Title: Steam Cleaning
Post by: Doris_Pinks on March 23, 2004, 10:59:45
Was helping a friend, who is a decorator, yesterday, strip wallpaper using a steamer, she mentioned that on the instructions it could be used to sterilise seed trays, pots and soil! What a good idea I thought ;D Anyone else done this? Thought it might be worth borrowing ;)  DP

Me lazy moo....me let the weather do the cleaning for me, or a good bang (ahem) before reusing.  Never had a problem yet, but of course the day will come.  :-\

You`re quite right EJ. Eventually the day will come, and then your seedlings will all `damp off`

As to steam cleaning, it`s an excellent method of sterilising pots and boxes and I sometimes use it, but it doesn`t always shift the dried on dirt, and some of the cheaper plastic trays can suddenly go soft and wrinkle if they get too hot.

I know Hugh, I know......when I lived at home I once had the bright idea of using mums dishwasher to clean all my pots.  As you can imagine, it got blocked up, the pipes got blocked up, I got told off, mum got cross, dad had to get the wrench out, so on and so on.

From now on I will clean them all thoroughly, but isn't it just the most boring job ever! :-\

I use a small round headed scrubbing brush and a bucket of soapy water with a splash of dettol. The job usually gets done late summer so sitting in the sun with a bucket and beer isn't such a chore.

I think kenkew has the best way.

Any job you can do in the sun with a beer is always best.

Cheers  :D
