Title: Gardening and Weather Rhyms and Sayings
Post by: nippie on March 23, 2007, 11:55:24
Tin Sheds idea, but I will start;

Weather the weather be hot
Or whether the weather be hot,
What ever the weather,
We will weather the weather
Whether we like it or not.

A good old playschool one that ;D

I have a Welsh one I can offer with a translation (might not be 100% correct as it's from my memories of childhood!)

Eira mawr , eira bach
Eira man, eira mawr.

Which means/translates as:
Big snow, little snow
fine snow, heavy snow.

the only one i know is

ne'er cast a clout (seed)
'till May is out.

i always thought it meant the month of may, but apparently it means the flowering white bush which, incidently, my dad refuses to allow in the house as he says it is bad luck.

Joyful nights bring sorrowful mornings.

The tomato's  a fruit so the experts say,
But most of us think it's the other way,
Whether fruit or veggie it's all the same,
The tomato's my favourite, regardless of name.

Heard this years ago ????

As I had suggested, in a previous thread about cuckoos, that all these sayings should be preserved - perhaps I had better provide some.

Oak before ash, we are in for a splash.
Ash before oak, we are in for a soak.

April showers bring May flowers.

If it rains on St Swithurn's Day, it will rain for 40 days.

We were also told as children never to pick blackberries after Michelmas as the the devil would have spat on them and made them sour!!!

There was a young fellow named Paul
Whose potatoes were blighted and small.
His silly mistake
Was his failure to take
The advice on Allotments 4 All.

Clout is an item of clothing or cloth so the saying means don't put your winter woolies away till the May blossom is out as you will still need it for cold spells.   Funnily enough my winter woollies weren't needed at all till February and again this last week but that apparently is to do with a saying about the weather at Candlemas.  If it's fine and sunny we have to expect another spell of sharp winter frosts and maybe snow before spring really gets going - http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/year/february.htm#weather .

:o ;D ;D I had long school knickers but I don't remember keeping toffees in them.
Well it is a beautifull day here and it has reminded me of another rhyme;
Spring has sprung,
the grass has rizz,
I wonder where the birdies izz.
"To be said in a Devonshire accent," I cant remember any more of it  :D

A bit of googling ...

Spring is sprung.
The grass is riz.
I wonder where the birdies is?
The bird is on the wing.
Now isn't that absurd?
I always thought the wing was on the bird!

Spring has sprung, the buds all break
Spring has sprung and nature wakes

Spring has sprung, winter's gone
Now we sing our happy song
Tra-la, la-la, la-la, lay
Sweep the old dead leaves away
