Not Dahlia, or cannabis in fact.

Lupin?

Ricinus communis also known as Castor Oil plant is often grown as a bedding out plant for its leaves which can be bright red. The seeds and the plant are poisonous, the source of Ricin which was used to assassinate a Bulgarian defector in London some time ago now. He was stabbed with an umberella tip smeared with the stuff.
Google images for a picture of the leaves of the plant.

:o I used to have a plant Ricinus communis Castor Oil Plant, Palma Christi very exotic looking leafy plant and it died on me shortly afterward, thankfully as I didn’t realize how toxic it was at the time. :o
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ricin and Terrorism

Ricin toxin is derived from Castor Bean Plant. Ricin is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. And now Arab terrorists have been captured with it in London. Ricin is a stable toxin easily made from the mash that remains after processing Castor beans (Ricinus communis) for oil. Castor Oil was once used as an oral laxative, but is now used mainly as an industrial lubricant and for preparing leather products. Castor beans are grown agriculturally worldwide and the plants grow wildly in arid parts of the United States. Castor beans are slightly larger than pinto beans, darkly colored with light mottling, and have a small light-brown cap at one end. They have been described as looking like blood-engorged ticks. The beans are not normally used as food. Poisoning can occur following inhalation, ingestion, or injection of ricin toxin from Castor beans.
Ricin is toxic by numerous exposure routes and its use by terrorists might involve poisoning of water or foodstuffs, inoculation via ricin-laced projectiles, or aerosolization of liquid ricin or distribution of a powder.

Didn't a Russian spy get pricked in the leg on London Bridge years ago with Ricin on the tip of an umbrella? That resulted in death :o ??? Lol you beat me to it Eric ;D

:) No, maybe not as you say, a bit peoni looking perhaps  ??? ???
Title: Re: Help!...Identification Needed!!
Post by: Palustris on June 07, 2005, 11:45:09
Not any paeony that I know of with those hairy stems, nor do I now think it is Ricinus, same reason. Cannot off hand either think of any potentilla with that feature either, but there are an awful lot of them. Leaves are not really dark enough nor 'leathery' looking enough to my mind for dahlias.

:) No quite right not paeony  ::) but how about chrysogonum golden star  ???  yellow flowers about 1 1/4" long. They have bright green hairy stems & leaves  about 8 - 12" tall & spread  ??? :) (http://nucite.net/isWext.php/3842/66238.jpg) This is not a good picture but any help  ??? ??? It is a semi evergreen perennial

Don't panic :o  I still say they are cleome.  From the second photo you can see the prickles beginning to form on the stems.  They are lovely flowers, but very thorny when fully grown.

Oh Mimi - so sorry to hear the seeds did not germinate, they are usually very easy to get going.  If you like, I will save you some more from this year.  I am eager to see whether I get the variation in colour that I got last year, or whether they will all  be white.  Let me know if you would like me to save you some and anyone else who wants some.  There are always plenty to go round :D  As I said before, they are a bit spiteful, but worth growing for their beauty I think.

Look forward to seeing your photos dibber :)
