Post by: Grant on March 05, 2007, 08:46:36
Planted 10 tubers yesterday of Swift, in bags inside the greenhouse, lets see if they live up to their name.

Have you tried Lady Chrystl? They seem faster still. First picking last year on May 29th from a March 19th planting. Pushing my luck this year: planted a short row under fleece last Friday.

I noticed that some of my Swift tubers were sprouting last December, so I put them into a big box of compost into my cold greenhouse, in Glasgow. The shoots are about 50 cms high now, and I have them covered with some fleece, as it is very possible to get frost in the greenhouse. Swift is probably the best variety for this treatment, as the foliage is shorter than other varieties.

I planted some Swift in big pots in the greenhouse 2 weeks ago - no sign of them yet.  Grew them last year & got an early though not terribly abundant crop.  Tasty too.

These were the three potato varieties I grew last year, all in pots and bags.

Rocket were fastest, but mediocre flavour imo. Swift were better, and Lady C were fantastic. Growing lots of Lady C this year!
