Title: Serious question, no really!!
Post by: undercarriage plan on July 24, 2005, 18:27:59
I'm sure this must rate as one of the thickest questions so far, but is brocoli related to asparagus?   ??? Ate my first piece of lottie brocoli (Ooo that rhymes!) for tea, and it was so delicious, tasted just like asparagus, really strange.  Any ideas or is this the norm?  Lottie

But I've never tasted it like this!! And not blowing own trumpet or anything, all I did was plant seed, but it was so succulent, could eat it by the bucket full, and I don't like brocoli!!  ??? Lottie  ;D

Interestingly though (or perhaps not  ::)) the ability to smell it in your wee when you eat asparagus is genetic and only 40% of people can detect it.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

So if I have guessed your character correctly you're now going to be unable to stop yourself from finding out if your in the 40%  lolol  ;D

Serious answer to the original question. Asparagus is a member of the Lily family and Broccoli is a member of the Crucifer family, so no they are not related in any way.

because they taste so alike, I grow the white-stemmed asparagus, the subterranean variety. this does not taste like broccoli at all.

blight - something very common in germany but not at all in the UK
our local 'gourmet' market (borough market) had white asparagus the other day - all my OH's german work collegues went at lunchtime and bought armfuls of the stuff. did OH get some for me? nooooooo! ::)

svea,
serious case of "expatriot´s syndrome" obviously. they should have tried to get some seakale instead.
but I wonder if the stuff had been grown locally? as far as I know you don`t even need special varieties to do that:
earth it up -white asparagus with  white asparagus flavour;
just let it grow -green with broccoli flavour.

blight - i think it came from spain. never mind.
can't find it locally grown at all - too much work i reckon for the average britsh farmer. mind you, in germany the asparagus harvests are done by polish people i think ???

Post by: blight on July 24, 2005, 22:23:01
if it did come from spain - you certainly did not miss much. the white variety looses its charm even faster than the green stuff.
it should be eaten within a couple of hours after harvesting.
i.e. grow your own.
yes,  polish people pick it here. after the fall of the "iron curtain" the acreage for labour-intensive crops has rocketed here.there would not be any market gardining left if it was not for the east european immigration.the season starts  at the beginning of may and ends end of june. the asparagus is  picked twice a day. I pick my own - and  every second day only.  when the tips of the shoots hit daylight, they turn purple and get slightly bitter, which to my mind improves the flavour. and they look more dramatic - at least in their raw stage, as the  purple  colour turns a dark green when cooked.
because  whiteness and uniformity is required here - you might have guessed that much - purple headed asparagus is  much cheaper   to buy than its lilywhite brother. but you can only get them in hot spells, when  the pickers can´t keep up with the speed of growth.

So to summarise then:
- Brocolli not the same as asparagus just tastes that way
- Tim wasn't on about 'that' effect that Lottie won't tell us about
- Lottie didn't mean to upset anyone who weren't upset anyway
- white and green asparagus is the same, but different
- and everyone but a hubby buys it in germany but its from spain.

Hope thats clear now......... ;D ;D ;D    ;)

...another mucker abouter....

This is my first year and I was seduced by the glossy seed catalogue blurb and planted Asparagus Peas. Very pretty plant but the little seed pods don't taste anything like Asparagus, I'll stick to Brocolli stems in future ;D

That surprises me Dingerbell, as I thought they WERE supposed to taste like asparagus! I never been inclined to grow them, perhaps I never will now.

Addicted? not sure about that lottie! Mind you, nieces and nephews can never get enough of it. Isn't there a saying ' A broccoli a day keeps George Bush away'?

For those who buy veg from supermarket (horror! :o ) at extortionate prices (more horror!  :o :o ) i notice that Sainsbury's actually sell pre-packed and washed bags of broccoli stem offcuts now.

Errrrr!! Probably disinfected as well, just to be on the safe side!!  All my seeds for this year cost me about £25.00 for whole season, can't imagine how much I would have spent at supermarket in veg?  Lottie

Excluding potatoes, that was my seed bill for this year too.

;D I recently spent £9 in the Wilko sale that saved me £9 now I see they have knocked 75% off their remaining stock >:( still there wasn't much variety left :P so I'm nearly ready for next year. ;D

Being a diplomat Derek?   Mmmmmmmmm  sounds like a nice job.  What dya reckon Lottie  8)  ;)  No point being a ladder maker for I couldn't even find one to get me out of this little hole........

As for seeds I'm the worlds worst shopper which has me banned from the supermarket by wifey anyway lol   My seed buying tends be along the lines of "oh, there's some seeds, that looks nice,  think I'll try that".   Could be from the corner shop, Co-op Tesco, garage anywhere  ;D
