Title: Help, please
Post by: Sinbad7 on August 01, 2009, 11:59:08
Can anyone tell me what variety they think these are?

http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt54/Sinbad7/000_0046.jpg

I grew Desiree, Rooster's, Swift and Foremost this year but know they aren't any of these.

I thought maybe a Kind Edward but can't see me growing them.

They are a brilliant crop and went in early like all the seed potatoes but these are the only ones still flowering which make me think they are a late potato.  My Desiree and Rooster's haulms are dying off, so what could these be??

Many thanks for any suggestions,

Sinbad

They could be Picasso.  I grew them the year before last and they were brilliant croppers with good flavour too.

This might help http://www.thompson-morgan.com/potatoes1/product/zww5105/1.html

Possibly Cara.  What is the tuber like?  Picasso is yellow, waxy.  Cara is floury.

They look brilliant, thanks for the link.

I'm trying to think/remember if Picasso would attract me  ;D  ;D  A heavy cropper and stores well would, but I didn't think that's the one.  I wonder if they're Cara though, will go and have a look at them.

I could see myself growing Cara.

Brilliant, I'll settle for Cara.  I can see myself growing them.

Thank you both.

Ohhhhhhhh Noooooooooooooo.  I had my heart set on Cara  ;D  ;D  ;D

I could have grown Kestrel, they kind of ring a bell.

Better go and see if they store and keep for ages as I have them already in the hessian sack in the dark  ;D   ;D

Could have bought those, especially as they say they are slug resistant.

Kestrel are second earlies, aren't they and I thought the eyes were a bit more purple than pink?

I thought you were.  I was just about to type " you little fibber Marcus"   ;D  ;D  ;D

Just read this though so they aren't going to be good for storing at this stage.

The green leaves and stalks of potatoes, known as the haulm, will start to die down at the end of the season. The potato tubers will then stop growing and the skins start to set. It usually takes three weeks for the skins to become set, but it is worth digging one tuber up and checking
the state of the skin, before lifting. The potatoes should not be harvested for storage until the skins have set.

They are definitely not Kestrel, the spuds are larger and as said the eyes are larger and more purple. I've had a look on alanromans.com and they look like Cara, have a look on there Sinbad, there's plenty to choose from.   ;D ;D ;D

Thank you Cornykev, it's a great web page, reminded me of the varieties I have planted in containers for Christmas, had totally forgotten what they were  ;D  ;D

There's no hope for some and I am one of them but am a happy bunny tonight as I think now they have to be Cara.

Thanks for the photo's davyw.
