuck in, less of the b*gers in the polytunnel   ;D

If you want to be really sadistic, the next time you see a ladybird, pick it up and put it on a rosebud that is covered in greenfly.
I agree it is a mesmerising experience.

Major infestation of greenfly on the roses but the ladybirds were all elsewhere

Not an aphid in sight on my roses up the arch, I had a potted seedling left over last year and didn't know what it was so just left it by the roses.  It grew into a small brussel sprout plant, the sprouts had blown by Feb as it was still in a small pot so I just left it there.  Over the the last couple of weeks it started to produce flower buds - guess where all the aphids are.....

i heard that the ladybird bleeds from its knees as a defence mechanism. the blood stinks, so the predator lets go. How true this is im not certain

I seem to have an infestation of ladybirds on my plot, I've never seen so many, I just hope we don't get a cold snap and they die off.

Last year there weren't meny because there was nothing for them to eat during the cold spring. I remember seeing a couple that were about half the normal size. There is the odd year when there are masses; there was an anormous number in 1976 (I think), and I remember great masses hatching out the following spring. Then they settled down again.

Lots of weeds and all the ground in between allotments is left to do as it pleases. Great for wildlife, not so great when the grass decides to seed!
