Title: Surface covering plants
Post by: Garden Manager on May 10, 2006, 10:59:20
Other than lillies can anyone sugest a good plant for a small pond which will cover the surface of the water (that isnt a weed!)  I am finding I have too much water surface exposed in my new pond and an loosing water to evaporation in the warm weather.

Attractive flowers/foliage and hardiness would be a bonus.

Can anyone make any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance

I bought some water fringe(Nymphoides peltata ) 2 years ago.Last year it did very well and has the bonus of small flowers. It is a bit lily like in appearance but the leaves are much smaller. The plant starts growing early on in the season and rapidly covers the surface of the pond,so  although it is similar to a small water lily it does  not have to be potted up the same way as a lily and does not have the usual crown that needs to be out of the soil.It can be planted at a depth between 1 and 2 ft.

Already this year it is growing rapidly and looking very healthy,so i am very glad i bought it.

www.watergardeningdirect.com and go to the deep water marginals in the pond plants section, under the shopping section.
