Title: Cucumbers not setting
Post by: Simon05 on July 06, 2006, 15:38:38
My cucumbers get to an inch long then they start turning yellow at the end and die, is it poor pollination? If so can you hand pollinate them as you do melons?

Are they m/f or all-female? In or out? How big?

all female ones, in a greenhouse, the plant is roughly 4 foot tall, fruit is about inch or so

Simon - I am NOT pleased.
Been quite smug - no, grateful - the last few weeks, with only a dozen or so, on 8 10' plants, aborting.
Went out on the offchance that  might find one to compare with yours & was much disappointed to find this. Focus? Sorry - not going out there again tonight!

Think?
1. All female? No need to pollinate?
2. I get this every year, just as I think that all is great. Sometimes on overgrown lower sideshoots but, more usually, well up the plant when it is overstressed with babies.

I await an expert answer??

Tim,

many thanks for your reply, its one of them things that happens. Perhaps there isnt an expert answer, in the books and on the net, it says that as the season progresses this doesnt happen.

It is good to know we are not alone  :)
I have been acusing OH of not watering enough.
I did cut one lovely cucumber last night, good size and it tasted delicious, you can certainly tell the difference from shop ones.

A sudden thought. Tying in that shoot tonight, I found another 4 aborts. That's 7 in a row.

Now this is the plant that gets the full sun when the shading's not up, & the one that wilts most. So those embryos could have suffered at the time of the worst heat??

The plant on the north side, a different variety, is not suffering. Yet!

Tim,

from looking at the pics, yes they are going like that, but I removed the ones that had turned yellow, all the other immature  cues are ok
