Title: Poorly hen
Post by: northener on January 29, 2006, 18:28:39
Hello. Just got back from lottie and one of the chickens was sort of stooping. When i had alook at her there is white fluid coming out of her vent and what looks like her insides. About the size of a golf ball. Any ideas. If shes still like it in the morning she'll have to go to the vets. :-[

Hi Northener - one of our chucks had this as well. She had a blocked crop - grain etc. getting stuck in her crop.

We made sure she had grit to help clear it and fed her bran which is easier to swallow. You can also clear it yourself by holding her upside down and VERY GENTLY massaging the lump. Lots of yakky gunk comes out so it's not for the squeamish but it does work!

Hope this helps

Here is a forum that can be useful by giving good advice about anything relating to poultry.

Practical Poultry forum is quite good with advice as well. Make sure she is kept somewhere warm if you can, hens can go downhill quickly if they get chilled and perhaps keep her away from the others to avoid spreading infection/virus if that is what she has.

How is she today northener?

I think shes eggbound after reading the above links [thanks]. I've had her soaking in warm soapy water for a good half hour. DRyed her off and put her in a guinea pig cage at side of radiator. I have to work now but hope to be back about 2 ish.

Just got back from vets afraid there was nothing they could do. Vet said she had prolapsed and because of the swelling they could'nt get the egg out. Vet put her to sleep.

Yeah i'm pleased i took her to the vets i can live myself. They could'nt give an explanation as to why it had happened. The only thing i can think of maybe's they need grit now they are not allowed to free range[bird flu]. Cheers for your thoughts life goes on.

Really sorry to hear about your girl.  They do need a constant supply of grit so if they haven't got any then get some asap. Having said that I can't imagine that was the cause of the problem she had.  Sometimes these things just happen :'( :'(
At least you know you did the best you could for her and she is at peace now.
