Title: Other interests?
Post by: Jesse on December 26, 2005, 22:42:51
We all share an interest in gardening and allotmenteering but I wonder what other interests or hobbies people have? What do you do when you're not at work or at the allotment? :)

Motorcycling, folk music, morris dancing, sea fishing, scientific research into the effects of over-indulging with alcoholic beverages.

Still testing, (excuse the pun)

Will have to substitute garden for allotment.  Other interests? Keeping in touch with my far flung family by wonderful email and pics. Also avid reader, love biographies and  books on Royalty. In the winter months I like to do my decorating, have been rather lazy this year (old age creeping/galloping on) but intend starting early in the new year. Oh yes and I do love listening to my type of music, Anyone for Bette Midler, Barry White. Judy Garland, Rosemarie?????

Lorna I like Barry White as well :)

Joji, I've always wanted to ride in a sleigh pulled by huskies, sounds wonderful, where do you live, I assume not in the UK?

Gardengirl, what kind of dolls do you make?

If anyone has photos of their creations that they'd like to share I'd love to see them in the gallery or even post them in here. It's fascinating to hear what other interests people have, some are quite unexpected and unusual. :)

Really interesting hobbies.  Driving huskies sounds exhilirating and I love the soft toys and always really admire anyone who is crafty.  I quite enjoy knitting and crochet and was just thinking over the holidays I would like to get back doing it.  I am a left hander and it was always agony trying to learn anything like that when I was at school so I was never very confident.

I practice Tai Chi and I am interested in complimentary therapies.  I trained as a Reflexologist over 12 years ago and praticed until about four years ago.  I have also dabbled in Reiki, Crystal Healing and Homeopathy, the things that have really helped my health over the years.  I love music and have a very eclectric taste in it.  You will always hear something going at our house.  I took a singing course at the beginning of the year too which was brilliant and I would like to do more of that in 2006. I am really interested in technology and have a thirst  for learning more. I was a member of our local allotment committee last year and may go back to it next year, though it is quite thankless work.  My allotment and my garden are my main interests, mainly because you can't be half hearted about growing things, and it is the thing that brings me peace and contentment and a feeling of well being more than anything else that I do.  :) busy_lizzie

I didn't think I had interests until I stopped and thought to myself.   I am involved in the Church in the village  being Session Clerk and Elder.   Sunday School Treasurer.  Also ont he Flower Show Committee,  Treasurer again.  Interested in the Village and its History.  Enjoy Scottish Borders History and was a Family Historian for 15 years until I ran out of family!!!  Recording Monumental Inscriptions!!!!  I like music, but got a varied taste.  Like Walking and enjoying the countryside.  Photography but my main pastime is Bird Watching and would just love to see a Kingfisher.  I also enjoy Driving.

Joji - I'm afraid I haven't found a pattern for a husky yet :), but they are one of my favourite breeds - great photos.

;D ;D ;D Jess - the nearest I have got to making a chicken are Easter chicks - and yes, they are knitted.

Forgot to mention that I still like keeping fit - go to a dance aerobic class once a week - there's life in the old girl yet :D........stems from doing quite a bit of stage dancing in my younger years and also ballroom dancing.  I must say that 'Strictly' has given me the urge to take it up again, but OH wont oblige unfortunately.

Gardengirl - if you took up some of the modern dances, you wouldn't need your OH (which might itself be a kick up the bum for him).  I love dancing and do modern jive (Ceroc), salsa and lindy hop.  I'm planning my trip to Herrang in Sweden with my boyfriend (month long dance camp) already, but lottie might suffer if I'm gone too long.

Also keen on DIY (currently replacing kitchen in anticipation of wonderful lottie gems) and doing furniture making evening class.

When I have any spare time left try and get out on my mountain bikes ... some friends of mine have huge hounds and they fasten the leashes to the bikes and then whoosh ... off the go through the woods - great fun !

Love to ride whenever I get to the country.  Fly fishing but haven't since I got married.

Okay, here goes.  I enjoy: reading contemporary novels; listening to a wide variety music (especially 60's rock and pop and David Bowie); cryptic crosswords; eating out in good restaurants; visiting modern art exhibitions (I'm a Tate member); supporting a variety of charities including fund-raising for Cats Protection; pottering around interesting markets and sitting outside a bar with a bottle of wine people watching.

Yes Eva Cassidy took a little while to grow on me, but I adore her voice and style. There are many female vocalists in my list, that is a prominent feature in my appreciation of music ...

I copied my list of an Access database Redclanger, sadly it is not up to date.

For instance there is no Steve Hackett (Genesis).

Plus

Apoptygma Beserk
Beautiful South
Blondie
Maroon 5
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Savage Garden
Pavement (thanks Red ...)
Melanie (thanks jennym)
Stereophonics

Leonard Cohen (thank you Oz ...)

I like your taste in music Derek and you have quite a few in there that I love.  Fairport Convention are on at the Sage in Gateshead in February and we hope to go to see them, have just been waiting until the holidays ended so I could book.

My OH would be keen to know whether anyone does collect stamps - yes really!! He is a very keen Stamp Collector himself, and can be quite embarrassing at times.  When I told him I had met someone recently from Australia, all he could say was "they do very nice stamps in Australia"!  ;D  busy_lizzie

The wombles belong rightfully collecting rubbish on Wimbledon Common ... IMHO

I really enjoy the blues, Gary Moore, Santana, Grateful Dead ... loved having 12 bar jams as well at our classes ... letting my hair down ...  ;D

I'll bring my 3CD Best of Ska set to the next Castle Square Market  RC! Incidently, as you like Inspiral Carpets I'll let Graham Lambert (Carpets guitarist) know - he'll be dead chuffed (He's an Oldham lad and a big OAFC supporter - once gave me a backstage pass for a big gig the Carpets were doing, I was expecting sex, drugs and rock n' roll, I should never have read that Rolling Stones biog!!)

My main other passions are (in no particular order):

Horse riding - I did have my own for a year, but sold him two years ago after his several attempts to kill me. I now ride a friend's horse every wednesday and have a lesson at the riding school at the weekend.

Reading - I'm mostly into non-fiction, although I do still enjoy Kurt Vonnegut and Philip K Dick's books. Mostly books on gardening, herbal medicine, ancient social and spiritual history (from about 6000-2000 years ago), philosophy.

Watching films - bizarre non-hollywood ones mostly.

Music - (let's see how many I can remember...)
The Beatles (later stuff)
Beethoven
Bjork
The Boards of Canada
David Bowie
David Byrne
Nick Drake
Grateful Dead
Jimi Hendrix
Jefferson Airplane
Janis Joplin
Joni Mitchel
Pink Floyd
Santana
Sedir Rose (or however it's spelt)
Shpongle
Cat Stevens
Frank Zappa
Drawing a blank now...

Photography - mostly plants and nature.

Cooking

spending time with Mr Aqui.

Aqui. I so love reading can never go to sleep without reading. Even if it is 3am after a party I still have to read!! Have got two books amongst my Christmas presents...Next to you (Gloria Hunniford) Extreme (Sharon Osbourne.) .Charlie had to put up extra shelves to hold books. Have got a whole set of Readers Digest People and places (very interesting). I never throw a hard back away, Goodness knows what the kids will do with them all when I am no longer around.
Have a real varied taste in music.. from Pavarotti to Bette Middler, Tammy Wynette etc etc.
I also used to ride when the kids all had ponies. My daughter bought a horse for her girls last year, I am afraid sciatica stops me from trying to ride again.

The book is called Papermaking techniques book by John Plowman. It mainly covers the basics and equipment which is what I need to get started, once I have the techniques right then I'll probably be on the look out for something that gives more inspiration so any book recommendations would be great too. :)

I've loved reading this!!!

Me too - interesting to know what everyone else does when they're not in the garden/allotment.

I had to give up church and also acting and theatre-going (I trained as a lecturer in acting) due to illness, but I seem to have plenty of other things to occupy my time.  I like reading (mostly fiction, especially SF & fantasy - though also love looking at the pictures in gardening books & planning what I'd put where in my dream garden!); I take a lot of photos (currently have elderly SLR camera & very keen to get into digital photography soooon) & make the best ones into greetings cards; I'm a member of National Trust, English Heritage & various other organisations & spend most of holidays visiting their gardens/properties; and I am also a Buffyatric (think of it as an addiction ...).

My music collection is a lot smaller & less eclectic than it would be if Romeo didn't have 2,000 plus CDs/tapes (which are all obsessively catalogued alphabetically) - I just listen to his.  If he didn't have them, my list would include Kirsty MacColl, Pulp, Beautiful South, U2, Roxy Music, David Bowie, Ultravox, Japan, Transvision Vamp, The White Stripes, The Alarm, A-Ha, Larry Norman, Meatloaf, & The Beach Boys - & undoubtedly several more I've forgotten.

Wow! Just reading all those different hobbies makes a girl feel exhausted. But it's nice to find other people who have such a variety of hobbies (a lot of people I know complain constantly about having nothing to do, but refuse get up of their sofa and find an something they can enjoy).

Currently I am learning to play guitar, studying Eng Lit & Lang, listening to loads of different music, reading books, mostly fantasy but I'll give anything a go if the story looks good, gardening, cooking (hopefully with a lot of my own home grown stuff next year!) and I recently acquired a book on preserving, painting and drawing, going to see art exhibitions, recycling (yes, I know it's sad but It's becoming such an obsession that I think it could classed as a hobby), learning about aromatherapy and sustainable living.

Music I love to listen to:  Pink Floyd, The Who, Red hot chili peppers, queens of the stone age, nina simone, sade, greenday, hard-fi, jeff buckley, jack johnson, meat loaf (so uncool, i know), jet, the killers, KT Tunstall (her album is fab), nirvana, radiohead, seth lakeman, scissor sisters, the beatles (recently discovered sgt pepper and the white album) santana, the darkness, morissey, foo fighters, artic monkeys, the verve, coldplay, sugarcult, the bravery, rufus wainwright, ash......thats all i can remember at the mo.

I love board games (was trying to make an allotment one but other things got in the way), reading (sci-fi & sci-fact, humour, horror, fantasy, TPerry, Tom Sharpe,..) and my main outside of gardening hobby is learning Welsh.

Music-wise, Pink Floyd, REM, Monaco, New Order, Meinir Gwilym, "Dangerous Plums", Simply Red, Wet Wet Wet, Beautiful South, Meatloaf, Bonzo Dog Doodah Band, Enya, Mike Oldfield, .....
Registered for an OU course - creative writing, due to start in Feb. Awaiting course materials at present.

Love listening to the radio - BBC Radio 4 (Deadringers, The Archers, GQT, ISIHAC, Just a Minute, ....) and when I feel like it, BBC7 on the web. There is no TV here, though when was at folks, watched CSI, Casualty &  Holby City (the seasonal special - I know where that tunnel is, and it isn't in Holby/Bristol!), whatever was on though I missed Mary Poppins & Chitty.....
