Anyone noticed if any spuds or onions etc are in yet?
Ive heard people say that B&Q and some Garden Centres have theirs in

T&M delivered my spuds before christmas wilkies are usually 2nd week in january

Never order mine as they cost twice as much than if ya buy from a local outlet 3kg of Picasso from Marshalls £6.45 plus p&p £1.25=£7.70. :( In local farm shop £3.00. :)

I think a bloke on our site is organising deliveries this year at 'about' £2/3kg ... I have no idea how he manages it !

My fav. GC at Breedon Hill Leics has a very good range at about £3-50 per 3 kg net but I doubt they are in yet.

I used to get mine cheap from a local pet shop but he has sold up and the new owner is no longer doing spuds. I cant find anywhere very local ie in town, hence the thread (wilkos is 12 miles away in a dircetion I dont often travel). I refuse to pay more for a bag of seed than what I can buy a sack for from the side of the road

January Gardener's World have an offer for spuds - £15 for three packs of twenty tubers - reasonable range of types. Extra bags £2.50 each. They are from Thompson & Morgan & promise delivery in mid Feb.

Garden allotment shop for me around about £2.50 for 3Kg. To expensive from seed catalogues, plus the fact that I like to see the quality of the seed potato I am buying.

local allotment shop for us, as well, 60p per lb, last year, choice of 4 earlies, 2nds and 6 mains, roll on mid january :)

The only trouble with the allotment shop is you don't allways get what ya order :'( end up with a variety called substitute. ;D

Luckily a local garden centre sells potatoes by the pound so it is possible to buy fewer tubers of many different varieties than a lot of one variety. There are usually about thirty different varieties to select from. I usually buy them during February but they will soon be available.

omg - I've still got potatoes coming out of my ears and can't bear to think about buying any for chitting just yet. The cellar head has two blue trays of Pentland Javelin that look like auditionees for some wierd alien film and have nicely fused themselves together.

I've just been to B&Q in Watford, who have half a dozen varieties of potato. £3.48 for a good sized bag (1.5kg?) or 2 for a fiver. No onions yet, though. Bit early, I'd have thought.

I'm not a fan of Wilkos at all. They may be cheaper than other places, but you do not always get what you pay for.
Froglets mentions a variety called 'substitute', I would say they also sell varieties, called 'surprise, surprise' and 'nothing like the label'!!
One item that springs to mind are the begonia corms, white with a pink frilly edging. What I got was bright orange. Buggeredup my colour scheme for the containers that year.
I did get some good young plants from B&Q last year, but some of the fuchsia varieties were wrong
You pays your money and you takes your choice. If you want named varieties of plants then you go to a specialist nursery. On the other hand if you want a bright colourful display for summer, B&Q, Wilkos, etc will provide the goods.

after hearing that they had spuds and onions in stock i drove to our closest branch in Leek. They hadnt put them out yet and were selling cheap xmas trees!
to make it worse the wife bought everything else in the shop

I absolutely love Wilkies. Some folks on here think that I have shares in the place. I do understand about the begonias though cos it happened to me. I got orange and red instead of pink cascading ones. Although they were really beautiful they were bought to go into a uniform colour basket so didn't produce the effect I wanted. I told them when I went back into the store and they gave me my money back. I got to keep the other begonias as well. They will always refund your money if you are not satisfied with what you buy. Everything else I've had from there has been fine.

fibre pots, 1.99 for 48 large ones
5 lily of the valley plants for 1.00
also got razor blades, bin bags, sweetex pills but they haven't put their potatoes out yet either
will go back next week ;D

We must be very lucky around here , our local Lottie Society list 38 different vars. of potatoes at ££2.40/£2.50 per 3 kgs. They are certified seed pots.

i paid 3.49 for 2.5kg of rocket potatoes and international kidneys where the same price for 2 kg
so i stuck to rocket

our store has them all in. I got:
- 3kg of rocket for 2.99
- 250g of pink fir (10 seed potatoes for 1.90)
- charlotte (10 seed potatoes for 1.50)
- 250g of Red Carmen onions for 1.00
- 500g of Sturton onion for 1.00
- 500g Red Sun Shallots for 1.00

Wilkos are definetly the allotment holders best friend but Poundland come in a close second

Interesting - my begonias did exactly the same. Would've complained, but.. wasn't really worth it. Annoying as I wouldn't have bought them if I'd known. :/

My local garden centre have 3kg bags for 3.00. I bought Pink Fir Apple there.
Last year I got 1.5kg bag for 50p at B&Q in March. They had Pentland Javelin, Charlotte, Maris Peer, Foremost etc.

I went in to Wilko's yesterday to check out what they've got and they have a huge gardening dept! I was so excited, I'm going back in on Monday and will be buying plenty of stuff to get us going on our lottie! Shame I've got to get the train home (boo!) but never mind! x

Hi Kev. I don't mind being a groupie of Wilkies. Theres not much else going at my age. the thing is , we can get there in 10 minutes, park undercover and walk to the store what ever the weather. Not only that, it's the first store we come to when leaving the car park. It's a laugh really. We go do our other shopping and when we get back to Wilkies Tony suggests he takes the bags up to the car while I look around Wilkies. Believe me I'm like bat out of hell round those isles before he gets back. He always knows where to find me. I just love Wilkies.

yep pots, onions, rhubarb, asparagus and even elephant garlic at my wilkos yesterday. I spent another tenner after already spending thirty at downtown!

Still nothing in at our local Wilkos yesterday but came across a G/Centre selling spuds at £2.75 for 3/2.5Kg depending on type approx 34 tubers in each. So bought an early a second and a main.
Onions sets were £1.19 for 50 buy 2 get third free so got three of them.
So with the seed onons in and the overwintered onions gowing well Im about done now - except for some red onion sets as they had sold out of these .... wil still have to go to wilkos
my missus thinks Ive got too many onions but as I remind her if I grow 365 its only 1 a day if they all grow ;)

No wilkinsons here Shirlton sorry can't bump up your shares. When I visit the outlaws sorry the inlaws in the N. East I visit their Wilkos big ol shop that one.

Paid a visit yesterday afternoon and took advantage of their "buy one, get one free" seed offer. Eight packets of seeds for the price of four, isn't bad! They had lots of onion/shallot sets in, but the condition of them was very poor as they were all very soft, so although I was tempted by the red onion ones, I resisted. Might look in the other Wilko's store we have in Newcastle. They had lots of gardening stuff in but the staff were still filling shelves, so I will be paying more visits soon to see what else I can get there. :D busy_lizzie

My local Wilkos has never stocked seed potatoes ??? They have onions, shallots, garlic and tons of seeds but no potatoes...going to ask them why when I next go.

bought Maris peer and Nicola seed pots so far, awaiting the fruit trees.
all the plants etc I've bought from there have grown with great success /shades x

So glad that there is someone else like me. I just cannot resist going in there, Sometimes I just look and am able to resist the temptation. Other time I go bloomin mad. There fruit was a bit expensive I thought 1.99 for a raspberry was a bit much. I ordered mine from Tand M. Have yet to get them though.

Popped in for soem BOGOF seeds yesterday and picked up 6 Huge plastic tubs for veg growing in the yard. Best of all, they were BOGOF too. Big enough to grow potatos in, £3.99. Sadly the little wheely trollies were not on offer, but only £2.99. Still, good value & needed to keep the yard useable all summer.
