Title: Your A4All 'Name'
Post by: Garden Manager on March 08, 2006, 11:03:36
Looking through the forums i have been looking at some of the names you use on A4All. Some are straightforward (eg based on your own name), some are cryptic, and some are just plain bizare.

Would any of you care to tell us why you chose the name you want to be known by on the forum? I am not asking you to reveal your real name if you wish to remain 'anon', but some idea of 'where you are coming from' would perhaps allow ups to get to know you a bit better (and satisfy curiosity ;D).

I'll start with my own 'Garden Cadet'. OK I am a gardener so that explains the 'garden' bit. The 'Cadet' part comes from the fact i  do not consider myself a truly experienced gardener, and am still learning, so I am in gardening terms a 'Cadet'. I hope this makes sense.

Looking forward to replies.

Mine's easy - my gardening website is moonbells.

It should have been moonrose (combining my astronomy and gardening hobbies) but someone beat me to the .com domain, so I went for bells instead as I liked the sound of it!

I am moonrose just about everywhere else, however! Decided to stick with moonbells for this login so it matched the gardening site.

supersprout was my first online alias for eBay, and it seemed appropriate for this site. I sprout a lot of seeds all year round for home consumption, and they are super. That's it! NB the alias is nothing to do with Brussels Sprouts :P

Mine is just a tag for an old hotmail address I had years ago based upon part of my name and a randon 2 numbers.

Post by: euronerd on March 08, 2006, 13:02:52
For what it's worth, I used euronerd originally on an American (computer-related) forum, partly to identify me with 'rightpondia' and partly to add a touch of humour - lost on the Americans. Through nothing but laziness, I thought I might as well see if it worked on here (and ditto Flickr). For no good reason, I dislike such names as 'geoff72298165'.

Geoff - real name.

I imagine this may fall into the weird category.

7 is my lucky number and crops up a lot in my life - three 7's are very lucky but I am not superstitious.

When I was younger I used to play in a lot of rock bands and have hair past my waist (not too mentioned back combed and dyed! I'm also 6'2") when I started work at my current place of employment someone said he looks like Gloria Estefan and it stuck. It go shortened to Glo and then a w got added (don't know why)

so glow777  - obvious eh?

Real name Ian!

I noticed that many members had taken the names of plants, nothing unusual in that. A friend suggested various names, and I liked Curry because ...

Post by: Heldi on March 08, 2006, 13:43:28
I rarely get called by my true name...I get "H"  "Helly"  "Hels"  and the lads at work used to call me Heldi ,and because my Dad used to use that nickname after hearing someone shout it out, I chose that one.  I guess I could have spelled it different..Heldee or Heldy but I didn't.

I called myself busy_lizzie because I like them.  They are  cute little border plants, nice and colourful and I usually have them in my flower beds every year, and also because when you are a gardener in the growing season, you are always busy doing one thing or the other, trying to keep ahead of Mother Nature.  :) busy_lizzie

This is a really interesting thread ;D.
I'm PAKABA, because our surname begins with an A, and i'm Paula,(PA) dh is Keith(KA) and my eldest son is Ben(BA), i used it for the first time when he was just born.

so I guess now instead of signing off Pakaba i can sign off Paula. :)

Heh, good thread

I'm 'Bellebouche' because that's the name of our little hamlet where we're first time gardeners and learning running a small allotment (or French 'potager') by jumping in at the deep end. Last year was only really half a year but we "did rather well" http://www.bellebouche.com/2005cultivation.html (http://www.bellebouche.com/2005cultivation.html) (thanks to some pointers from the A4A forum!)

What a fun thread!  When I first joined a message board I wanted to remain anonymous so I decided to fashion my name on one of my favourite football players and called myself Erica Cantona.  But I forgot my password and had to register with a different name so I went for Georgie, after Georgie Best, my girlhood hero.  Yup, true red.   ;)

Great thread!! Have always been curious about peoples choice of name!!
Katy is a nickname I used to have because Caroline is too long and no one ever used it, but that's my real one. The "newbie" part was so that people would realise that I knew very little when I first joined the site last June, that has not changed!!

It is funny how you form opinions of people based on the name they chose - you are busy shattering some of these!

Mine I use on various things and is the name of the computer in the Discworld books.  Just to show how bad at names I am, both my son and my dog are named after pratchet characters.  My Dad (Palustris) guessed who it was from the user name.

Weedin Project - what we called our garden when we moved into our new house; kind of like the Eden Project (especially as we put two biomes greenhouses up!) but not quite the same scale or diversity.

Still weedin', still a project.

And before anyone asks if we grow the same things as Eden Project, no, we don't have a hemp section!

Real names - Stewart (Weedin) & Cathy (Mrs Project).

hey - less of the abuse ...

... Duck Dinner Dash is a kinda pun as my surname is Duck, but I'm a vegetarian (which amuses my friends no end) and I like to do things at full speed !  ... warped humour I guess, but it works for me ... I think its funny and it kinda fits with the allotment providing dinner theme too.

I also adore making cakes and baking in general, so if I ever get my olde tea shoppe it will be christened with the same name.  Did think about DCUK, but have been beaten to it - there's an old shop in Whitby, which used to be 'DUCKs' (no relation) and is now something else, but the U & C have been swapped round ... cool  8)

Just going to add a little more to the reason why I like snails. They are interesting creatures. I like the way they carry there homes on there backs. Also it is very interesting to see how they behave. They do some good for the enviroment also in the manor of providing foor for toads and birds. Ok they are a pest when they eat your plants but you can protect your plants. I have to admit also that I use slug pallets  :o in the greenhouse because 1 slug or snail can cause a disaster on a seed tray full of seedlings. But other than that my garden and slugs and snails live together in harmony.

Cool topic :D  Have sometimes wondered about some of the weirder names, but hadn't the gumption to ask!  :P

Mine probably falls slightly into the "weird" class.  It's been observed by some of my family and friends that I share many of the characteristics of Tolkien's hobbits, apart from smoking pipeweed and the slight inconvenience of being over 6ft. Hence the mutant bit.  Me, I think I'm more like Tom Bombadil actually, hoping to bump into Goldberry!  :-[  Ah well, I'm sure other people know me best! ::)

What an interesting thread.

My name comes from my favourite band called the grifters.  they had an album called' full blown possession' and i used to have an email address called full blown grifter.  however, people got the wrong idea behind its meaning so i shortened it to fbgrifter.

I like the name because i've noticed that people assume i'm a bloke...but my real name is natalie!

I was given my name by the Vicar's wife!!  I used to do huge floral displays for her in church  ;D

I would often be in the vicarage for coffee with my 'garden buddy' and whenever anyone called I would get introduced as "this is ..........  the flowerlady"!!

My name was chosen by simply looking at the label of the plant next to me when I was using the computer - the Carob tree, Ceratonia siliqua aka locust bean, St. Johns Bread and many other things.

Somebody earlier in the thread asked if snails have hearts and the answer is yes. They have brains, too!

Great Grandma Blanche Bennett married into the family bringing 4 unmarried sisters and a strain of depressive insanity with her.  One of the Mad Bennett Aunts had to have her entire leg amputated - we don't know why - and she had it embalmed and a long casket made for it.  It lived in the house and was brought out on high days and holy days for inspection ("showing off") to the family guests.  It nearly wasn't buried with her but someone remembered at the last minute.

Hence Bennettsleg.  My mother's ashamed of me... ;D ;D ;D

Adrian

I really enjoyed looking through your blog, super! :D

Heh, glad you enjoyed it.. this growing year we'll be doing a lot more web page writing as over the winter we've used the downtime from not gardening/doing renovations to actually get the website a bit better organised.

The potager is so much a way of life around here and the whole relationship with food (erm, and wine!) was one of our motivators for moving out to France - a year into it and we've had  huge fun growing and producing much of our own food.

All the news that's fit to print is in http://www.bellebouche.com/blog  (http://www.bellebouche.com/blog)now and the most recent exciting development is I've decided to put in an asparagus bed and bought 30 crowns for it! The frost looks to be behind us now so that'll get dug in the next few days.
 :)

What can I say?

Can't dig, can't plant...... lucky I've got a great OH who does all the hard work!(he wrote that...)
I do the "vision" part and define the "concept" (think channel five decorating programmes)

But with any luck we'll have some onions and spuds by december!

We got our half plot at the end of jan and have dug one and a half beds by now (2 kids under 2 are as helpful as you can imagine)......... ten minutes after finishing the first bed and congratulating ourselves our local critic arrived to tell us how we had done it all wrong!

From what I see the A4A advice is a little more positive than that!

Happy chitting

I can't beat bennettsleg (late catching up on my Internet schtick, so way behind everyone else in the conversation, sorry). However, my username on a different forum was Snad. Grandpa-in-law used to refer to his nose as a snad-bix (he had a habit of deliberately mispronouncing words - he meant snot-box, apologies to those of a squeamish disposition). Since my hooter is rather a faceful, I adopted Snad as my username of choice. Got sick of explaining it to people, though, so decided to go all literary this time around... 8)

Not read through all this so don't know whether it is still on thread or not but clanger was a school/fellow sibling nick.  Red came about because there are one or two other clangers out there in web world, but for why 'red'  take your pick - football club or if you are American, my politics (I have been banned from an American chat room based purely on my views (and I though McCarthy was dead) on Bush and the war)*.  Redimp elsewhere links it defintely to football as I support the redimps.  This was also the name used on the American site as clanger made it too long.

My alias has nothing to do with gardening - Philip Pullman (he of dark materials fame) wrote a series of books for children about a victorian teenager called sally lockhart.

"Sally is sixteen when the story begins, orphaned and alone. She's had an unconventional education: her knowledge of English Literature, French, History, Art and Music is non-existent, but she has a thorough grounding in military tactics, can run a business, ride like a Cossack and shoot straight with a pistol."

http://www.philip-pullman.com/pages/content/index.asp?PageID=28

She also has an illegitimate child after she sleeps with the hero of the first book who then promptly dies in a fire but she refuses to give the child up and lives in social disgrace for the rest of the series (combining solving mysteries with childcare of course).  Was always a bit of feminist at heart so liked the character   ;D

Anybody from that end of the country who played in the same league in the 70's. not a very interesting
