Title: chillis - am I too late?
Post by: aquilegia on March 21, 2006, 17:00:40
Is it too late to sow chillis?

I sowed some in january - but they didn't happen. I wasn't too fussed as I had some plants left from last year. But now I've lost those plants too.

hi acqui, as my mum got older and more forgetful she often didn't plant til late. I still remember one Christmas she had thriving chillis in pots that were still fruiting cos she hadn't sown until April, and that was in Northumberland!

Weird packet that, it claims to be cayenne, but the image shows upright chillies, as does the article in the mag, yet cayennes grow downward.

I treat chillies the same as tomatoes, so based upon that - ok!

not too late, i have always sown in late march and have had great success, even with outdoor grown plants.

This weekend I shall be sowing about 100 aji seeds sent to me from Bolivia. I intend to have several kilos of chillis by the end of the year to make aji paste with.

Post by: flowerlady on March 22, 2006, 12:00:29
erm ....  what's aji paste  ???
Title: Re: chillis - am I too late?
Post by: David R on March 22, 2006, 12:34:40
flowerlady, aji paste is a concoction made by my lovely missus with aji chillis (deseeded), a splash of oil and little else. what she does is blend the aji, chuck them in a pot, add the oil and boil them up. The resultant paste is used like passatta or tomato paste as the basis for meat sauces etc.
The paste is used instead of tomatoes and provides a nice alternative.

Hope this makes sense. D

Last year our chillies were complete pains.  Sowed them in March and they took forever to germinate and we only managed to get a few chillies off the odd plant.

I hear tell that chillies need a good level of heat to germinate effectively, so I'm going to put mine over the radiator (no airing cupboard) this year & see what happens.

Hope the Aji's work out ok.

i sowed some last sunday, and they were up by this sunday just passed. plenty of time. i also did the tomatos and aubergines at the same time, any earlier than this wont really bring me advantages on the plot as i have to wait for longer to plant them out then.

i didnt do thigns any earlier last year (looking into the 2005 sowing thread) and everything was just perfect. so no rush :)

Hi
First time grower here too.  I planted mine a month ago and nothing happened so I popped them and  some more freshly sown seed into my (borrowed) heated propagator and within a week i have dozens :o of plants......... Not sure what to do with them all now if i can keep 'em all going.

So I hope it's not too late to get a decent crop.  i read elsewhere they are slow to do anything, once you can get them to germinate.

Well, out of all of mine, only a few are up!  GGRR.  Same with aubergines.  They are always so slow for me, so will sow more more more on Friday - my official seed sowing and gardening day!  ;D

I'm very late sowing my chillies but, having no heated propagator, I rely on a south facing window sill in an unheated conservatory.  I've not sown yet because it's been too d**n cold. With temps varying between -4 and +3.5 degrees C recently I'm still not rushing to sow.  They'll catch up in the end.

I sowed my chillis into a heated propagator on Sunday afternoon. The first one germinated this morning (well, overnight I guess.) I presume I should treat them the same as a tomato? At what stage can they go into my cold greenhouse? Are they best grown in pots or has anyone grown them i the ground?
Title: Re: chillis - am I too late?

i think they like warm feet.
they will take forever if just left on the side somewhere, or simply plonked in the greenhouse.
i have a shelf above a radiator which i use to 'propagate' - once they are up, i move to somewhere cooler and light to slow things down a bit
the aubs were more reluctant but i have got more that the few plants i needed, in any case.

i am planning to plant out mid to late may - depending on the weather situation. i did them mid may last year. it's quite a sheltered and sunny spot i have.

i might also plant some out much sooner than that - i have a wallowater to test drive 8) that would allow me to plant out in mid april if i recall correctly.

It`s not too late-even my `green finger` has turned a nasty shade of brown this season so far. Some seedlings have perked up a bit while I have been away but a major -re-sow of some is on the cards tomorrow

Chilies are surprisingly hardcore, or so I have discovered recently. While I was potting on my chilies, I accidentally snapped one of the seedlings from its rootball, I discarded it onto my potting table and it must have got mixed up with the compost which was subsequently pored back into the bag. Two weeks later, while potting some more seeds, I discovered the seedling in the bag of compost, it has re-rooted in the dark. I decided to plant it next to my front door, for the hell of it, and it is still there, growing away in a rather cold March.

I presume it is a Rocoto, which are massively more hardy than the other varieties.

Took between 3 and 4 weeks for mine to come up, so I wouldn't worry yet. Going great guns now.

I agree, amphibian. Chillies are really tough! I had a similar accident and my hungarian hot wax seedling was snapped completely. I saved the top bit and put it back in pot (just because I couldn't bring myself to throw it away) and it rooted about a week later and doing really well now!  ;DGood job it survived because it was the only plant I got from my Hungarian Hot Wax seeds.

I bought seeds of 10 chilli varieties and waiting for delivery. Hope it's not too late to sow from now.

I snapped my only Boldog Hot Spice plant today, I am hoping it will re-root.

BTW I sowed my seeds in early may last year, I got pods I just brought them inside for ripening.
