Title: Share a Folk Lore Saying!
Post by: flowerlady on December 16, 2005, 16:45:47
Quote
Old Folk Lore: "Plant garlic on the shortest day and it will be ready on the longest"  busy_lizzie .

Would anyone like to share with us any Folk Lore saying that they know of?

I know there on some folk on here that could impart a wealth of information  ;D

Here's one:

"He who plants a Rhodedendrum, should be red hot pokered up the bum"

That one rhymes - sorry to your old man Lottie buit we do really have too many of them already.

Never put a frog in a bucket.... ;D ;D ;D
And yes, Wards, completely barmy!! Though he has told me how to catch a bunny on the plot, apparently, you start walking in ever decreasing circles around the bunny as it's munching your cabbage,  starting a fair distance away, and apparently cos of their poor depth perception, you can end up right next to them, pick  'em up by ears and give them a firm teling off!! Of course, if you start the circle too big, the bunny will probaby have got bored and left....... ;D
And Ady, you can never have enough lil ol men.....honestly, bit harsh of you I feel... ;)
Title: Re: Share a Folk Lore Saying!

1. Sow seed with a waxing, never a waning moon
2. Incorporate scrapings of topsoil from below pines and spruces when planting, and then mulch with pine and spruce needles, crushed fir cones and even twigs to improve the strawberries’ flavour
3. Plant marigolds in the flower and vegetable garden and greenhouse
4. Grow foxgloves in your garden to stimulate growth and disease resistance among your other plants5. A single clove of garlic planted beside a rose will keep greenfly away from the plant
6. Bananas planted under roses will ensure strong, healthy plants
7. Pour left over tea into your houseplants
8. The liquid run-off from compost heaps, known as ‘compost tea’ helps keep plants healthy

Have I redeemed myself??

Not really sure about how folk lorey some of these are but they are on the RHS site as floklore.

Or will that make it pink...........

They are simple folk in Suffolk Max, don't read too much into it - they really do need to be told not to put a worm on their heads or they would all be doing it - and carrying frogs around in buckets etc.

This is a problem at all large gatherings and can be witnessed in the North Stand at Portman Road at the height of worm season.

Max, you put as many worms as you like on your head....I'm sure it is just a myth anyway....really..... in fact, I will send you your own bucket of frogs and enough worms for a whole head.... you go ahead and enjoy yourself.. ::) Anyway, if I told you then I'd have to silence you, is Suffolk Law

Ady, is ok cos everyone lets their frogs go, and they clean up the worm mess....anyway, it distracts from the awful football...

The worm is supposed to have psychedelic properties as it feeds exclusively on peyote cactus which the native Americans injest to transcend to a higher plane.  Being a veggie, I cannot attest to whether this is true or not as I have never had the drink.

You'd need teeny weeny pegs wouldn't you....and wouldn't they go crispy? The worms, not the pegs... ::) Ooo then you could put them in the tequilla!! Ah see, I knew I'd get there......
Title: Re: Share a Folk Lore Saying!
Post by: terces on December 21, 2005, 15:31:28
It basically means don't do anything in the garden until May has gone as the weather is so unpredictable until then.  I think clout probably refers to clout nails as in making sheds etc.  It's an old Lancashire saying.
My cousin used to peg worms when he was very small but I wouldn't advise it! ;D
