Title: What Plant could this be ?
Post by: Vony on January 01, 2007, 17:15:59

Can anybody identify these plants for me please. On our ramble yeaterday we noticed a bush of them growing wild. I'm sure they're probably quite common...  but neither hubby nor I know what they are... so I picked one off and brought it home to photograph it.   Pity I didn't have the camera on me and I could have photographed the bush!

Sorry the picture isn't very sharp.

Almost certain they are the berries of Symphoricarpus albus. aka Snowberry aka Pheasant berry. Not native and a suckering thug. I had a go at sharpening the picture for you too.

Snowberry. It's a medium-sized bush with small rounded leaves and big white berries. It's been used a lot as a hedging plant round the site, and it spreads everywhere. Doesn't make a very good hedge either.

Worse than ground elder in my opinion!  We inherited it with our garden and are still struggling to get rif of it some 7 years on!  It has even worked it's way into our neighbours garden.....and their neighbour!

I had a straggly little self-sown bit by the stream when I took on my plot. It developed into a great clump, and is now at the centre of a large area of black plastic. That should sort it!

Oh no it won't. I have been clearing an area that was covered in mypex membrane and the roots of all the invasive plants have grown and grown until they reach the edge. They are not lying under the membrane but in the soil itself. They are now a hard matting of roots that will not dig up without breaking and every small bit is a potential plant. The same thing will be happening under your plastic.

We'll see. Fortunately it's rather constricted by some mysterious brick foundations, so I'm hopeful.

I got some in a hedge and only got rid of it by taking out the hedge as well, and reset...

The bluebells are vigerous but they won't outgrow the hedge!
