Post by: MrsKP on September 25, 2006, 16:18:10

Any idea what these might be ?  Mum gave me a couple last week and thought they were called Bananarama but I can't seem to find any online to confirm.  All I can see by that name is a sweet pepper.

Cheers muchly tomato experts.

Didn't see them on the vine, but the innerds looked just like that !  Mine were paler than those coming up on google and weren't particularly sweet, rather bland, but then they've been sitting on the side for a week !  Unless anyone has got any better ideas, I'll call them cream sausage.

Thanks SS and MT and your super speedy service.

basically the same - the criteria being that they are open pollinated, i.e. not hybrids, they have to be old (although there is some debate on the exact age, some say pre WWII, other say older) and they represent a class of tomatoes that have amazing flavours as well as wonderful colours and shapes

sounds like some of us  ;D

I seriously doubt that mine are OIE then.  Although I don't know where Mum got them from, I would imagine they were from Asda rather than a specialist supplier ! ;D

Would be interesting however to see/taste and OIE next to a CS.  Their descriptions and photos are very similar.

It's all an education isn't it ?  Thanks for the quick tutorial.

I actually thought that cream sausage was also a heritage variety and even rarer because of few seeds around - but maybe I am mistaking this for a newer variety of a similar name  :-\

it appears to be a rare, recent introduction, possibly of US origin. Of couse, it could be an old one that's only appeared on the market recently.

The only real requirement for an Heritage/heirloom tomato is that it is not commercially available.. in EU that means no longer on the national lists... although with Toms many companies get round this by including a trial form for you to return or by giving them away on a three for two like Sub Arctic Plenty from T+M this season just starting...

I have a book with over 400 toms in it... but it is in French...
could be a pale Bannan legs from the shape, both Ivory Egg and Pink Potlandgo through a white stage... which may account for the lack of taste..
There are a lot of Synonyms about, the same tom having several names.
I assume your giant Pineapple is Ananas (French for Pineapple) Supersprout. Great Tom but very slow in the UK...

and remember, they'd been packed in an ice-cream tub, flown from london to glasgow after hanging around an airport for a day, and left on the side for a few days.  probably not the best way to keep them in tip top condition.

I grew banana legs this year and they ddn't look like that. They are a deeper yellow and straighter sided, almost cylindrical.

I don't think it will be either of the varieties - cream sausage or old ivory egg - if it has little taste, plus the fact that it is much yellower than imagined (although over ripe white toms can get yellowish though) - probably one of the modern yellow varieties and not worth selling on 'flog it'  :)

Well the label will read 'Kaypee's Mystery Sausage' then and we'll see what comes up!
You might have a winner yet kaypee 8) ::) ;D

I was going to say "back to square one then".

I'll give Mum a ring in a mo and investigate further.  Amazing what a difference a flash makes to the colour eh (they definitely have got darker in the last 24 hours though).
