Title: Do all Potatoes go in at the same time?
Post by: Flowertot on March 30, 2006, 08:49:15
Hi All

I'm new to this.  Could anyone tell me if I plant all my Potatoes at the same time or do I stagger 1st, 2nd and main crops?

Thanks

Flowerpot the answer to your question I am afraid is yes and no, early pots usually go in first follwed by seconds then lates, but it does not matter if they are all planted at the same time of year, if this is done the early potatoes will still be ready weeks, maybe months before the lates.  Also you can still plant late potatoes well into the month of June and still get a good crop of them.

What if you plant them all at once and don't harvest some of the earlies (or seconds) till the end of the year? What happens then? Will they just grow bigger or will they start to degrade?

They will grow bigger but they will not cook as well, often falling to pieces when boiled , and they can also generate a second skin making cooking harder as well.

They also do not store so well as seconds or main crops.

I didn't harvest my Duke of Yorks till late last year as I was too ill to cope with digging them up. They were fine. But I wouldn't promise that earlies will always be like that.
