Title: if i get a bug box will bad bugs move in?
Post by: legless on August 15, 2003, 22:03:20
.....or is it generally just friendlies such as lacewings and ladybirds that like them?

(i'm sure this is just another idea of mine that'll convince my 'traditional' allotment neighbours that i'm round the twist!) ;D

I think they're designed to mimic the normal hibernation sites for the relevant insects, so I wouldn't worry too much.

And I'd have fun winding up the old Regs - your plot is full of life in the air above it as well as in and on the soil.  Keep it up, encourage more and the likes of us will be in the majority! 8)

Hi Lynne and legless,I am in the process of creating a log pile with the idea that it will be used by Ladybirds, Hedgehogs and other such goodies !!
Everytime we go anywhere I come home with a log and add it to my pile !!  If it doesn't work at least I'll have plenty of fuel for the BBQ by next summer !!

Best wishes Ruth.

bug boxes and attractants are in place snuggled in the comfrey. saw a few mice down there tonight, the next door plot that was overgrown has been cleared literally over night and there was an unattended bonfire of all the weeds and potatoes so i think they might be refugees....

Have got hold of a couple of wooden orange boxes to be turned into winter hedgehog dens.  Will be placed in convenient gaps in the Rosa rugosa hedge.

When I get back from holiday will be contrusting a weather/bird feeding station and hopefully installing bug boxes.  There's even talk of a second pond!
