Hope there is heaps of the stuff, right up past my waist or deeper.  Trouble with being 'dan saff' in w.sussex is that they must have voted winter out cos a few frosts and its back to spring again.

Well it goes without saying. I want and love the stuff and if we get so much that I can use my dog teams on the main road ( like last year ). We will be very happy. ;D

One thing to think about. I know if it does get bad we won't starve as the dogs will take us shopping. ;D

Obviously that time of year again.
For all you snow lovers....

DIARY OF A SNOW SHOVELER

December 8: 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the
season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the
window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It
looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic, we felt like newlyweds
again. I love snow!

December 9: We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow
covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there
be a more lovely place in the whole world? Moving here was the best
idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like
a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon
the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the
driveway, so got to shovel again. What a perfect life.

December 12: The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment.
My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas.

No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by
the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think
that's possible. Bob is such a nice man. I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14: Snow, lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to
-20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away,
but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life!
The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't
realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly
get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15: 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.
Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra! shovels. Stocked the
freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I
think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16: Ice storm this morning. Fell on the ice in the
driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour,
which I think was very cruel.

December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay
warm. Nothing to do, but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her.
Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I
hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own
living room.

December 20: Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the ???? stuff
last night. More shoveling. Took all day. snowplow came by twice. Tried to
find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing
hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see
about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in
March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have
it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

December 22: Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of
the white ???? fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till
August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and
then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again, I
was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the

rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the %#$hole is lying.

December 23: Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted
me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What, is she nuts!!! Why
didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did, but I think
she's lying.

December 24: 6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought
I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a ????? who drives
that snowplow, I'll drag him out and pound him flat! I know that he waits
for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at 100 miles
an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife
wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I
was too busy watching for the snowplow.

December 25: Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the friggin slop tonight.
Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him
over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think
she's an idiot. If I have to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" one more time,
I'm going to kill her.

December 26: Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was
all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27: Temperature dropped to -50 and the pipes froze, but at least
it is too cold to snow!!!!!!!!

December 28: Warmed up to above -30, still can't snow any more though....
SNOWED ANYWAY, and the HAG is driving me crazy!!!

December 29: 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it
could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he
think I am?

December 30: Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a million
dollars for the bump on his head. The wife went home to her mother. 9"
predicted for tonight.

December 31: Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling!

January 8: I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep
giving me, but why am I tied to the bed?

;D ;D ;D ;D

No sorry no pics of last year as I didn't have my camara. Will deffo do some this year though for you to see. :)

Forecasters Warning

-- Heavy Snow & Blizzards --

Areas Affected: - Northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland -

The UK will see the onset of it's first major wintry spell of weather from Thursday onwards as strong Northerly winds usher in some very cold arctic air. This will bring not only significant windchill values but snow is expected to be a significant problem.

Frequent and often heavy showers will turn increasingly to snow by the end of the day on Thursday across many parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Northeast England. North Wales and Southwest England may also be at risk. Settling snowfall is expected especially over higher ground and with winds gusting up to gale force and locally severe gale force over Scotland blizzard conditions are expected even at relatively low levels for a time.

More persistent snowfall is then expected for the North during the course of Friday and into Saturday. There remains some significant uncertainty over the extent of this and more detail will be available over the coming days.

-- Fog & Ice --

Areas Affected: - Inland parts of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland-

Further dense fog and freezing fog is expected over the next couple of days within the above areas. Travelling conditions will be hazardous and where any fog is freezing ice deposites are possible.

Will look forward to the piccys :)

There was a farmer on Look North on BBC last night who contests the Weather Centres forcast of a bad winter.  He was going by the signs of nature around him.  Looking at the hills, the birds and the berries etc.  He doesn't think it is going to be so bad.  So it will be interesting to see who is right.   :) busy_lizzie

Heard on the radio this morning there is a 65% chance of a really bad Winter, BUT, that leaves a 55% chance that there won't be. Being the optimist, I'm with the 55%.  ;D  ;D

At the moment I'm wrapped in 2 layers, plus a scarf around by neck, and have had no heating on all day.  I'm trying to acclimatize and save heating, just in case.  ;)

U/C don't even try to understand me its a fatal mistake OH gave up many years ago - hope you and Heldi got back in from the school run Ok :)

Heldi - I'm dead jealous you live on the coast, anywhere coastal and windy I just feel really at home and one of my most favourite places in Britain is Holy Island :)

Bet you wished you hadn't left your deerstalker on the Enterprise eh Jean Luc ?!

I did get home from school...at blinking 5 o'clock!  Another chicken saga. Walked to school with daughter in pram. She was snuggled up in blankets and with raincover over and went to sleep. I forgot my gloves. My hands hurt so much I could've cried. Whilst waiting for son to come out from school ...why is he always last...I noticed my daughters "magic" gloves in the pocket of the pram. They fit! So off to the lotty we went to put the hens to bed, after their porridge  :D . I was in the shed sorting out their bedding when my son came running over and told me there was a dead bird in the allotment.  I assumed it would be a seagull as they are sometimes blown down with the big gusts of wind. Anyway off I went to look and double take. There was a hen huddled up in a corner of an old compost heap. Thought it was one of mine at first, puzzled and had to check the pen twice, yep all mine were in the pen eating porridge. Didn't know what to do. Phoned OH who just happened to be on his way home with a rabbit hutch his mate had given him. As you do! So son and I waited for OH to arrive. Daughter snoozing thankfully. Was blinking freezing.  We put sad knackered hen into the hutch with some bedding, food and water. What else could we do? Couldn't put her with ours incase of disease.  Went to check this morning. She is sitting with her head up.eyes open but not at all happy. Don't think she'll last to be honest. We wondered if she came across from the allotment next door. He seems to have virtually abandoned his flock of old hens.  This hen felt very thin.  :(  So I don't know how it got there, where it came from or what to do for the best.

It is freezing here today. Wind is still fierce. Had a short sprinkling of polystyrene bobbles last night which remained until mid morning. Gone now. I bet if I ventured inland a couple of miles there'll be snow. I'm moving!

I wonder what you did with your time before you had the chickens Heldi!

I hope you can revive this little hen - Heldi to the rescue!!!!

Keep us informed.

We are opposite to you , snow on the coast but not inland, how strange ::)

If the hens opposite are being neglected, I would report the cruel b*****d to the RSPCA.  At least then the hens should be rescued.

Verrrr cold like everywhere else but no snow!!!   OH and me attempted to travel to Edinburgh this morning though but got as far as 10 miles up the road and hit the snow on the roads with a blizzard blowing.  The pair of us must be getting old, cos we turned round and came home again!! what a come down!!!  The pair of us has driven in all roads in all sorts of bad weather but now we think twice.  Is this the sign of becoming old??   oh dear.

I can't tell for definate Redclanger. He said another alloment holder was taking them on. Haven't seen them for a few days so I assumed they had been moved. This hen that has arrived looks like one of them though. But how will I ever tell? Where are his other hens? Would someone who has looked after them for years suddenly abandon them? I even thought someone might have thought it was one of mine and bunged it over the fence. Or just bunged it over the fence anyway. :(   If this hen makes it we will be keeping her. I don't think it looks like she will.I've tried to make her comfortable but wonder if she should be put down? I wanted to give her a chance but you know I don't know enough yet about hens,I'm learning all the time. I hope I'm doing the right thing. If I ask another allotment hen keeper I know they'll say kill her. She's old and they'll not see her worth.

I know those chooks take up so much of my time! Mind you when it's sunny I just sit in a chair and watch them...busy doing nothing, doing it very well!

Why do we all feel so guilty succumbing to our caring side ...

To me this is what makes life worth living, but then I think I am a lost voice. I care not, I am truly happy with my choices.

Unfortunately it has died :(  I would have brought it home Wardy but I made the decision to make it as comfy as possible at the lotty. I thought it would have been frightened by the dog ,who would have gone mental if she smelled it,the cat would've been in there and the kids wouldn't have left it alone. I thought it would be less traumatic to move it about. Poor thing. It was warm in it's little hutch, I put a stack of bedding in and then put a carpet over to stop the drafts. Oh well atleast I tried.

Just had a few icy raindrops. Brrr! Went right down my neck.  Right, off to eat some sweets and make tea at the same time.

I've just read your post Heldi, you did all you could for the chookie. At least she didn't die in the coop and spent the night cold.

It might be worth giving your chooks yogurt and putting ACV into their water tomorrow just in case the sick one had any disease....make yours a bit more resistant if you can.

Whats happening to the other chooks at the allotment??

The other chooks have been rescued by the bloke who was supposed to be taking them in the first place. The guy who owned them had not got back to him, OH happened to chat to him and mentioned the chooks in passing. The bloke said "I bloody hope he's not just leaving them to starve" So he went straight away to pull the guy and get the poor old hens. They'll be happy now. He has four hens already and keeps them for his little granddaughter to see.

Thanks for the tip AC. What type of yoghurt do I give?  My hens were well away from the old hen but its best to be safe rather than sorry.

Dennis is crowing like a good un now. He's so funny, the others look a bit miffed at all the noise he makes.  It's very cold here again. There has been so much freezing rain that many places are flooded, including my back garden and my allotment.
