Title: weblog?
Post by: paranoid mandroid on October 27, 2005, 13:18:21
i was toying with the idea of doing a weblog of my experiences with my garden/chickens/polytunnel along with trying new things in the future (wind/solar power and geese definitely).  i would have pics and hopefully videos and would like suggestions from everyone about what to put in it or maybe a few unusual things to grow/try next season.

maybe someone from here is already doing the same thing?

feedback/suggestions would be great  :)

You won't think mine's very professional, I'm usually too pushed to write much (in my signature). It's been rather neglected since I was ill over the summer.

Actually, Robert, is very interesting! Especially since I happen to have in my possession several Roman coins!! LOL! There's a little man who takes his metal detector over Dad's farm, and having a real interest in history, Dad passes things to me!! I'm also in charge of the family bible, which is very scary!! Has all the hand written entries of birth/deaths etc for the last 200 yrs.....Love it! But am too terrified to make entries at min..... ::) ::) ::) Hope you're feeling better.

Interesting Robert - I too have a passion for Roman and have a ring, two lamps and a hairpin to start my collection off.  Haven't dug anything up yet though despite living in Lincoln  :(

I haven't tried detecting, but ancient coins are totally addictive. Here's one of my favourites (Probus, 276-82). He was a successful general who siezed power, and dreamed of being able to do without the need for an army. He was eventually lynched by soldiers who rioted over having to do agricultural work.

Think it's probably a complete waste of time posting this pic!! The coins are filthy, I have no idea how to clean them!! The camera is crap!! But, I thought you may recognise something, Robert!! LOL! WOuld happily send them to get an idea of what they are! Know some are Roman, but some not...Oh well, here goes nothing!!  Lottie   ;D

You've got a mixture here. The big ones are what are called 'slugs', ie coins with the detail worn off. They're probably either early Roman or 'Roman Provincial' struck at nominally 'independent' city mints on the eastern Med. If they're UK finds, assume the former. The one on the left with a building on it is a 'campgate', a type produced by Constantine I, the guy who made Christianity legal, boiled his wife alive in the bath, and did various other interesting things. It'll have either him or one of his sons on the other side. It celebrated the 'providence of the emperors' in fortifying the empire after its near-collapse in the previous century under attack by various 'barbarians'. The one at bottom left looks late Roman but I can't say more than that. I'd need better pics to get any further.

here's a pic of a nice campgate from the Arles mint.

Thanks Robert!! Am in Awe! You got all that from my crap pics! Have an ice cream tub full of stuff, and have no idea what it is! Have taken it to museum, but they too busy, if interested have buckles, broaches (I think!) buttons all sorts! Thanks again.

I don't know anything about the other stuff, but coins I'm OK with. Those silvers look quite worn - I can't see what they are - but if you can get better pics I can probably work it out. Pics of both sides make it a lot easier.

I think the silver at top left is medieval. Edward I pennies are the commonest.

I have heard that if you put coins in Coka cola it will clean them. I think you should only leave them for 24hrs or the coke starts eating the coins as well.

Don't put coins in coke unless you know exactly what you're doing! Coke contains acid - phosphoric if I remember right. That's OK for good silver; I emphasise 'good' because many silver coins are seriously debased, they may only be 20-30% silver. Any acid  eats copper. If you want to clean coins, join the FORVM boards at http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php , there's a whole section devoted to coin cleaning. You won't find a satisfactory chemical way of cleaning copper; believe me, I've tried them all.

Just beware of that cat they do love newly dug and prepared soil?
Keep up the blog I'll be looking in.

Hi Chris, im in the north west tip of northern ireland on the coast in a place called Benone its not on the map cos its just countryside, we are near a town called Limavady.
There were no onions this year because of the cat and his fascination with the newly dug beds.
Im still brainstorming for ideas to keep him away but he is harmless otherwise - he loves the chickens though - he could sit all day and watch them!
I'll have pics of him and the chickens on the blog soon.

Hi Don
Thanks for the Info, bet you get hit by some pretty awfull weather up there?
The only failsafe way to keep the cat off (I have 2) is netting or some type of barrier, mine make a beeline for any newly dug soil.
Keep up the Blog. Does it cost money to start one?
Regards
Chris

Don - a breath of fresh air. Know it well!!

Forgive me butting in as usual, but this is a view of 'our' house, Glenkeen, on the left, next to the McCrackens' farm, 1955-7.  The road goes 1 1/2 miles to the right to Limavady, where the boys went to the Convent.

Taken through 1 of the 8 propellers of my Shackleton on the approach to Ballykelly airfield.

a weblog doesn't cost anything - just go to blogger.com

tim is that on the seacoast road? i dont recognise it. is it still called glenkeen? where are you based now?

wardy -
1. No - but we love them. Top & bottom. My navigator was from Dublin. How? My co-pilot was earning his keep!

2. Blog? Back to the professionals.

Don -
1. Nooooo! Not the A2 - the A37 Coleraine road. The one I used to get a fresh coconut from Belfast (70 miles?) for a special squadron curry night. Oh, young fool!!
2. Based now? - you have to be joking?? Well, at least, a mile from an airfield!

CORRECTION - not the A37 - the B66 toward Ballymoney. Had a bad map!

ah the main road from limavady - coleraine? i thought it was seacoast road because the land looked so flat. so you're not in the forces anymore are you back home?
my house is the last cottage before benone corner (on the way to coleraine) where the turn-off for the beach is.
when were you last in the area?

Imagine what it does to the stomach?

I don't know if this has been posted before but in answer to your question.......
The properties of WATER:

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is
often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as
3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost
100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the 1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day
could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzz short-term memory,
trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer
screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon
cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is
50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

And now for the properties of COKE:

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons
of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car
accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in
two days

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and
let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric
acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a
rumpled-up piece of Reynolds wrap aluminium foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of
Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to
the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan,
wrap the ham in aluminium foil, and bake Thirty minutes before the ham
is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the
Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of
greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle.  The
Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.

9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It
will dissolve a nail in about?4 days.  Phosphoric acid also leaches
calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase
in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck
must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for highly corrosive
materials.

3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of
their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a coke or a glass of water?

Have you any other photos of magilligan? i love older photos of the area. me, my father and my grandfather have all been raised at the same address and now (the house in the pic on the blog) i live only 3 doors away from my parents house. so magilligan is definitely in the blood.

I started my blog last year when I first got my plot. It's a great way to remember (and laugh) at what you did at first, what worked and what didn't. I think I'll find it really useful next year as a sort of 'quick guide' to when to plant stuff.

On a technical note it's best to use one of the free blogging applications out there. I'm using WordPress (http://wordpress.org/) which is really easy to set up. But you can use Blogger, or Jot Spot etc whatever you like the look of really.

You'll need some kind of file transfer software (although WordPress comes with one in built now). Try a free FTP package like Transit or similar. And if you want to upload pictures you'll need a simple image editor to resize your images to fit your template.

It might take a bit of effort to setup but it will be worth it.
Good luck.
