Title: Any Advice Please
Post by: Moriwaki on July 26, 2006, 19:35:26
I believe its the hot weather has caused this as we have now had the chickens more than two years without any problem.
We seem to have mites (possibly red mites) in the chicken run / cage I have asked around and been told to dust with Derris dust this I have done with little effect any other advice welcomed.

Regards M

Hi Sanders

I have looked at your link (thanx) It seems they all regard roof felt as the biggest draw to mites.  My run is purpose built and for what its worth I think I wil rip the felt off and put wooden shingles on instead.
It may even look pretty ;D

Cheers M

I fear shingles may be almost as bad, lots of nooks and crannies to hide in. I use Onduline, lasts years and is very good:

Not my picture but it shows the material very well.

Last very well and is easy to work with. You can get it in most DIY sheds.

look on the pekinbantam.com website - A1 Chicken Crazy has put an old fashioned method up on the poultry health section for redmite... includes creosote (proper stuff) and other concoctions.
