Title: Is this correct
Post by: chuff on December 10, 2005, 19:36:23
I read somewhere on the internet that winter time is the best time to build a pond because all the froggies and toads mate at this time of year. I thought it was spring time. Perhaps they like to cuddle cos its cold ;D

Hello Chuff. Are you sure it wasn't an Australian website?  ;D Frogs and toads are in semi hibernation at present and do not eat or move about at all.Mine are sitting soulfully at the bottom of their pond and my deepest fish pond. However, come the warmer weather they reappear in pairs which always makes me laugh! Then they get onto the business in hand ;D

The best time to build a pond is  early spring when the ground is damp and there is plenty of rain to fill the pond, and the plants are getting going.

It might have been, I'm not sure, it was a wildlife website I came across when I was looking for info on badgers and foxes so I presumed it was a uk site. I shall have another look. thanks for the reply. I will add it to my list of spring jobs ;D

Apart from anything else you need a good depth if the pond is not to freeze solid and the soil is pretty hard to dig at this time of year.
