Hi there,
I didn't realize that 'Early purple sprouting broccoli' mean that 'early'?
These were I grow them last year, and I have just picked some yesterday!!

purple sprouting brocc is a winter vegetable. i thought early meant ;march' though - i checked and mine are an early variety as well, but only really started production in april :)
tasty stuff, isnt it?

Well done, Yuet - and you can now harvest the various types over most of the year.
As good as asparagus.

I think early is a bit late this year!! I'v had to plant my spuds around
them the few that grow for something allyear round on my site seem to have given up on theirs . My husband (not a gardener but he's trying ::)
gets annoyed because ours looks untidy with bits hanging round but he dos'nt mind eating it

Yuet - you are right - it can be grown that way - given the correct variety.

i grow the summer green broccoli (calabrese) that way.
but i will be later with my PSB this year - wont plant it until june or so ready for next spring again :)

Mine was ravaged by pigeons and I almost gave up on it, glad I didn't as since I netted it (allbeit too late) it has been showing good progress, I think May might be a better month to harvest. :-\ ;D

Hello!I'm a new bug here, with a new allotment. I planted purple sprouting from seed about 2 weeks ago. Am now getting the feeling that that was an incredibly stupid thing to do?
any advice appreciated. ???

No I don't think so, anyway you have done it now so let it grow.
Here's a little something I copied from somewhere ::) Broccoli Purple Sprouting sow March/May harvest Mar/April pick young sprouts regularly. As with all vegetables avoid low lying areas which may become water-logged. This is especially important for broccoli varieties which will stay in the ground over winter. Do not plant broccoli on a site which has been used for brassicas (cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, turnip, kohlrabi) in the last two years because this will increase the chances of getting club root and cabbage root fly. ;)

But green is, to my mind, a more 'late summer' dish.

i think purple sprouting and broccoli are the most confusing of all the veg!!!!!
but i think i have cracked it so me poor simple mind can grasp it-i know there'll be some people rolling their eyes out there,but bear with me...i know its not rocket salad....... ;))
so...
yes,there are a lot of varieties of both but if you sow psb seeds now.(and succession sow like clanger said..and grow the plants on and say,plant them where you take the early spuds out in june/july then expect your crop a year later.....grow green calabrese(which greengrocers and a lot of ordinary bods call broccoli now for planting out in about a month for harvesting in august/ september....

phew-i had to sit and really think about this the other day when i was posting that my psb was not coming to anything-now however-a week later-i can see the start of the shoots-i spose its a bit like last year-i was all out of kilter and planted stuff quite late-but i got respectrable crops...just a bit later than most peoples!

I've just planted out some summer purple sprouting broccoli (wok broc), the packet says tender stems all summer, sow in succession March to June and harvest June - December.
The slugs are having a feast tho ::) I'm sowing some more today for planting out next month.

I've sown my purple broc and they are up about 5 cms high at the mo. I'm really looking forward to these next year as they cost the earth in the supermarket £1.99 not enough for 3 people.

Can I asked after this crops. Do I have to lift them up or shall I leaving them in for next year ??? Will I still get any ;D ;D
