Just noticed in TV Times that there is a Gardener's World special on allotments on this coming Friday 3 March. Starts at 8pm.

I went to watch this, and woke up 3/4 hr later - big oops!
Any ideas anyone whether this sort of thing is repeated anywhere?

Thanks for that Sprout....I've highlighted it in the t.v. times (which I always do for anything I want to record)....marked it on my kitchen calendar and written myself a big note....which at the moment is being moved around but has to stay somewhere in my vision!!....
what's the betting - somehow I'll miss it ::)

Did anyone watch the GW Fruit growing special last Friday? I thought it was superb - really inspiring. Lovely to see a bit more of Perch Hill, and Sarah Raven's presentation was excellent as always. No dumbing down here!

We just watched the fruit special tonight and really enjoyed it. Makes you want to grow much more fruit. Glad to hear there is another special programme on Friday, and double bonus that it is about allotments. :) busy_lizzie

i wonder if Dan can start a TV forum so we can all jot down when something's scheduled for or when the repeat is or what we actually think of the programme.
i don't get to do much tv these days, so often forget when there's something good on. it was only Dan reminding us last week that I watched Bill Oddie and his patch and that would have been a real shame to have missed it.
think i'll copy this to the website tips forum ::)

A really good program and it also made me wan't to grow fruit after she got rid of the fear they're harder to grow than vegetables. I even went out and bought BRITISH apples!

Are you sure it's a repeat? I didn't notice the tell-tale 'R' in my TV Times. I agree with you that the one shown last year wasn't all that good and I'll be disappointed if this is a repeat of that! :'(

Yes we are only joshing Katy! It is good to be eccentric in my eyes, makes the world a more colourful place. I think people must laugh when they see me in my straw hat in the summer, to say it has seen better days is an understatement. ;D busy_lizzie

Well at least we know Sarah Raven is a real person, just think it could be Tommy with his braces or that chap with the silly sleeves and fancy shirts, you know, the ones you would not be seen in. ;)

I enjoyed the GW programme on fruit as well, especially as I've planted some fruit bushes. Though I did feel some mild annoyance at the fact her business was benefitting from the GW programme, re: the fresh fruit she's planning on selling. Seems like all the GW specials she presents, benefits her business ("Sarah Raven's Cutting Garden") etc, at Perch Hill in some way... ;) Not to mention the free advertising and product placements...
I know the lines between celebrities, their TV work and their businesses are blurring, but it's not something I'd expect from the BBC with license payers providing their budget... but I'm just a tad naive I guess ;D
As for her clothes, with the prices she charges... 'nuff said! ::)

If you've can get it, UKTVStyle gardens are showing re-runs of Gardener's World at the moment- and they even seem to be matched to the time of year!

Oh no!! I am disappointed. :( Looked in the Radio Times tonight and it is a repeat. It seems to be the one with Monty and his visit to the Birmingham allotments which was screened some time ago. It will be nice to see it again, but pity it isn't something new about allotments. It always amazes me why there aren't more programmes about allotments and veggie growing when you look at how fashionable it is to have one at the moment. busy_lizzie

I thought the new controller of the BBC was going to put a stop to all of these repeats on BBC, must say he is not doing a very good job about it at the moment. Roll on the light nights so I can get down the lottie, and not watch all this s**t on the box.

Gutted if it is a repeat. On the other hand (no pun intended as I'm about to leave for the local hospital to have my pinkie cauterised) am a bit chuffed as I've never started a thread that's gone onto 2 pages before! Whoo-hoo! :D (I know, I know, I need to get out more!)

If it is the Brum one, I've seen it twice before already. Our youngest asked who the 'bag lady' was, doing the gardening last week! I'm not sure any of the other GW presenters have quite the same approach to marketing themselves that Sarah does, or have I just missed it? Lance

Just been to look at the BBC website and it says it is a repeat from 15 August 2003. I will watch it though as my memory isn't as good as it was ;) It's a real shame they can't film a new programme though.

as i missed it the first and second times, i'm looking forward to it.
but i have to say this is typical of the Beeb, i'm not their greatest fan and look forward to the day that i'm strong enough to chuck the tv (and their licence fee) straight out the window.

It was nice to see the gate of my plot on the Guinea Gardens, if nothing more; it was filmed during the thefts, and of course they didn't tell me it was happening.

I wondered whilst i was watcing if anyone here has a plot on any of the sites features.

So am going to repeat myself. But i really enjoyed the program I hadn't seen it before.. It would have been good to see an average alllotment (if one exists) or a family plot. My 6 year old son watched it with me and he was fascinated by the lady dying her clothes.
Can't wait to get back to the plot,

I must be one of the few who missed it first time around. as mentioned, very little in the way of helful hints apart from that lady's demon Gooseberry and Gunness punch. Oh and the bit about earthing up carrots. My wife left the room to play cards on the computer....she thinks I'm a bit barmy, but you all know that we're all the only really sane people on this planet ;D

Awwww....lovely prog. My allotment is on a tiny 16 plot site in a village.... Don't think anyone knows about the no hose pipe thing. I'm sure I'm the only person that uses a can and that's mainly cause I'm SO far from the tap that a hose pipe would have to be stupidly long to use at all! Made me want to go and dig, but ground like perma frost and clay so no can do....will play with my leek seedlings instead. ;D

What a great program, enjoyed it first time round and this time round aswell! Monty is clearly at his best around vegetables and allotments!!!

I saw it for the first time and really enjoyed it. Made me inspired to get out and dig, but rather depressed at how far we've got to go to reach the standards there- roll on retirement! Shame the ground's covered in snow today!It was good to see a young couple winning the show, but a pity we hadn't seen their allotment (unless I missed it!)

It was very noticeable on my site that they only filmed on the most weed-free and cosmetic plots. That's a pity because it doesn't give a terue picture of the site. We have a few people who manage to do a brilliant job of cultivating their whole plot, but double-size plots with hedges are a massive amount of work, and a lot of people only cultivate part. A programme dealing with methods of coping with all that work would be a lot more valuable; there are loads of ways to manage it, but it takes several years to pick them up, and by that time a lot of people will have given up.

Have passed the Guinea Gardens myself on the train every week, and had often wondered why they looked so different from the rest of the Allotment sites in Birmingham. Now I know why! ;D
I'm easily pleased I know, but I agree that most people with allotments or growing veg could do with a series on the BBC, similar to ITV's series "The Allotment". I haven't been able to borrow it, but I've read on other posts there were loads of hints and tips.
Don't know if anybody else has watched it, but I've borrowed a 2 DVD set of "The Victorian Kitchen Garden" which was shown on the Beeb nearly 20 years ago which is fascinating stuff, especially listening to the old ex-Head Gardener, Harry Dobson! ;D

I have the book from"The Victorian Kitchen Garden" and watched every one of the programmes!! My favourite moment was Harry explaining something about peaches, he said "..when the leaves are about the size of a mouses ear.." as if everyone would know how big that was!! It was full of lovely shots of the huge glasshouse and lots of info about fruit and veg which was great.
Can you tell? I was a HUGE fan!!!

well that's blown my image of a lottie being a wee community ! ever since taking up this lovely hobby last year, i've been safe in my bubble thinking this was a very pleasant thing to do and very positive.
it's quite depressing to know that even in my world of idyllic escape, there are people that would do badly by others.
is no-where safe ?

They're normally OK. The problem with any small community, whether it's a community association, allotment site, church, what it is, that's run by volunteers is that if you're not careful it can be taken over by bullying nutters who just want power. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, and sometimes people get carelss.

I think a year on the plot, more of a gardening programme with tips and growers secrets, is more of the series I watch, rather than a documentry like airport...etc.

victorian kitchen garden book - I have had this from the library for the last 6 months; it is out of print and I have finally got a copy off EBay; which arrived last week; fantastic book; which inspired me to grw Chinese Artichookes this year, as he gives a good tip on harvesting them to keep them white. If anyone is near Newbury; the library book will be returned next week!!!

Well I no longer have TV so don't have to suffer the annoying frequency of repeats anymore.
I just couldn't stand the rubbish they show any longer. Okay so there are exceptions but overall TV just ain't worth the price you pay anymore IMHO.

Yes it definately was a repeat, I started to watch it and thought boring...seen it before. They don't always tell you now in the listings whether its a repeat, I've been conned a few times that way.

Well the programme seems to have done some good @ our allotment site and inspired at least 5 new tenants to take up plots ;D
They all seem really enthusiastic (and let's face it ... if they're staying in on a Friday night to watch Gardener's World instead of going to the pub then they're half way there ;D )
I've just bought the Victorian Kitchen Garden DVD on recommendation from you guys/gals as well, so that's what I'll be doing for the next few Friday nights.
Who would have thought that I was a 'Club/Pub Diva' 10 yrs ago ... running my own pub and club and REJOICING in the fact that everyone on the pub scene recognised me! Now I'm happy enough in the fact that everyone on our allotment site knows me and we have no 'gate/door policy' ;D
And Robert: I 'vaguely' know the circumstances surrounding which you recently posted about the characters that appeared on the Gardener's World Special .. but to be frank, I think your postings were a little harsh.
Even Emily on Coronation Street forgave the bloke that murdered her husband Ernest during an armed robbery, despite a 'rocky' moment in her faith of God!!!!!!
'Vitriol' will always rear its head in the wonderful world of allotments when such a mixture of people from different backgrounds come together to work the land. But I think we've got enough 'vitriol' between us all to direct it at slugs, snails, carrot-fly and greenfly for a better outcome ;)

I have just read this thread and i am shocked and appalled at remarks made by Robert Brenchly and you being a man of God shocks me even more. We all have to meet our maker someday and he alone will decide.

About the programme great stuff i saw it the first time around glad you all enjoyed it, cannot wait until we can get going again. I love to see things popping through the earth this time of year it heralds a new beginning, WONDERFUL.

have been reading up on green manure ... now all I have to do is to work out where to shoe-horn it into the plan :o
certainly fancy growing Phacelia ... has anyone got any seed I could try? ;D

Haven't got any seeds left from what I grew last year but i can certainly recommend it. OK, I left it in too long and let it flower but was glad I did 'cos the bees absolutely loved it - never seen so many of them.

can anyone remember a programme in erm...the 80's i think-called again,i think'dig' i seem to recall it was an above average gardening programme -a lot of it was along the lines of allotmenteering-sadly there were only about half a dozen programmes and then no more.
i find most of the gardeners world programmes a little too 'monied' for me..so much cash expended-i mean-its nice todream.......
