White I would put in in your area twords the end of march.
Any earlier you might get a few go to seed.
Red at the end of April
the reason is if you put red sets in to early a lot will go straight to seed

Post by: saddad on February 16, 2007, 11:41:07: We started our 240 white sets (Turbo?) in cells in the greenhouse to get them rooting and shooting, we find the birds leave them alone so we don't spend weeks trying to get them back into their rows!

Post by: quizzical1 on February 17, 2007, 21:26:00: So, if I don't actually have an area prepared to plant the onion set (and shallots), can I put some of them in , say 2" pots of compost in the cold greenhouse to give them a start?

Reason for suggesting 2" is that I have about 6/8 of those trays that hold 40 of them (as on sale in in Aldi tomorrow), so could actually bring on most of them now if it's feasible. Failing that, I also have hundreds of those 3" black plastic pots. You know, the ones that tear easily. Would they be better?

BTW, I already have 40 garlics growing that way.
