wasnt sure where to put this but had to tell...
i have lived in this house for ten years and my husband has lived in this house for fifteen years. his grandparents lived here for fifty years. there is a big cherry tree in the garden and every year i wait for the cherries to ripen and every year the birds get there first and i curse them and they always get the cherries before me!!! .......or so i thought.
today i was told by a visiting family member ...that they are white cherries and they are now ripe. and the tree is heaving with them. :P ??? ::) :o
all these years i have been cursing those darned birds for getting the fruit before it ripens up and it was ripe all along. arggghhhh.
o well you live and learn. i have eaten half a tonne of them today and they are the yummiest sweetest cherries ever. just had to share that all with you. you can carry on watching the footy now. ;)

Your cherries are far more interesting! I would duck, but all those watching footie will be too involved to throw anything! I didn't know that white cherries existed!
;)
-
presumably like you the birds waited and waited before one twigged and then they scoffed the lot!
;D
-
lol ........ all those wasted years. bet your birds are well miffed that their previously unraided supply will be limited from now on.
I quite fancy growing a cherry tree. will have to look into it in more detail.
;D

LOL me neither - you're not alone sarah! And what a bonus that they're good to eat! ;D

Laughing so much that you'd not realized til now ;D ;D ;D
-

i've no idea david.r - i could spit some pits your way if you like (dont know how you propogate cherries). the tree is about thirty feet high though. mind you it is pretty old.

Found this
http://www.pfaf.org/database/plants.php?Schizomeria+ovata
but the cherry doesn't look white white ???
-
on that link they don't look like anything to me, SS ;)
They're a light cream white but spect that up in an old high tree with leaves'n'that around they'd look like....well, like cherry-coloured cherries before they turned red?

Mine are pale yellow when ripe, with just a slightest hint of pinkness. I scoffed ours today! You can leave them longer and they will pink up more, but then you have no chance against the birds. Yum!
-
yes thats just what they are like. they do go quite pinky if you leave them, but at the point of perfection they are a sort of blush. maddeningly there are oodles and oodles up the top of the tree and theres no way i can get up there. never mind plenty at step ladder level for me.

He he, thats a classic! :D
