Title: one more newbie!!
Post by: Truffle on August 24, 2005, 16:40:21
Hi all,

This site looks excellent. I should hopefully get my new allotment on Saturday, my back yard is also turned over to more herbs, veggies and fruit you can shake a stick at.....but I need more room!

Anyway just thought I would say hi to everyone. Also, I'm trained plant biologist so hopefully I can also contribute to the site....

Anyway, hi again!

Hello truffle - I had to turn my back garden over to flowers when I go a lottie.  This year, my OH has killed off the herbs I have had for about 7 years.  Looks like I will have to start kleeping these at the lottie too.

Loads of biology pleeeeease.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies!

Yes I do indeed grow truffles! I developed some technology a couple of years ago and am currently in the process of getting finance and working with partners to establish 'truffle-plantations'.

They are actually really cool things, they grow in symbiosis with the roots of some trees. The fungus covers the root surface and provides the tree with nutrients and water and adds to the general health/vigour of the tree, in return the tree gives the fungus carbon. These types of fungus are called mycorrhizal by us scientists. Theres even some research to suggest that massive trees can 'feed' saplings through the connection formed by the fungus, much in the way that a mother feeds a child......really weird stuff. ;D

They are also notoriously hard to grow, but we think we've cracked it ;) Just gotta wait around 5-6years before we see a return.

And yes undercarriage plan, your right, we do search for them with pigs (they give off a scent similar to a mating pig) or more usually trained dogs. As for their taste, they are awesome! Very pungent and powerful rich fungi taste, unbelievable, you gotta try em!

Anyway our website is www.MycorrhizalSystems.com and theres some basic info on there if anyone wants to know anything else.

Thanks again and I really glad I found this website!!

Thanks MikeB,

It depends on what kind of mushrooms your talking about. Theres a massive variety that you can grow on decaying logs on your allotment (oyster mushrooms etc) and supermarket-mushroom's you can grow in a cellar. I've grown then successfully in the past and the best way to start is to order some mushroom spawn, theres loads of companies online that sell the kits for growing these kind of mushrooms. I've even grown oyster mushrooms on toilet rolls! Its a lot of fun watching them develop.

What kind do u want to grow?

Hi

I was thinking of Shiitake and oyster,

I've tried the kits, get the first 'flush' then everything just dies off.

Hi Truffle/Paul ;D Saw you on Telly in "The Dragons Den" How brave you were to face up to those Dragons and well done for winning over Simon Woodroffe, hope all goes well in your truffle business, good luck. ;)

I do hope that programme returns as I was addicted to it when I first discovered it. 8)

MikeB: Did you use the kits indoors or outdoors on logs? Both mushrooms fruit in the winter, so if they are outdoors on logs you just need to wait until jan/dec for a fruiting.

Roy: Thanks for your kind words, and theres another series this Autumn....i cant wait ;D

ellkebe: cheers!

I guess I'm just being impatient then.  O.K. I'll wait until Jan/Dec (on logs outside)
