How cute!

I was tidying a friends garden the other day and found a tiny mouse on the lawn. It had its eyes closed so guess it was a baby. It was so cute I wanted to keep it! Don't worry I put it back into the bushes.  :)

Aw cute. I had mice in in my shed,we took some photos and my son made up a little story book about them. He took it to school and got a headmasters award. Which I think was just a sticker with "headmaster's award" written on it. We were pleased as punch and we like our mousies!

That's definitely Mus musculus, the house mouse. I get wood mice, which are more athletic, and climb a good deal, and field voles; the other day I found two voles sitting in the top of one of my daleks.

I get field voles.  Some 'pests' are just totally tolerable due to 'aaaaah' factor.

I thought they are wood (long-tailed field) mousies. I had a googling session and came across this pest-control site's page about woodmice http://www.the-piedpiper.co.uk/th1g.htm and a picture from national geographic: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/kids/2003/11/woodmiceroadsigns.html

It is, but house mice are a sort of greyish brown, which appears to vary with the lighting. Compare this one: http://www.west-ext.com/house_mouse.html . You can enlarge the pic. The only other mouse you might find is the wood mouse, which is a yellowish-brown, has bigger ears and back feet, and jumps. http://ladywildlife.com/animal/woodmouse.html .

The latter would be "The yellow necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) is similar in appearance to the wood mouse, but it is larger, weighing up to 45g, and has a distinctive collar of yellow fur " compared with Apodemus sylvaticus, the woodmouse/fieldmouse/long tailed field mouse.

I'm not at all sure I have flavicollis on my plot; they look like ordiary wood mice to me, and I've seen them many times. It may just be the local stock, but they're all had a yellowish tinge, which is why I m,entioned it.

I hope you didn't 'exterminate' them  ;)
