Hello all,
I havent been on here in a while - been busy on the plot. reeping in my harvest.
I have a space where the potatoes and onions were, any suggestions on what I can plant there?

Its not too late for leeks if you can get some baby plants, also lettuce and carrots.

I will be sowing overwintering spinach - Giant winter, over my first early spud site. Plus onions and garlic.

If you can get seedlings, there's plenty of time to plant out leek and brassica like keefy say.
Overwintering onion seed goes in this week. Garlic will go in in November. I sowed Beetroot, Cylindra and Burpees Golden Globe, Chinese Cabbage Michihili, Choy Sum, Purple Flowering, Komatsuna (Mustard Spinach), Lettuce Winter Density and Rouge d'Hiver, Endive, Spinaches Bordeaux and Riccio d’Asti, Broccoli Raab, and Gai Lan in modules today. No reason why they shouldn't be sown direct outdoors if you have space ;D ;D ;D

I've just come in from planting out some beetroot and Winter Radish that I started in cells two weeks ago, over my first earlies bed. Loads of chinese leaves as SS says and Chichory, sugar loaf also ready for planting out...

sorry to be so newbie , but which of the above can be planted from seed now in an area of the allotment?. And do they need to be covered?
Or do u need to start them off and then transfer them to the allotment later. Would love to grow something this year whatever it is , as long as it's edible

Hi baggie, my list can be sown either in modules or direct on the allotment. All are small seed, so should be sown like carrot - a very thin covering of soil or compost just to keep them moist. I sow in modules cos I have run out of space on the plot, but hope to have the spuds and beans cleared in three weeks or so ::) If you have space, and your soil is nice and moist, outdoors should be fine for late summer sowings :) just try not to sow Oriental brassica in an area where you have grown brassica the previous season, or where you know you have club root >:(
