Has anyone any experience growing Plum lemon tomatoes? My plant has trusses the like of which I have never seen; the lowest truss has 137 fruit/flowers/buds. The truss branches off into new trusses, then descends towards the ground comes right round the plant and branches again into truss after truss, it is still continuing this process. At current levels, and if all the flowers/buds set we'd be talking a truss of 137 tomatoes, roughly 20kg. From one truss!
The plant has two trusses higher up the stem, that appear to be doing the same, is this a freak plant, or is this normal for this variety?
Should I pinch out the tops now at just three trusses, on account of their huge size?

I've had the same on some plants from one of my varieties of tomatoes, but can't remember which variety, however it's not a plum lemon as I'm not growing those. I've pinched the trusses back to the first set of flowers and only got about one or two further trusses before i pinched so don't know if I would've ended up with over 100 tomatoes :o
Not sure if I did the right thing or not... ??? but I doub't one plant could have the energy to ripen all those tomatoes ?

are they a variety called I.D.I ? yellow plum ,generally became available this year,,if so 100s of toms. and can be picked right up to november,also keep for ages if left on vine,

I know them simply as Plum Lemon, this one (clicky) (http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/88546/index.html), realseeds sell them, but I can't recall where I actually got my seeds, I think it was a swap.

This is all their site says about this tom:

This bright yellow Russian tomato is shaped exactly like a lemon, right down to the point on the bottom!
Fruits are about 3 inches long and , needless to say, lemon yellow.
Nice to add colour in salads, but also a plum type that is really good for sauces - how about some yellow ketchup?

a yellow plum tomato , which we saved the seed and this is
just 1 truss

Yeah that is what my trusses look like, amazing stuff.
Did the fruit look like lemons with a little point at the end? If not this is a different mega yielding variety.

My only concern is that my plum lemon are far biger tomatoes than the Ildi, can the plant really cope with several hundred 4oz fruits?

100+ on many types - but not of that size!!

Extraordinary! Amazing! If I grew just one of those I could do away with the other 17 tom plants I've got. SO envious.

Grew Ildi last year, very ordinary flavour wise sadly

I have grown Ildi for the past few years. I find them sweet, but without a real "tomatoey" flavour.
However, the reasons why I grow are:
1) Huge, impressive trusses
2) Sweet flavour....good for mixed colour tomato salads
3) Extension of season....the trusses can be removed from the plant at the end of the season and will happily ripen, on the truss, without rotting, on a warm windowsill. i.e. they don't drop, rot, or refuse to ripen. You can have ripe Ildi, when all other tomatoes have given up the ghost!!!!
I will admit, they are not the best for flavour....but by far from the worst! Better than the water-bags sold in the supermarket!

Fascinating, thank you for all the info and pictures, I have made a note in my diary to try these next year along with Cornue des Andes, which were mentioned in another of Amphibian's posts!

If you really think it will collapse under the weight cut off a third or two thirds of each truss and make some green tomato chutney, or even yellow if they ripen off the plant!

Just to stick my two penneth in, here is a piccy of one of the trusses on my Reisentraube cherry toms. No where near as many as yours, but still a good size, and big fruits already!

My Ildi are sulking this year, and have barely flowered. I can't believe how many flowers you have per truss! Fantastic!
If you manage to save any seed, could you pass some on to me, please?
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for some sunshine to help them ripen....can't wait to see pictures of a fully ripened truss :o! :-*

Mine have got loads of flowers - no signs of any friuit yet though. They dont like this weather though, the whole plant is bright yellow. I think Greyhounds are fairing better then mine.

I grew Ildi last year and am growing them again this year - they were brilliant. Admittedly not the tastiest but for the sheer pleasure of being able to scoff little bites of happiness fresh from the greenhouse I could not resist !
I made them into passata, fried them, put them in stews, froze them, dried them and of course used them raw. This little tom would not be a winner in any of the categories but is very versitile and amazing to look at.
I am also growing lemon plum again, mine does have a lot of flower buds on each truss but nowhere near as many as Ildi. Growing them again as they are pretty but not very tasty - yellow tomato sauce is interesting though.
If I get a chance I will take a picture of my plants later.

I agree with many others WOW!
And this is especially good news as I am growing Ildi this year with some seeds I got from a swap. No flowers yet, but it is a little later here, so I am not worried. I had to grow them on the lottie as I don't yet have a greenhouse, and I can honestly say I'd be glad with a fraction of that yield!!
