Title: Best Gigs
Post by: madmum on September 04, 2005, 13:54:24
Was listening to Rolling Stones and eldest son said "this is not as good as Elvis"!
Felt he was old enough to tell him that before mum had children she did indeed have a real life and was lucky enough to have seen the Rolling Stones at Wembley Stadium. It was the best gig I have ever been to, although U2 on the Joshua Tree tour was outstanding!

What other gigs do peeps rate as the best they've been to?

p.s am trying to avoid taking eldest to Oxford in Nov to see Shakin Stevens, because "he's nearly Elvis Mum and I think he's just as cool!" This would be his first gig and I think it may ruin him for life!

Saw REM at Hull KC recently and that was a lifetime's ambition fulfiled - and yes it did come up to expectations.  Saw Ozric Tentacles in Bournemouth and the music tied in with the lights was ace.  Saw the Orb at De Montfort University - same comment applies.  Saw the Waterboys blow up the sound system accoustically at Rock City, saw Jesus and Mary Chain in Bristol.....

Oh just cannot choose.

But Showaddywaddy when I was about 11 does not enter the list  :)

should I let him see Shaky then?
Did Showaddywaddy have an impact on you?

I can't contribute directly because I don't go to gigs as such! I used to be keen on the local folk circuits though, and did a few festivals. I reckon the best gigs I have been to though in all honesty have been those organised by our local guitar group, reported separately. There is something very exciting about seeing local talent . . .

The Pogues at Leeds Uni. (I still have the scars...!)

The Smiths at Carlisle City Hall.

Green Day anywhere!

I was very lucky in the Sixties as I worked at Newcastle Civic Centre in the department that managed The City Hall, and the Manager would let us take up any empty seats or even stand at the back to see who ever we wanted to.  So whoever was popular in those days I have seen.  The memorables  were Jimmie Hendrix, The Who, Gene Pitney and some of the Tamla Motown Groups, with their matching satin suits and quirky dance movement.

In recent years we saw the heavy metal group Thunder at the City Hall.  At the time I loved their song "low life in high places" and much to my surprise as a Christmas present my son bought me and my OH tickets to see them.  They were great, but it was the audience that made the night with their head banging and moshing.  It is a wonder the roof didn't get blown off.  I have never seen such enthusiam and energy, but boy were my ears sore at the end of the night, I couldn't hear a thing for days afterwards.

Someone I would love to see is James Taylor, who I have heard gives a brilliant concert.  :) busy_lizzie

The Rolling Stones, Bridges to Babylon tour was brill, as was Elton John, Robbie Williams (drool) at Knebworth was pretty good, but too many peeps as he was the size of a Polly Pocket to us at the back!
In my younger days I saw the Police, they were fab too.
Terrance, hubby took daughter and friends to see Greenday earlier in the year, they said it was a good concert.
Now the ones I would like to see at the mo are the Kaiser Chiefs!

Saw the Pogues at one of the small standing only venues at Birmingham NEC and that was a great gig - just post Rum Sodomy & the Lash.  Saw them a while later at a NEC Arena and the sound was just lost - no good at all.

...Levellers many times, Hawkwind (in various guises because I lived in Bath) loads of times, Hippy Slags (used to go round their house and half of Hawkwind would always be there - it was a squat) Ian Brown at Rock City...

I'm a rock fan by heart and been to some fabulous gigs but I have to say that my two favourite gigs have to be Harry Connick Jnr at the Albert Hall and BB King at Westcliff!

Someone mentioned Meatloaf, I've been a fan of his since I was about 13 (am now 38!) and I got to see him for the first time last year at Wembley.  The music completely blew me away but his voice was downright dreadful - but that may be down to the fact that he'd recently had heart surgery and wasn't top notch!!

My biggest regret is that I never got to see Queen before Freddie passed away.  They've been my favourite band for 25years and when I could eventually afford to go I passed on it and a couple of years later he died.

We had a really good music club in my town when I was a teenager. Saw loads of great bands before they were famous - Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, Ocean Colour Scene. Which was great. Recently, I went to see Graham Coxon play a  solo gig which was very good.

I do like big stadium concerts too - went to see Robbie at Knebworth which was a brilliant experience (sorry Adam!  :)) taking 5 hours to get out of the car park however took the edge of it.

my first gig, Razorlight, lets see how young you are if you know them, and they were really good, much better than i ever thought, and standing just made it so much more fun.

Oasis, were AWESUM too.

I love Razorlight, does that make me very young!????

I listen  to their album loads at the minute, missed them in tour though, but saw them at Glastonbury (on the TV) they looked brilliant.

Are you really 15??!!! I thought that was just a joke to be honest you lied about your age!

I was like you  Yellow Petals.  We went to see 'Meat Loaf'  2 months after his Heart Attack and I was so so disappointed.  His singing was just awful.

During the last 20 odd years, I have seen a number of gigs. mostly in Glasgow but saw  Billy Joel at Wembley.  I thought he was not good but OH was happy!!!!

I have seen Dire Straits,  they were superb and think the best gig I have seen.   They are closely followed by Chris Rea and Chris de Burg.   Cher was quite good especially the costume changing and the backing and lighting.  I saw Tom Jones at Edinburgh Castle about 3 years ago.  He was good as well but the rain started and couldnt see much for umbrellas so I insisted we leave earliesh!!   My OH hasa had the pleasure of seeing Bryan Adams couple of years back.  I was asked to go but I said NO.  Oh dear, big mistake, wish I had gone now.  He has also seen U2 at Murrayfield also Jimmy Paige and Robert Plant again at Glasgow.  The biggest regret?   not seeing Freddie Mercury and Queen.  I would have loved to have seen them in concert.

I was at the Royal ALbert Hall yonks ago to see Harry Connick Junior.
Must confess to waiting outside for him afterwards (said it was yonks ago) Got him to sign my programme and got a kiss as well

Would have loved to have been at the R.A.H to see Robbie do Swing when you're winning.

Genesis at Wembley was another good one,
would love to see Coldplay.

I was a lucky girl and worked for a record company before the sproggles came along so got to attend masses of concerts.  Couldn't put my finger on who was the best, Fine Young Cannibals was the first, saw INXS was the most.  U2, very dissapointing as the lovely Bono started ranting on about politics!, Simple Minds were great, took my darling dad to see his hero, Elton, lots of times.  Sting at the Albert Hall was great as we had seats at the very side of the stage, and Eric Clapton and Wembly stadium made me cry when he sung Wonderful Tonight!

I love music, and love to see musicians and singers doing their stuff!

Gosh, I just love live music. Best gigs can cover so much. Love going to our local for the fortnightly blues(ish) jam session - some of them are so good. Free lunchtime concert at the festival Hall just before christmas listening to The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain was such fun. Bruce Springsteen at Wembley, Pink Floyd doing the Wall at Earls Court, Paul McCartney there more recently, I could go on. Its just great isn't it?

Meatloaf at Wembley Stadium 5 years ago.  He was absolutely wonderful, I was in ecstasy!  OH just stayed sitting down quietly while I was up singing and dancing with the stranger next to me!  I don't know how he could just sit there!  I have converted my daughter so we listen together now but she loves Greenday too and was at the concert that DP's daughter went to, which she too enjoyed. She is keeping an eye out for when Meatfloaf next does a tour.

I've been to some god awful gigs over the past few years.  Mine and my husband's musical tastes couldn't be any more different!  He likes Kylie, Britney, Steps, Atomic Kitten etc etc and I love Queen, Bryan Adams, Genesis, Eagles, Meatloaf, Pink Floyd, John Waite etc.  I've had to see Britney twice (and she is even worse live than she is in the studio - she mimed her entire concert at Wembley last year) Kylie five times (although I'm not a fan, she puts on a great theatrical type show) Atomic Kitten three times and Steps (sob)
all in the name of love!  Saw Bon Jovi at Hyde Park last year - fantastic gig - over three hours, but the venue was too big for my liking.  I've seen Bryan Adams three times and he's fabulous.  Texas are also fabulous live (going again this October) Went to see Phil Collins at Wembley last year too - shame it wasn't Genesis but I guess he'll do, hehehe.  I've seen Peter Gabriel three times and he also puts on an incredibly theatrical show (I guess anybody who was lucky enough to see him fronting Genesis knows this!)

A gig wish list:  John Waite, The Eagles, Pink Floyd and Genesis

Best gig I never went to - Live 8.

I was working in the garden all day to the strains of Robbie, Madge, etc drifting over from Hyde Park - could hear 'em all as clear as a bell. I'll never forget later that evening  listening to the band I never thought I'd hear live - the Floyd - standing among the sweetcorn in the dark, waving my arms in the air, much to the surprise of passers by and the delight of the neighbours (who know me well).

And best of all, no crowds, no travelling, and plenty of gardening done!

 ;D ;D ;D

Madmum, it's a shame "The King" isn't still performing, well not as far as I can see.  He's a really good Elvis impersonator who does a few Elvis covers but mostly does covers of songs by dead people in an Elvis style.  If you can halfway imagine Nirvana's "Come As You Are" done by Elvis you'll get the fun of it all.

As for best gigs, well I've see Fun Lovin' Criminals 6 times and they've never let me down, but last year I saw Morrissey at Old Trafford and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Camden and I can't decide between the two for best gig...so those two.

Oh...and I saw Air a few years back...and Mercury Rev...and Divine Comedy at Reading...too many to chose from.

M.

We were on holiday a few years ago in London and went to Harrods (as you do). We also had a walk around the Knightsbridge/Chelsea area and had a look into some of the big enclosed private  street gardens around there, when all of a sudden we heard singing -  a big booming voice. We thought at the time it was a radio  or someones hifi or even someone singing in a restaurant.  I remember saying "he's got quite a good voice".  We had to laugh at that later when we discovered that it had been Pavorroti who was singing at a big concert in one of the parks.   :) busy_lizzie

A couple of my faves have been Ash at Reading in ummm.... 2001 I think. I went on me lonesome, and threw myself in to the mosh with all of my energy, cos I had no-one to get seperated from.

Saw the White Stripes a few years ago at Shepherd's Bush, just as they were getting quite big. Amazing how a guitar and drums could sound so massive!

Also enjoyed Jet at the Zodiac in Oxford a little while ago, and quite a few years ago saw a couple of great Aussie bands when I still lived in Hobart - The Living End and Area 7

Have seen the Foo Fighters at various festivals over the years too, and they are great.

Agree with DP, would love to see the Kaiser Chiefs!

is hard to believe there are only 2 members to the White Stripes isn't it. The sound they produce is huge and they have a great stage presence, better than a lot of 5 peice + bands!

would also love to see the Kaiser Chiefs live, they are great too  :)

Oh, and Adam04 - I do believe you now! Just amazed because you have so much knowledge - when you make it on to Gardeners World or win your first gold at Chelsea remember us at A4A  (and I do not mean to be patronising, you obviously have a lot of drive and passion about gardening to do it the level you do at the age of 15)

Hi All,

Lots of live gigs in the 80s, no particular reason, just love live music. Now only small local bands as I don't see the point of huge venues.

However, 2 festivals are in my top 10 - Blackbush with Bob Dylan and Joan Armatrading and Led Zeppelin at Knebworth (along with Chas and Dave  :o)

All Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett etc - goes without saying

Roy Wood - Wizzard - 0nly because it was our Christmas party at Poly and he played THE song live - more fun than that would result in death by overload.

Rush - just brilliant, 2112 live - unbelievable

The Who - nuff said

Motorhead - Bomber- what a show

The Chillun - my mates band, enjoyed every gig, even when there were less than 2 of us in the audience!

The Tubes - who remembers them? Pure lunacy.

Roy Harper - in a village hall with a large bottle of scotch under his seat.

The Police at Gatehead Stadium 1982

U2 Newcastle City Hall 1983 (twice) and, not really a gig but U2 on The Tube 1983 where I jumped up onto the stage and had a dance with Bono.

Sting 2004 Newcastle Arena, first gig I'd been to in eons and it was fab.

Neil Diamond 2005.

1. Queen - Newcastle City Hall. Blew your socks off.

2. John Denver - small venue in Newcastle, just him with a couple of backing guitarists. Superb voice. Wonderful, calm, uplifting evening.

3. Bucks' Fizz - Really (and surprisingly) rocked. Terrific.

4. Cliff Richard - NEC and Wembley. The man can sing.

The common thread? None of them had the slightest problem with singing and performing 'live'.

Five magical evenings.

Missed opportunities... ?  Tina Turner, K D Lang, Garth Brooks.

Heldi,  you're lucky...I took my mum to see Neil Diamond in  2003, I usually quite like him too and the price of the tickets was astronomical and there was no atmosphere at all, it was the worst gig I've ever been too.

Gadfium,

My turn to be jealous, I would love to have seen John Denver! Although from my list you can see that in those days( and now I suppose) I was a rock fan, I think he has one of the most stunning and identifiable voices in music and I still miss him.   :'(

Strangely enough I bought a CD a couple of weeks ago and my sister took it home with her on Sunday to reminisce, hugely enjoyable.

The original Woodstock. (If only - far too young for that - but the film was fabulous!) and The Grateful Dead's Europe '72 tour (ditto re age - but the album is great!)

But ones I've actually been to (not a huge number - best first):
David Byrne a couple of years ago - saw him twice, first time was best - right by the stage - literally - his base player was rather nice!
Julian Cope in 96 - really fun
Divine Comedy in 96/7 - pretty good
Reading in 94 - the Chilli Peppers were good
REM - Milton Keynes in 95 - pretty naff. Will never go to a big stadium gig again (except a festival).

Living on the I.W. I was lucky enough to see all three of the early pop festivals here. I must have seen all the great names of the time along with all the 'beautiful people' As my gardening skills at the time consisted of just growing certain pot plants, I cannot remember a lot of it. But as they say "If you can remember the sixties you wern't  there".
I have now returned to flower power but in a different sort of way.

The new I.W. festivals still create a lot of fun for the youngsters but since I have turned into my dear old dad, I call it the Devils music ;

I do get to play some backing tracks nowadays for some famous names. But it is all done remotely in a studio. I play my bit and it is dubbed in somewhere else if they like it , so I never get to meet the bands.

I told my wife when I first met here that I was very nearly rich and very nearly famous. She is still waiting.

Me thinks Eric Clapton concert my husband and  saw at Earls Court ranks highly and when I was 13 I saw Mud (Tiger Feet and all that).....and the Queen waved to me and hubby and children a few years back on the way back to Sandringham House. Our cars passed ,only two on the road so it was us he waved too. I would have rather it been the band though ,instead of H.R.H!
