Title: Have you started your 2010 chilli season yet?
Post by: AdrianH on January 16, 2010, 17:41:45
Just wondered how many have already started off their chillis for the 2010 season.
I sowed my first batch on the 13th December:

African Bird Orange (4 germinated)
Black Pearl (3 germinated)
Fresno (4 germinated)
Habanero Long Red (3 germinated)
Wenks Yellow Hot (1 germinated)
Purple Tiger (5 germinated)
Ring of Fire (4 germinated)
Serrano (none germinated yet)
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia (none germinated yet)
Fatalli Yelloe (none germinated yet)

Last week I also sowed:
Cherry Bomb
Peach Habanero
Bermuda Hot

My overwintered Cherry Bomb and Hungarian Hot Wax both got a nasty bout of spider-mite so they've been composted but the overwintered Orange Scotch bonnet is doing OK and is mite free.

Also seeing if I can germinate some Peppadew seeds saved from a morrisons jar of peppadews.

Sweet peppers have also germinated:
Antohi Romana
Mavras F1 (A good purple bell pepper)
Golden Bell

So well on the way!

What have you all got on the go?

I couldn't resist a few.

Some Dorset Naga from Digeroo's seed swap and some Delhi pot chillis went in to the heated propagator last week and they all up - well 70% have germinated.
Always a thrill seeing the first green of the season. :D

I have a tepin, a chinese 5 colour and a early jalapeno overwintering and miraculously I haven't killed em.

Got a few more to go at the end of the month but cant remember the varieties..

Hi peeps, been off the board for a bit - did you miss me  ;D

I am hoping to get mine sown at the weekend in a heated propagator. I have some peppadews seeds (courtesy of tricia), some lemon drop chillis from real seeds and some cherry bombs that were very good last year, but didn't manage to overwinter any.

And once I get my new (freebie) greenhouse glazed I will be hoping to get a few more in.

Just some Jalapeno so far, Scotch Bonnet and Pimento to follow. Maybe Bolivian Rainbow again, although I found that I don't really use them, they just look good..  ::)

Hi, I'm new to this website. People's comments are very interesting though and I love the seed swapping as I always have loads extra....anyway I have just started 3 different types, 2 are hot and 1 is a regular pepper although I don't know the types off hand.
One question I did have is for anyone who has a conservatory and starts their plants off in there. I don't have a greenhouse but my conservatory is south facing. It is cold at the end of the day and overnight when we turn the heater off but warm the rest of the day. Will any seedlings survive in here? What things have people grown in conservatories? Thanks!  :)

Is it ok to put them out in an unheated greenhouse yet?
As I am going to run out of space pretty quickly!
I am down south and could manage to run a small parafin heater at night.

I've put them in the greenhouse tonight with the heater, I will report back tomorrow.

Another one who just had to get started with some seed sowing.  Started last week on a sunny window cill -
Hot Thai
Gelbe Kirshen - Early Yellow Cherry Chilli
Iranian Round
Nigel's Outdoor Green Chilli
Pretty In Purple
Wenk's Yellow Hots
Lemon Drop

The Hot Thai that I overwintered indoors is frankly looking miserable - and my neglect of said plant is testament to how awful it looks  :-X

And welcome to A4A superfowell  - sorry I don't have a greenhouse etc so can't help you out on your question - hopefully someone will be along shortly.....  :D

Superfowell, my chilli seedlings have been in my outdoor unheated greenhouse (down south) since I did that last post, they haven't died. I've got a very small paraffin heater to keep the frost at bay.
Your chillies will be ok, keep them near to the house wall rather than by the windows at night.
I doubt that it would get below freezing at night anyway.

Then they are nice and compact..

I have Bulgarian Carrot just germed,  Dorset Naga going well and two types of Indian hot going pretty well as well as some over wintered varieties..
My Spanish Numex have completely failed - none of 6 have germed.. ???

Hi to all on A4A - Cheers from Oz. I hope you don't mind me sitting in, as your season is the reverse of mine and there's not going to be much action here for the next 6 months. Not to be out done, I have sowed 32 varieties of Chillies and Peppers and will carry them through our Winter, all being well.

Hello and welcome to A4A No-lottie, nice of you to join in. What sort of weather do you get during winter? Not enough available daylight is a problem here.
Title: Re: Have you started your 2010 chilli season yet?
Post by: no-lottie on March 06, 2010, 09:03:02
Thanks Jayb - It ranges from about 10-14C here, with a bit of fluctuation during the day, often with low overnight temperatures 0-4C. Daylight hours are a lot longer than what you get there and I usually manage Carrots, Parsnip, Swede and Garlic during the cooler months, with good success rate.
I'm a bit of a fancier of tomatoes and chillies, although don't eat them much.

Oooer I'd swap for those temperatures  ;D Bet you get a summer too  ;D
Yes Chillie and tomato obsesed too, and love eating both (trying some Polish Pastel and Grub's Mystery Green this year which I think are from over your way)
Love your avatar, they look very tasty indeed.

Our Summer this year was much better than last year, when we had our bad bushfires here (48C one day - a really hard day to do anything at all).

I'm sure you'll love Grub's Mystery Green, a very nice tomato sliced on a sandwich, one I do like very much.

The Cappia's shown in my avatar are a sweet pepper and very nice eating.

Title: Re: Have you started your 2010 chilli season yet?

I'll keep one of most varieties and grow next season for eating if I can handle them and sell the rest in Spring. I do use them for seed saving even if I don't like them.

We actually didn't get the deluge that hit Melbourne, but we did get a bit of welcome rain from it.

not that i am jealous or anything  :P

I sowed mine in a heated propagator last Sat. None are showing yet.

We are going for a few tried and tested favourites and some new varieties. Praire Fire and Ring O Fire have always done well for us and produced a good crop for general use. Hot pepper 'purple' is such a pretty plant that it is on the list again. These tiny dark purple peppers have a real kick, but the folliage is a nice deep colour. Hot 'patio sizzle' were on offer at Wilkos and they look very similar to praire fire so they have promise. In addition, we are trying 'chenzo' and 'cheyenne' which caught my eye when searching online.

 ;D ;D

Hi and welcome.

I will have a go with a saved shop chilli, a "de Cayenne" and a sweet pepper and see what happens.

Barkie - If you want to save seeds from chillies/peppers you will have to isolate the plants from each other because they are very promiscuous! Plants from saved seeds will only come true if they haven't been cross-pollinated, though sometimes you can end up with something really interesting.
