Title: manure
Post by: sunbeam on December 04, 2006, 21:42:50
Hi

I have a new allotment and am just beginning on what seems a steep, though enjoyable learning curve, I have built some raised beds, I would like to put down some manure over the winter and then perhaps get some quality topsoil in the spring ready for planting.

The manure I’m told may not be well rotted, is this OK? Also am I then limited to what I can then put in the beds? Thanks in advance

Hi Sunbeam, putting manure on your raised beds is fine even if it may not be fully rotted down as you have a few months before you start planting and sowing the majority of crops, the group of crops though that will not like the manure is ROOT crops such as Carrots, Parsnips, etc as their roots will fork and be distorted, I have recently covered this subject on my allotments website, link below, regards Steve.

I've heard that you shouldn't grow root crops where the ground has been freshly manured many, many times but I've never had a problem doing so, strange ???
