Title: What to plant in my new greenhouse?
Post by: Biscombe on August 29, 2006, 08:22:25
HI all,
My greenhouse birthday and Crimbo present from my OH went up yesterday, I'm very excited!!!! I'm very new to greenhouse growing so sorry for this novice question.

In my part of Spain the winters get quite cold here are the temperatures:
Dec  max 16c min -5c
Jan Max 15c Min -4c
Feb Max 18c Min -3c
March Max 26c Min -2c
April Max 28c Min 2c
May Max 36c Min 3c

I'm thinking about sowing some tomatoes do I have to choose certain varieties? Also I've got some peppers growing in pots, after they finish fruiting shall I prune them then set them out in spring?

Any other ideas about what I plant in my new green house

i'm putting a couple of troughs of niche oriental for a while, and i've sown a few late pots of Autumn kings, got a pot of spring onions and some cuttings on the go.

of course, i've got a while yet before i can pull the parsnips (only crop left from when i built the g/h over the beds !

aubergines have still to move out though.  they're looking brilliant as well, if only it was this time last month.

Unless you can afford to heat it a little to keep the temp above 5C then those are none starters but many salads will grow in unheated greenhouses even as far North as Derby (UK Midlands)... I have a salad leaf mix that will grow right through until May if I don't have to clear it. The only real problem is ventilation to avoid rots..

Personally I wouldn't... maybe try a couple just to see how they cope.... I'd just exploit that earlier season start.... and later finish...

in the UK in the north (Leeds) everything seems to be not worth growing unheated as they are so slow. I have tried salad mixtures and Lambs Lettuce.
Any advice?

Claytonia... (Miners Lettuce) and a couple of heritage lettuce eg Stoke and Bronze arrow.. they do well outside in not so sunny Derby...
