Title: Word to JPG conversion
Post by: Derekthefox on December 29, 2005, 13:35:22
I have been asked by a friend to advise on methods of creating a postable image (eg JPG) from a Word document. Whilst I know that there are shareware programs etc out there, does anyone know of any reliable and free methods. Eg is this facility available within MS Office?

Not sure about Office, but on Lotus you can import an image and then Export it as a Jpeg, Should imagine Word is the same.

Don't know if I'm being a bit blind here, but in 'Documents', WORD offers 'move this file' - 'choose destination' - 'my pictures' - 'move'. Does that mean anything??

How big is the word document? If all the info fits on screen you could do a screen dump (Ctrl+Shift+PrintScreen), then open an image programme e.g. Photoshop and paste, then save as a jpg file. Would only work if all the info needed can be viewed onscreen all at once, i.e. no scrolling down, if you have to scroll down then you could do numerous screen dumps and post as numerous jpg files. :-\

Or zoom out a little, however when zooming back in you may lose some quality.  depends.

The word document is a development of a text file, basically it is an assembly of items, text, images, other applications, eg spreadsheets. When it is printed, it is purely an image on paper, which could be scanned and then sent as a JPG. So I am looking to output this without the hassle of printing, or even perhaps generating the printer file.

I can't find those commands in my MS WORD Tim, which came with Office XP Pro ...

The screen dump is one way I have thought of Jesseveve, but it is not very eloquent because of the limited image size. Ctrl Alt Prt scrn does not appear to work on my machine either ...

Adam, yes it is like an image of the complete document.

... once you've pasted it, you can then use the 'crop' tools from the 'picture toolbar ' (right click and you should get the option) to get rid of the bits you don't need.  Can then resise (use 'drag handles') to make a little bigger if need be.

ooh, have you thought of converting it to an Adobe Acrobat file ?  These are very easy / small to send over internet etc (if thats what you are planning to do), but you'll need the full acrobat programme vs the 'reader' thats more commonly available.  Alternatively you could 'zip' it.

Yes; the other two you mention are already compressed. PDF would definitely be the best way of transmitting this sort of document - Word's picture storage isn't that good. You can create five for free at Adobe:

This is the result of taking an A4 size Word page, maximised to the screen, with the screen set to Full Screen and pasted into photoeditor, using an A4 paper size. By playing with the margin (not needed for posting) and altering the dimensions, the stretched screen could be reduced.

Comments?

When all else fails I use a freeware program called ImageForge, which you can download from link below. Enables you to crop screenprint to take out toolbars etc & just be left with image. Can then save in range of formats to good quality. Much better than Paint since can easily adjust what you want to see, & saved image much better quality. Also much more flexible in getting things like Excel graphs in right format to upload to web site.

Might be joining this thread too late but if you go the pdf route - which will be useful for other documents as well, you can download PDF995 which is a free pdf creator. After creating a pdf it just takes you to a single advert which you can just cancel - there are no adverts on the pdf like with other shareware.
Obviously you then get all the benefits of the pdf eg, copy/search text reduced file size password protection etc etc etc
