Title: Things we make in the winter months when we can't get on the lottie.
Post by: Jeannine on March 20, 2007, 22:45:35
Keeps me busy so I don't go stir crazy in the winter.

This is my Grandma's Cottage Quilt, hand appliqued, hand pieced and hand quilted . It went best in show a few years ago.

Is there anyone else out there who loves to quilt      XX Jeannine

What gorgeous quilts! Gosh - I wish I was clever with a needle and cotton - sewing on a button is about my limit  :-[ During the winter - (and all the other time I'm obliged to spend sitting about:( >:() I'm always crocheting or knitting. Anything from lacy doily-type-things to baby clothes/blankets.

<img src="http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8485/pansydoilymain1xy0.jpg" border="0" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us" /> (http://imageshack.us)

No good reason for doing it except that I don't like doing nothing - and I suppose it keeps me out of mischief  ;)

Both of those quilts are beautiful! :D I made a quilt last year for my daughter, it was my first attempt at quilting, photo below. I'm busy collecting scraps for the next project but it will be a long time before that is ready.

Grandma that is lovely :D, pansies are such cheery little flowers.

Super stuff, keep it coming,I am so glad I started this post. I have tons of patterns by the way. I  have recently started the Dear Jane Quilt , you will have to tap into the net to see it as I don't have a picture, all 4 inch blocks. I don't mind swapping fabric if anyone is interested.I love the pansy doily, I cannot crochet and really envy you that skill.
Leonnie for a first try your quilt is amazing, and look at what you are tackling for a second attempt, you are very brave. My first one was a complete disaster, it was a Star of Bethleham with half stars all around I paper pieced it with diamonds but made a mistake with the size,I did finish it but it is about ten feet square!! Quilting came to me very slowly, I was completely useless but determined, I had the patience but that was about it.

Lovely to see these.

Superb work ladies, i'm v envious at your skill!  I can knit, crochet and cross stitch but haven't tried quilting yet - it looks addictive, is it easy to start?  What sort of equipment do you need?

Keep up the good work all, & more pix please!

Tim, this is called a crazy quilt, very chic in the Victorian era, made of all sorts of bits and bobs including woolls, satins, cottons  etc then often embellished with ribbons or fancy embroidery over the seams, There is quite a following in reproducing this design. It is truly beautiful. I do so hope that you have it's history in the form of a label with the quilt. My love of quilting started when I was  child being wrapped in one quite similar which is alas no more. I can remember fondly feeling the fabrics and wondering how the little pieces went together. To this day I feel fabrics and know it came from the quilt I knew as  a child. It was 40 years later when I started to make one. You are very blessed to have this. XX Jeannine

Thanks for that, Jeannine - never knew the title.

No, no 'provenance', except for the day-to-day diary she kept through all those troubled times.  They were one of the few families to get through, twice, unscalped. I framed it for No1 Son in London.

Those were the days when they used to sweep up the gold dust from the Post Office floor to pay the rent!!

Message for Kitten.

Kitten if you start with something simple and follow a few basic rules it is not too difficult. 1/4 inch seams are a must or it doesn't go together.Buy good quality 100% cotton fabrics as they are easier to work with. Get a foot for your machine that has an accurate 1/4 inch marking on it. Start small, don't make the mistake I did.

There are many books on the market but a good one to get from the library if you can is called

The Quilters Ultimate Visual Guide.

It has almost everything you might want .

Invest in a good quilters ruler, a cutting mat and a rotary cutter.

Cutting with scissors is time consuming and not too accurate.

Look at      Creative Grids    www.creativegrids.com      it is a UK company that has most supplies other than fabric.

There are tons of sites with other stuff, I have such a big stash of stuff now but I buy quite alot from the US simply because there are no quilting shops in my area so mail order is a good choice, and frankly it is cheaper too.

If you just like to look at stuff go to  Keepsake Quilting at
www.keepsakequilting.com                    they will send you a free catalogue which is super. There are many in the UK too but I have dealt with this company for years.

If I can help you in any way  at all please contact me, I love to start someone off!!

I can send you some patterns to have a play with.

XX Jeannine

PS Is it addictive............................YES.

Tim you must put a history on the back of the frame, who made it ,when, and the wonderful stories you have told that go with it. Quilts such as this are very much sought after and they are apart of history. I was given an old quilt about 20 years ago that had been in a family for years, the old gentleman in my church  that gave it to me was an only child  of an only child,he  never married so there wa no-one to give his quilt too. I felt so honoured, I got all the info I could from him and embroidered a history label with the stories he told me.When I pop off whoever gets this quilt will know it's background well. Sometimes things get forgotten and details fade.

Wonderful stories, thank you so much for sharing them.

Kitten, I cannot sew I'm absolutely useless at it, but I managed quilting and actually really enjoy it. It's not that difficult and believe me if I can do it then anyone can. Like Jeannine says start with something simple, even a cushion cover to start with if you want to do something small and quick to finish to build your confidence. I was lucky to have a really patient friend on a forum who helped me a huge amount. The book she recommended to me and which I found really easy to learn from is The Singer Quilting Bible (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Quilting-Singer-Sewing-Reference-Library/dp/0865732000 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Quilting-Singer-Sewing-Reference-Library/dp/0865732000)). It is a really enjoyable pastime especially for the winter months when you want to be warm indoors and there's little to be doing at the allotment. :)

Jeannine, why was it called a Dear Jane quilt?
Title: Re: Things we make in the winter months when we can't get on the lottie.
Post by: Jeannine on March 21, 2007, 22:46:17
It was made by Jane A.Stikle in 1823.When it was displayed in a book it caught the eye of a modern quilter, she became entranced with it so her and a friend decided to recreate it. As she started work on the quilt she started a log and in this she wrote letters to the long gone Jane, she started her letters Dear Jane and the project took off.

With every block she made she wrote a letter, and kept this log till the end.

The letters are all published in the Dear Jane book with the patterns in.There is even an electric Dear Jane  which is software.

Gorgeous, gorgeous stuff everyone. Love the quilts and would love to make one. Spring now so maybe next winter. I might start collecting scraps now! Jeannine, I love the history behind the Dear Jane quilt. although I've had a little go at quilting when I was younger, that one looks a bit ambitious for a novice! might start with a sampler style one.
I make all sorts of stuff, much to the amazement of most of the playground mummies, so it's nice to see here that it is still valued and doesn't make you a weirdo!
I knit, all sorts of garments, bags and soft furnishings, floor cushions etc. I sew- clothes, curtains, bags, embroidered bags and clothes, beading. I also used to love batik, although you need a fair amount of space, which i don't have at the mo.
I also love to make dressing up clothes for my 2 little girls.
Ooh, used to make candles at one time too, although did actually get fed up with the fiddliness and mess!

I love this thread - what a talented lot you are.

Jeannine, I love the story of the Dear Jane quilt - my daughter is called Jane & I would love to make one for her but realise it is way beyond me, however by happy coincidence I bought one of Lidls bargain sewing machines last week & feel really inspired to make a few cushion covers.  Any advice on where to start would be appreciated - particularly where to get small amounts of interesting fabric from.

hi Marymary,  you can get offcuts of fabrics from any fabric shop or haberdashers that are often just the right size for cushions. Also, people seem to be giving away rolls of fabric on Freecycle. I find the further north you are the cheaper fabric is. I couldn't get much further south so praise be to northern rellies!
If you can get to Brum then go to the rag market and the little sari fabric shops, gorgeous, gorgeous!
So many fantastic soft furnishing books out there, I'd go to charity shop and pick one up. The styles may look outdated but the principle exactly the same!
Enjoy! x

I've been reading this thread, really enjoying it,so guess what...I've been inspired by Jeannine and Leonnie to have a go at quilting. I've wanted to try for ages but have thought it was way beyond me. Hey I'll give it a go!

Guess what part two...I've had an urge to take up knitting  lol!  I had the basics when I was little but am floundering now. Don't where to start, what needles etc. I've clean forgotten.I've been to car booties looking for knitting needles. I missed a box full by a whisker.

Lovely work everyone.  A real pleasure to be able to see it.   ;D

Heldi, you need about an 8mm for chunky yarns and knits and about an 4.5mm for your average knit. Bigger needles=bigger stitches (obviously  :P) It's hard to explain how to cast on and off verbally, it's easier if you're shown. you could probably find it on the net or pick up book from charity shop. This has added bonus of fab 80's jumpers to chortle at.
I love knitting. It's so relaxing and once you get as good as my marmie, you can read or watch telly at the same time! :o

Thank you.  The willow weaving was a one day course from 10am till 4pm and yes, that took one day.  There were 9 of us from the garden group and 2 friends and our instructor is Clare Wilks - http://www.clarewilks.co.uk/ who has worked with designers such as Bunny Guinness and has pieces on display in British gardens.  She was excellent and we all seemed to get the idea fairly quickly.  She taught us 3 weaves that day.  I've added two more photos to the album so you can see that we all came up with individual designs with just those 3.  The day cost us €60 and included hire of the hall and the willow and an endless supply of coffee and biscuits.

We are all very proud of our obelisks and I shall plant a clematis up mine but haven't yet decided which one.

The gilded stuff was done in an earlier course of lessons I took on paint effects.  It's a bit gaudy for me but I like the découpage and craquelure and the more subtle gilded pieces I've done.  The toy box was made from an IKEA box, some roller wheels and cut up wrapping paper pictures.   It all needs a clean, dust free environment to get a good finish so no feline help for these.

The cross-stitch is all counted, not original.  I'm not at all arty and can't draw for toffee but I am practical.

Just love the bird especially, so pleased the robin has the top billing, as my Dads mynah bird Charlie used to shout " Up the Robins " ( big Hull Kingston Rovers fan)

It is our family bird.

The pansies are also booootiful.

Lovely to see, XX Jeannine

Jeanine - do you hand stitch all the quilting or do it by machine in strips?  Some of the patterns are so beautiful.

Meet Gladys. She was miffed at being woken from hibernation and is not at her best. The photo does not do her heaving bosom and red silk knickers justice
She was the first, followed by Dolores, black, buxom and beautiful, wearing a leopardskin print thong under her fairy dress, She now resides in luxury in deepest Surrey. There are a few others around the country, each one ruder or more outrageous than the last ;). They have a wire through a hand so they can hang in the tree in an eyecatching position.
Glad is threatening me with strike action next Christmas if I don't put her back now. ::)

There are some lovely things on here  :)

I'd love to be able to crochet. I've studied 'The Ladybird Book of How To Crochet' (honestly! got it from a jumble sale! ) but still can't work it out  ::)

Mind you, my hands are too dirty from gardening these days to do anything like that  ;D

Such a great thread, Jeannine. Such wonderful works.

Mention of the Mynah made me look this up - the Common Mynah - poor little s..s!!

My latest humble offering is do you remember the days of pebble polishing? I still have all the 'gear'.

These were all from Fleswick Beach in Cumbria 20 years ago (naughty, now!!). A VERY long descent/climb - 200'? - especially when coming up with 20lb of pebbles!! Much was made into 'jewellry'.

You know Tim I am glad I started this thread too, we have seen some smashing stuff.

Oh the pebbles, we got so close to becoming rock hounds in Canada, but jus never did, there were some lovely stuff over there that you could pick up.we even went so far as to buy a cheap tumbler but never got around to it.

My son lives in a part of BC where they can get opals!!! Oh don't get me thinking.

I love stones, I have all kinds, I give them to kids as calming stones in school sometimes, they get warm when you hold themand the wee ones think they are magic. I still havr my Mums oiece of Amber in my handbag that she carried everywhere that she got as a bride.

Oh ,stones, I jsu dare not think!!!

I ablsoutely adore Gladys, she is priceless,we must see the others.

When I get chance I will put some of my dolls on too. but Gladys will win the prize !!!

I really love the pebbles Tim.  I have always been fascinated by them and can never visit a beach without bringing quite a lot back with me.  Polished they look stunning maybe I will look into it...

Tim, I don't think I have been to many places where I haven't come home without  a pocket full of pebbles or stones or bits of wood. Had not thought about tumbling them, I wish I had. They are so beautiful.
Last year I found a piece of wood that I'd been hanging on to for years  and made a mobile for the garden with it and some rams/sheep's horns found on a walk in the Dales. I thought it was OK 8) but BW thought it was bizarre ::) Ya can't please them all ;D

No1 Son is a great one for that sort of thing, Maggie.

What amazed me was the variety of stone in such a tiny beach. Read later that it was a glacial outflow.

Tim, those pebbles reminded me of my late Grandad. We used to go to his house in Leicester, listen to his Jungle Book record upstairs in his study (big privilege!) then go and polish stones. I only realised years later that it takes ages to tumble them and he must have good with the sleight of hand. Always looked like he put rough pebbles in and 10 minutes later got beautiful polished ones out. The rascal. And he made superb carrot cake.  ;)

I've recently started making home-made soap  :) Only the basic 'melt-and-pour' stuff, but it's good fun!

My teenage daughter came to visit this afternoon so I asked her if she wanted some soap. Yes ... but only Olbas Oil soap (she's addicted to the smell) and as long are there no 'bits' in it.

I made the soap in the kitchen whilst daughter used all the facilities in the house that cost me money (phone, internet, electricity etc)

I told her I'd made it and to go into the kitchen to see what she thought.

Daughter dutifully stood at the cooker and stirred the mixture gently in the pan with a slotted spoon ...

DAUGHTER: "Hmmmm ... liquid soap! How long will it take to set .... ARGGHHHH! THERE'S BITS IN IT! I HATE BITS IN SOAP!"

ME: "That's the bl**dy chip-pan you daft git! Soap's on the table over there"

I despair sometimes  ::)

brilliant, trixibelle, always saying I'm going to do that, I've just sent for shampoo base, deodorant stones and  I made an aloe vera face cream, never got around to soap, what scent do you put in, have you ever used your leftover bits of soap ?  ;D

Careful, Trixiebelle! Back in 1950-something I made soap. If my old school's still standing there will still be a big, black mark on the ceiling immediately above where my bunsen burner stood.   ::)

Hi Manics  ;D

I've got several soap bases (clear, organic, white, goat's milk, suspension mix etc)

I like to put things in like: Lavender flowers, chopped rosemary, apothecary rose petals, grated orange/lemon peel, oatmeal, pomegranite seeds, mixed spice, dessicated coconut etc.

For scent, if there's an appropriate essential oil (like rose/lavender or geranium) then I put that in as well. But the orange peel and mixed spice ones usually have enough scent to do without.

This is the company I've ordered the bases from. They're really helpful and quite competitive price-wise as well

http://thesoapkitchen.co.uk/

I've got shampoo, conditioner, lotion and ointment bases too  ;D Just about to make a range for my mate's birthday next week!

Trixie your soap was lovely,it lathered really well and smelled smashing. I did cut it in half and only used one half, I want to keep the other bit for the fragrance .

I felt dead posh last night, put on new Pjs and new slippers and lounged on the top of my bed with a book, then the cats came and sniffed me all over,Toby washed my feet while Maisie washed my eyelashes. I guess it tastes good too. I managed about 5 pages off the book then lost the mood, it is a bit hard with two cats invetigating every bit of you!!!

Oh and good news, it was gentle on my skin, I was bit nervous of that as my sknin can be silly sometimes.

Your soap was a big hit, thank you again XXX Jeannine

Glad you liked in Jeannine :) Oatmeal is very good for sensitive skin.

I am currently unleashing a batch of odd soap bar ingredients on the world ;D Made my mum some red lentil and orange last night, and today I am practising with dandelion flowers and flaked almonds! (Had to get rid of the dandelion flowers from the allotment SOMEHOW  ::) ) Flaked almonds were from the Co-Op ... not the lottie  ;D
