Title: Oinns garlic & straw

We've got our winter onions and garlic surrounded by straw.  One of the other allotmenteers noticed and said she thought that this might encourage rot and hinder ripening.

Any opinions?

I put grass cuttings all over mine, and I've never had any problem.
