Title: Alium (garlic) rust
Post by: Mrs Ava on June 04, 2005, 16:32:36
Another alium problem to join my white rot problem.  My garlics and leeks both suffer with rust, but it does seem to be more cosmetic.

Hope the pics are clear as I tried to zoom, but then lost the focus, then tried to sharpen them......oh well, you get the idea.

As you know I get it too EJ, though have to say the leeks I have just finished pulling up didn't have a trace which is odd, and so far this year my garlics are rust free..................... fingers, toes and everything else crossed too!

My mum planted cloves around her roses last autumn - when I was up there at the weekend, I saw that they had rust - pulled them up and the bulbs are quite a fair size. Might investigate my autumn planted garlic - looking better this year than 2 previous lots with only a touch of yellowing of the leaf tips.

Me too unfortunately. Not sure which variety. The rot seems to have more or less confined itself to Korean Red.

I'm in a similar position to Martha - my normal garlic is showing signs of rust, the elepnaht garlic isn't.

So, what do I do with the rust infected plants?  Can I still harvest and use the garlic or do I burn the lot?

just ignore it! Doesn't seem to affect bulbs. I've had it since I first grew the stuff (always certified bulbs) and it's only ever the leaves. I rotate, so if there are any spores in the soil, they can't build up too badly.
I tried to look at the RHS leek rust page, but they seem to have redesigned and it's gone walkies.

aha - HDRA to the rescue
