Title: Seed Sharing Circle 2013
Post by: Jayb on February 11, 2013, 16:16:56
Any one up for joining another Seed Circle?  :blob7:

If this is all new to you here's a brief guide; add your name to the thread and when you know what you will be growing and saving for the circle. The Seed Circle is open to all A4A members new and ‘long termers’. Each member of the group chooses 2 or more heritage or open pollinated vegetables of their choice to grow for seed for the group (if possible varieties new to the circle, and not bog standard ones). You then grow and harvest enough seeds for all the members of the group. Remember some vegetables are easier than others to grow for seed, Real Seeds gives some great information, http://www.realseeds.co.uk/seedsavinginfo.html

Updates from everyone are great on the thread to keep a track of who’s growing what and how the season is going. Once your seeds are ripe you can harvest them and dry well, they can then be divided into individual portions and packaged ready to be sent to me at the end of the season. As the seeds come in here they are added to everyone's individual collections before being sent out to members in their Seed Circle parcel. Enjoy!

If you want to see how we got on the last year take a look here

This is the bestest Circle so I can't really resist.

We will be growing all sorts of strange and beautiful things on the new community garden so should have loads to share later in the year. All being well. *Shakes fist at sky.

Definitely, though I've no idea what I'll be saving. I haven't got as far as deciding what to plant, and it all depends on what actually produces seed. I was scraping about last year - I suspect others did the same - and I wouldn't dare try to predict!

Your post got me thinking and looking through seed packets. I was wondering amongst other things about Yu Choy Sum - Red Stem as a possibility? Anyone grown it?

Yes please

Initial plans for the circle:  Lettuce Mescher (thankyou GL) have sprouted.  This is the first batch and will go in the greenhouse, a second batch for outdoor seed production will be sown later.

Just a little bit exotic, but actually very easy to grow, I am planning Melothria scabra, aka mouse melon or Mexican Sour gherkin.  They are not really 'sour' but a refreshing 'one-bite' cucumber-ish snack.  They pickle well, go in any salad and look exactly like miniature watermelons of the long type.

I got a few really different French Climbing beans from Austria and USA - hope one or two 'transplant' well to our climate.  Need to produce fresh seeds for herb 'Salad Burnet', if that produces sufficient it could go into the circle - nice faintly  cucumber tasting herb that is delish in sandwiches, especially the new shoots.

All vague plans at the moment and will need to see what works out in the end.  Also intend doing a HSL variety of carrots, but these will produce seeds next year all being well.  Same with a turnip variety that needs to be grown out to seed again - very long-term plans.

Thank you for organising another one Jayb.   :icon_cheers:

Jayb sent me some white maize seeds to grow for circle...so that is one crop that I know 'I do'...fingers crossed for the good results.
Another 'maybe' is hangdown broad bean. I got these from Finland..I don't know much about them and been doing some reseach and although there is variety call Hangdown green, it is not same. Nordic seed bank does list one broadbean variety called Hangdown..but they don't know neither the origin of the cultivar. BUT..never mind the history...I'm not that keen broadbean eater, but this variety did impress me last summer with taste.. :icon_cheers: Again....fingers crossed for good year. I'm about to to sow the broadbeans in a next couple of weeks time  :icon_cheers:
As for anything else....well...time will tell what goodies I come up with and how they grow. I've got some suppliers to come from Sweden too, perharps there is something for circle too.. :icon_cheers:

I would like to participate too. I don't have really rare seeds to sow but have enough moderately unusual ones that might be welcome to some people. I had hoped to take part last year but calculated that I'd need about 60 spare seeds for a package and though I had spare seeds for my own purposes, I didn't have that amount. This year I can grow deliberately for sharing.

Welcome aboard Toshofthe Wuffingas, so nice to have new to the group members. Any questions ask away (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-basic/bye.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

Hey Ruud, welcome, I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering what to grow  :happy7:

Those were some of the lovely seeds from Jeannine, thank you for taking them on and yes fingers crossed.

Love broad beans, one of my fave's. I like the sound of your hangdown beans, look forward to hearing more. I'm trying some Aztec Yellow broad beans this year, I'm not sure how productive they will be though!

Any seed is worth of swap. It is all about growing, saving and sharing. What ever variety you think is good to eat and/or produce well is what counts. Of course we all love to try something unusual or with some interesting history behind it, but we all grow many 'basics' too.
You've got plenty of time to decide what to grow.. and plenty of time to change you mind what to send for the circle. Perharps starting your planning with type of crop that you are already comfortable of growing and another which may push your comfort zone (little learning curve there).
Ohhh...its going to be good fun again.. :icon_cheers:

Hi I would like to join if you will have me.  However I had a bit of a disaster with several climbing beans last year and lost some of my breeding stock.

I had some great leeks which were the only ones on our entire site to survive the ravages of all the bugs but the seed turned out not to be viable.

Anyway hoping for a better year.  I do have some seeds from a giant butternut squash.  It will be interested to see if it grows ok in our clime.

Figs!

I have a fig tree I planted here years ago.
It figs and figs and figs!
I know they have seeds in them, I've eaten enough.
Does anyone know if the seeds will be viable if I let them ripen fully..?  Oh I hope so..... That would be cool...

Hello everyone. I'm back after 4 weeks levada walking and soaking sunshine in Madeira to find a surprise pack from Jayb and the circle. Thankyou everyone who has contributed such wonderful goodies, I was quite overcome [sniff, sniff]. You are so kind.
I do save seed for my own use but am always  a bit nervous that my squashes and stuff will have interbred so haven't been courageous enough to send seed out. This year I shall plant with a bit of tight control and at least I know some things are pretty safe to send like peas and beans. When I've tackled the mail, the bills and the washing, the propagators out and I shall set too. I've still got to thresh my 2 big leek heads [ Bleu de solaise] so if anyone would like some pm me.

I don't know much about figs, I've only ever propagated them by cuttings. I did have a quick search http://www.ehow.com/way_5452523_growing-fig-trees-seed.html

Hello all,
After an awful 2012, I'd like to try again this year, if you'll have me, that is!

This year I'll be trying out some short season Russian tomato varieties and, I hope, some peas and beans.
It feels as though spring is just around the corner!  :happy7:

Biskopens Graaert would be fab - rare red seeded pea.  How do you overwinter the celeriac?  I will have the problem next year as I am planning carrots.  Turnips are usually ok with cloche and fleece on top, but carrots need a bit more protection here.  Have lost too many last time I tried and need to research overwintering methods.  Any hints?

PL are the seeds turning black yet?  Have you opened another fruit?  I have just opened  a seedless fruit of a handpollinated courgette - stored fine regardless! - fingers crossed for the other one that I haven't touched yet.  This hasn't been a good year for squashes as RB said.

Celeriac has overwintered fine for me just left in the ground, but some folk lift them and store them indoors in spent compost. Lifting has the advantage of giving a good chance to inspect and select the best roots. I'm going to pick  6 or 7 roots, and transplant them to a new bed with posts to support the seed heads. This is exactly as I have done before with parsnips.

Yes I would like to join the circle again please!!

Not sure what I shall do this time round, but was thinking about shallots

Have googled & would like to grow some eschalot grise.

A khaki coloured shallot originating in Kazakhstan, and rarely seen in Britain. This gourmet Shallot ‘Eschalote Grise’ is prized in French cuisine for its intense and concentrated flavour. Pack size: Approx. 500g. Approx. 20 sets. Height 35cm (14”). Spread: 15cm (6”).

Although it originates in Kazakhstan I don't know whether it is heirloom or heritage (or not )

Does anyone know ??

Welcome Paulie and welcome back Deb
bought some echalote gris from the Vegetable society at Hampshire potato day.  First year they were soso, but last year they excelled (used to our climate and soil better in second year).  Wouldn't call them khaki as such but a bit darker than others.  So yes, nice addition and they keep for a very long time, so should still be in very good condition when it is seed envelope time.

Pepper is new to me.

After having to drop out last year after a number of disasters, I've been hesitant to join, but just can't resist, so can I be on the list too please? I have a new plot on a new site, so all looks good  :sunny:
In the hope that this year will be a good one for squash, I will be growing a few different varieties, also lots of yellow courgettes (yes, they are my favourites) so will try to hand pollinate a couple of the fruit. Failing that, I will fall back on my tomatoes, or possibly peas...but for now, lets say it will be squash of some sort  :toothy10:

Any passing Garden Organic members could do worse than look in the new issue of The Organic Way, where our own aj  mentions the pleasures and benefits of taking part in a seed circle.

It all made a very interesting read! :happy7:

I would like to join please, if there is a space left.
I brought some seeds back from Japan last year when I visited my family. I'm hoping to save seeds of varieties that are difficult to get in the UK. It's hard to say which ones I can offer to the circle but I'm thinking black seeded soya beans and bicoloured perilla at the moment. I had good crops with these two last season; black soya beans gave me a good crop (I'd tried T&M soya beans  many times in the past with no germination) and the bicoloured perilla turned out to be really easy and the most fragrant type I've ever grown. Hopefully I can harvest seeds of a few more varieties too.

I think mine might be purple tomatillos but I've never grown them before....I've finally agreed/been offered back surgery so that might just cramp my style a bit. But hopefully something will obligingly bolt on me.- Even the rhubarb is trying to do so at the moment. Its under a compost bin... :drunken_smilie:

With shaking hands and all possible digits crossed I write that I am hoping to grow for this years seed circle-
Climbing french -Jack Edwards and Bridgwater also lablab Yings.
I have never grown lablab and there are warnings that the beans themselves are toxic unless well cooked. Theres lots of talk about it being  a useful forage plant for deer (that is good to know!) however it is also used like a mange tout but needs to be kept in warmer so greenhouse/ tunnel needed. So that sounds a useful and practical thing to grow if the weather is anything like last few years!
I chopped up a Shark's fin (small one) last night but the seeds were not mature, so I am going to leave the bigger ones until later until I chop another. So hopefully there will be some viable seeds in one which can go in this years circle, and to anyone who was in last years, but not this please let me know and I will send some out to you.
So there is a start- I have a plan. Maybe there will be more as well :icon_cheers:

I'm hoping to have several varieties of umbellate peas, and other peas and beans, but if we get another season like the last that may yet go wrong again. I don't know what else there's likely to be; it depends entirely on how things go.

Have added some 'how to save seeds' information to our 2013 Seed Sharing Circle blog page:
https://sites.google.com/site/seedsharingcircle/seed-parcel/seed-parcel-2013

Please let me know about other online seedsaving ressources that should go there and also if any of the links don't work.

And if there are any outstanding seedsaving questions, please do ask.  Somebody will know the answer.  Or can look it up for you.

The best seedsaving book for UK conditions is Sue Stickland's ' Back Garden Seed Saving: Keeping Our Vegetable Heritage Alive'

In the USA/worldwide the most highly rated book is: Suzanne Ashworth's 'Seed to Seed'

I sowed some last year but I suspect the seed was old. I'll try again this year. I usually try akashiso for the colour.

Welcome aboard Tora, steveg1966 and gunnerbee

It's different from a straight seed swap in everyone chooses 2 or more heritage or open pollinated vegetables/fruit/edible herb/flower etc of their choice. Over the season grow your chosen varieties and produce enough seed to share with everyone in the group. eg 5-20 tomato seeds, 10 beans or peas etc per person. The idea is to keep the varieties interesting, not much point in sharing Gardner's Delight as they are readily available and most folk already have a packet or two.

It's great to get updates from everyone on this thread as the season progresses, fun to hear how crops are doing and keep a track of what we can look forward to. Feel free to post pictures and ask any questions you may have.

Once your seeds have ripened and are dry, they can be divided up between the members of the group, some use little plastic zippy bags, or make their own paper ones etc. Seed are then sent to me and once they are all collected in I divide the bags between everyone and send your collection back. We have a Seed Sharing document  https://sites.google.com/site/seedsharingcircle/  where you can add your descriptions on what your sharing, photos are great too so everyone knows what they will be growing, also helps with identifying any off types.

Green Zebra, bred by Tom Wagner, is 40 years old this year. I was lucky enough to get some 'breeder's seed' directly from Tom last season which I'm going to be growing. I'm not sure if or how different regular Green Zebra may have become away from it's source over the 40 years? But I like Green Zebra, it's a good tomato and I think these will be a nice one to share with others.

Considerably different - we talked about this on another group in 2001, and Tom Wagner said then that at that time the Green Zebra variations were already tremendous.  And that he could see distinct 'genetic drift' in only 5 generations in his own location.  Considering he made this statement about tomatoes in his own location, the genetic drift of all the Green Zebras in all the different places where this enigmatic tomato has been grown, is substantial.  I got seeds from 3 different sources (one was a freebie in an Australian gardening magazine) and the other two from the USA.  One of the US seeds has much higher yield and the Australian one has better flavour.  To look at they are all undoubtedly Green Zebra, but with individual genetic drift.  We have a local example for this genetic drift - Gardener's Delight tomato - has been saved and 'reselected' by seed companies so many times, it is difficult to know which is the original, or closest to the original.  RealSeeds have been offering two different strains.

Hence the recent breeder's selection to give us back Tom's idea of what Green Zebra should look and taste like.  I look forward to your reports and seeds.

I've got now 36 square meter bed sorted for coming maize seed plants :icon_cheers: Only one side of it is 'open' and facing next doors plot..and they don't grow any corn at all..behind their plot has THICK 10 foot hedge..and other 2 sides has high hedges too and one side will have row on climbing bean..bed is getting almost all day sun (that's if the sun will shine this summer) and is bit of a 'sun trap'..gets really warm being so sheltered.
Plan is that I'm going to hand pollinate number of plants to keep variety 'clean' and let other plants to pollinate themselves..they should not get cross pollinated anyway as none of my immediate neighbours do grow corn and each plot is behind hedging, and then there is trees, greenhouses etc if there should be some sweetcorn growers on the site, from past years experience, I know we don't have many and not near me  :icon_cheers:
Broadbean plants were planted yesterday and I'm going to set some seed straight into ground as well..to make sure we've got plenty :icon_cheers:
Another couple of weeks and I'll sow the corn :icon_thumleft:

The celeriac roots were eaten by rabbits over the winter, so they are a no no, but I've left some of the best  Cheltenham Greentop beetroot for seed, and parsnips are already flowering. Biskopens Graaert peas are poking their red stems out of their root trainers ready to be transplanted soon. I'll try for a few other things too. Perhaps Huauzontle if it does well.

Great news on both!

Here lettuce Mescher is looking good, one batch in the greenhouse to guarantee seeds even if we get a horrid summer, two batches outside (I prefer to harvest seed from lettuce outside if possible).

Have put a picture on the 2013 seed circle website of a young Mescher lettuce.  In the greenhouse they are almost green, outside they are much redder - interesting.

As my broadbeans were started early in GH..they are well ahead other allotments broadbeans so no cross pollination issues :icon_cheers:
I've been around plots and checked the flowering situation and I can safely save seeds from all the first and second 'layers' of pods :icon_cheers:
Peas are growing strongly but still long way from flowering.
Tomatoes are all 'in' and looking better than they ever did last summer...so I'm very hopeful for few seeds from some of them.

Hi Clumsy, welcome to the forum

Group is full for this year. It may not seem like many but I think it would start to become a chore and difficult for folk to produce seed if the group were bigger. It's likely we will be starting a new group at the beginning of 2014 for anyone interested. But if you are planning on saving seed this year there is the seed swap section http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php/board,10.0.html
where you could list them and what you are looking for in exchange.

If it makes you feel any better...same happened here with some of my squashes :BangHead: Found a snail in GH. It was good thing that I thought to check the GH's last night ..and what did I see..this huge single snail happily 'sitting' on top of my seedlings, already left a trail of eaten stumps. It it would had a chance to carry on all night, there wouldn't been single one left to grow.
Now I've only suffered loss of one variety :BangHead:..which I'm going to re-sow today.

Thanks for the sympathy goodlife :angel11:

After all the wet, it isn't surprising.  I remove them from the greenhouse almost daily there are so many.  Time for a torchlit nighttime raid as there are still some that I missed somewhere.  Does compost routinely come with slug and snail eggs in it????????????????   :tongue3:  or do they just crawl in????????

Next time I will bottle cloche Melothria inside the greenhouse, if it isn't too hot when the next batch get to that size, and/or put a ring of crushed eggshells around them.

Sorry you lost a variety too.  Perils of a rainy late spring  :BangHead:

The celeriac roots were eaten by rabbits over the winter, so they are a no no, but I've left some of the best  Cheltenham Greentop beetroot for seed, .

Sorry about your celeriac, Ian.  I had beetroots eaten in storage by mice.  Seems like it is tricky to store crops over winter and it is tricky to leave them in the soil.

These biennial crops are quite difficult.  Does anybody know whether clamps work any better?  I would not know how to do a clamp here though, as our garden was under water for most of winter and I lost so many plants as a result. In the surrounding area there are still some shallow lakes that haven't dried out yet.

How do others store biennials without mishap?

Looking forward to the turnips.  Hope all goes well.  What is Huauzontle and how do you use it?

I've left some turnips to over winter in the ground...and they survived....but that was just pure luck with weather that year.
I'm not sure if any of mine would survive in clamp otherwise..I'm sure if I were to make effort and do some fancy storage 'thingies'..surely all manner of rodents would get interested of them.
Other than that I have some metal dustbins with metal lids...those lined with straw and roots layered there and the bin kept in shed have worked well for all manner of things...potatoes too. Hmm..must remember buy another bin..lots of possible roots crops to save for seeds and for eating..

Metal bin in the garage , with metal lid, that could work.  Must see what I can find.  Thanks GL :-)

Only trouble with having lid on bin is that conditions can get quite damp inside..but once I started to use dry straw..the straw keeps the excess humidity soaked up...and occasionally I leave lid undone while I'm pottering about and shut it all back up again later.

Has anyone sown broad beans this late? I just received some interesting Spanish varieties, and I'm tempted to plant one. The late start would isolate it and hopefully get true seed.

Huauzontle  or Aztec Broccoli, sorry I can't help much as it's my first time growing it, it's a little small as yet. I had my seeds from Real Seeds the description sounds good http://www.realseeds.co.uk/cookinggreens.html

I've not used clamps either, I think it is too wet here. Similarly mice seem in abundance and can be troublesome. I'm not sure which way will be best yet? I'm growing Early Blood beetroots which ideally I'd like to save the best for seed as they are a lovely beetroot which does well here and seed is not easy to come by. I'd also very much like to overwinter some Gilfeather Turnip (Swede) for seed next year. John M was so kind to share some seed with us, I'd like to keep it going for more people to try growing them. Again not an easy variety to source.

I grew some last year..for a moment :BangHead: As soon as I planted my plugs..slugs/snails had them, just like they had almost everything else. So cannot say if they are nice or not..easy to germinate for sure.

I'm also hoping to store some carrots for next year..got hold of some old Finnish carrot seeds that were grown for two purposes..for fodder and for human consumption as they are sweet enough..apparantely they do grow big and are whitish coloured...but until I see them actually growing and tasted some can't  be sure of anything. I was going to give in and just send in the Shark's fin seeds to distribute but not be a "reciever" I cannot bear the thought of providing minimal or not very interesting stuff whilst being on the recieving end of some fantastic and interesting seeds.
Anyway I have a few things that might be interesting and actually grow! however I am NOT going to say what they are- might as well just spray them with round-up!!

Hello everyone, hoping this finds us all well.
Just reporting really that things are a few weeks behind, but I'm seeing progress at last in some of our Russian tomatoes: Yabloki Na Snegu (Apples in Snow) and Sibirsky Skorospeliy (Siberian Early), both bush plants, and hopefully Leningradskiy Skorospeliy (Leningrad Early) not too far behind; plus the mini-orange peppers are enjoying the current hot spell here in Leeds, like the rest of us.  :sunny:

I've got loads of peas flowering. As long as the pigeons don't get to them, there should be plenty of seed. Beans are well behind but looking promising, and a row of rat's tail radish is growing like mad. I've got some Lux de Otono broad beans which are supposed to give a November crop if they're planted now and there's a mild autumn. I'm going to try them anyway,

Those tomato varieties sound great, looking forward to growing them next year. I've grown a few more bush varieties this year, earliest so far are Betime Macbeth (from last year's seed circle) cropping well, a home bred stipey one, and this morning I noticed a Latah just starting to turn colour.

Oowwha Robert, yum to peas. I can't wait to hear what crops well and will be added to the parcel  :toothy10: Good luck with the broadies, sounds a very useful sort, fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed!  Unfortunately bean seeds can rot very fast if they are only the slightest bit overwatered.  Hope your other (secret) plants are doing well.

I was chancing my luck putting up a picture of the lettuce Mescher on the blog page, but the greenhouse plants are starting to shoot up a flower stalk and the outside plants are really showing what the variety can do.  I don't agree with the HSL description that this is a Cos lettuce.  Been to the 'Arche Noah' webpage (Austrian HSL equivalent) and they say that it is a butterhead or Bibb lettuce, as they call it.  I would agree with that.

We have some replacement Mexican Sour Gherkin plants.  But they are still very small and vulnerable to slugs.  Fingers crossed there ............

Had the first bean plants bitten off by voles/mice or whoever does this.  Fingers crossed so far none of the new types.  :BangHead:

They do have a feint pineapple taste ,quite juicy .A few plants last year have turned into hundreds all covered in fruit , slugs and birds stay away. They are possibly style over substance but for no effort  you get a lot of fruit and they do look lovely , I made some lavender meringues in colour too, and strewn with the pineberries looked very pretty . Commercially I would imagine they are a non starter only seen them in Waitrose but they do have a place on the plot or even better in my tum!

WHAAAT! Shoulder height already!...you must be 4 ft 'tall' then  :tongue3: Cherokee white that I'm growing has been slow the get going as we had so cool night temps earlier on the summer...but last few weeks they have finally taken off  :icon_cheers: They are no where as tall as yours yet..only about 2 ft but they do look VERY healthy and the stems are really thick (good sign for some potential vigour) and the side 'shoots' are almost as tall as the leader and there is lots of them..quite bushy plants  :icon_cheers:
At the moment I'm 'force feeding' and watering my corn to get it bulk up quickly and hopefully they are willing to tassle up more readily too. I know corn growth is 'on timer' and they do what they are 'programmed' to do...but, one can only live in hope and do one's best in case it there is chance to influence the growth :glasses9: Lets hope we get looooong and warm autumn to get the corn ripen up.
Hangdown broadbeans are doing GREAT :icon_cheers: LOADS and LOADS of pods have set and now I'm just waiting them to mature for seed harversting...been eating quite a lot too and still there is more than I can cope with :icon_cheers:
I've got some lettuces that are just starting to go to seed...I didn't originally list those up as possibilities for seedsaving..but I have been living in hope that they would make it this year..so fingers crossed for success.
OH..PEAS...LOADS of them..and again..didn't promise earlier on any...but they have done well and some will find into circle too :icon_cheers:
That's for the update so far...
Oh..not yet...edit to add...some tomato seeds may end up into parcel too...last year being disaster for my toms and I was planning then to include some varieties but there was no luck. I was left with only few seeds for this year and luckily I have some healthy plants with some healthy and plump tomatoes hanging on :icon_cheers: I will save some tomato seeds this year as well  :icon_cheers:

Wow Goodlife! How I'd like a bed of corn like that..
The allotment has proved, sadly, really not good for corn, (Rabbits and very strong winds), but I always plant some in the garden (Its the riebel maize this year), and its catching up! Not six foot yet, but big and strong it certainly is!

I'm getting pea seeds harvested. The broadies have done well, but they're all hybridised and I don't know what they'll turn into so I won't include the mix this year. The day length neutral ones are up and if they produce a crop I'll put those in. Rat tailed radishes are five feet high and flopping all over everything.

I know this may be controversial, but what about Goji Berry?
I have a Young Goji that is producing berries right along its branches. I'll get pics. I know the only other one on the site is the same, as this one is a direct cutting.
I wonder if anyone knows if its fertility will pass on? Or will it produce seeds of an inferior type d'ya think?

WELL DONE for get getting some goji berries...I never managed that and plants were eaten down by slugs and snails.

Good luck.  9ft that's very tall!!!

Here fermenting the first tomato seeds for the circle.  A yellow cherry tomato called 'Ester Hess Yellow Cherry'.  Tomato 'Brown Berry' to come soon for the health conscious chocoholics amongst us.  Ok, they do not taste like chocolate, but a very flavourful cherry tomato all the same.  Collecting Mescher lettuce seeds which have started to form.  The herb 'Salad Burnett' will have to wait probably for next year as it shows no signs of flowering yet.  More vole damage to beans.    :BangHead:  They nibble through the base of plants which are already up the beanstick and have started 'beaning'.  In desperation I am trying to root cuttings of what is left of the rarer varieties.  :BangHead:   But I should manage a pea variety for the circle.  Think I have enough of 'Norli' a very early Swiss mangetout pea and very high yielding.

Handpollinating pattison courgettes too, but how much seed I will get and whether it is enough for the circle? - we will have to see.  Fingers crossed.  It is a bit warmer than last year, so hopefully I won't end up with all seedless squashes again.   :BangHead:

Hi Steve

If you have a look the page 1..you can see what this circle is all about...it is not swap as such. At the beginning of the year we all 'sign in' to the circle..we grow the crops that are purposely grown for that reason and end of the year, each person from the circle get some of each others seeds.
Perharps you like to join again in few month time when it is time to start planning for next year?.. :toothy10:

Oh..pumpkins are getting huge...and looks like there is going to be bumper crop of seeds there.. :icon_cheers:

I've just started podding my broadies today. Not for swapping; I haven't saved that many, and they're all F1's or F2's from my own mix, so  don't know what they'll turn into next year. Peas are coming in fine despite a bit of a disaster when some wigwams toppled, just when my back was really bad and I couldn't do anything about it. Result was the seed got mixed, and there isn't much of some varieties. Never mind, at least I haven't lost any!

Oh, don't give up yet Debs!  Do you have any non F1 tomatoes growing?  Or any beans?  Are any of your lettuces bolting? Maybe your peas are still producing?  There is still time to switch to another crop or two.  Good luck!

I wanted to contribute seeds of herb Salad Burnett.  Can't do that either this year, because none of them are flowering yet.   :BangHead:  So that will have to wait.  One the other hand, the second sowing of Mexican Sour Gherkin/Mouse Melon/melothria scabra now has tiny little fruits on the plants.  :happy7:  Fingers crossed there.  Peas for the circle are done and beans are in progress.  As every year I have hand pollinated squashes and we will see whether it is a good seed year with enough seeds for everybody or few seeds only, just enough to carry on.  Last year was seedless, great shame because I could not take any seeds of Jeannine's rare squashes.  But the weather this year is much warmer, so there should be some at least.  Handpollinating Todo el Ano (with a tilde over the n) and still hoping that one year I will have enough for the circle.  Also Striped Custard Marrow, a pattypan type courgette, which is shaped a bit like a tulip flower with scalloped edges.  The stripes are only visible when the fruit is very mature.  At the normal eating stage, it is just very pale green.  3 handpollinated fruits so far, but they are low down on the plants and at risk from slugs, mice and voles.  Fingers crossed.  Collecting Mescher lettuce seeds daily too.  Seeds for cherry tomato Ester Hess is fermented and dried for the circle, just needs putting into packets.

Your corn sounds just fab, goodlife!  There is a crop that needs a big commitment!  Thank you for doing this for us (and Jayb!).

Great  they are just such a handsome seed, when I sowed them I took great care  to which they did not respond so I took the pots out of the greenhouse (unheated) stuck them out in the cold over winter  and next spring up they popped , they are very hardy and have a strong tap root .

Hi all this post is interesting I see you have alot of interesting seeds I wouldn't mind some but I don't realy have any rare ones to offer. I have got some pumpkins that I will be harvesting in a month or two and they are doing realy great so I think I should have a good batch of seeds.  Other than that I don't have alot to contribute :(
Hi Tashsteve, thanks for the interest in the circle, pretty much as Goodlife said, it would be better to join in and start a new group at the beginning of 2014. But I'd be happy to send you a selection of seeds for you to grow next year, pm me if you would like some

Hi Nigel, I couldn't get your picture to open, not sure if it's me having a numpty moment!
Know how you feel Goodlife, the Glass Gem Corn was soooo much taller than I imagined! Although they are not ready for seed I picked one yesterday, I couldn't wait any longer to see what they looked like! Not quite like the pictures on the net, seeds are small compared to sweet corn, but pretty none the less and hopefully they will pop once dried.

I managed to locate and have grown Monstrance bean this year, as the ones shared previously in the group failed to germinate for me. I thought they were going to be a dwarf bean, my mistake, a climber with white flowers. They are a little late, but I'm hoping they will ripen enough beans to include in the circle. Whilst having a google I came across a thread on another forum and it appears these may be the same as Red Eye Greasy beans, although really it is not a greasy been but a fall bean! Anyway I've also some Red Eye Greasy beans growing and they do appear very similar. Red Eyes came from Remy, her site now has updated information http://www.sampleseeds.com/?page_id=3725

Getting ready to bag up! The red field peas 'Biskopens Graaert are dried and there is enough for a generous bag for everyone. I'm also providing parsnip, salsify, and Cheltenham Greentop beetroot.
I know the parcel from a couple of years ago included Painted Mountain corn(who sent it?) but membership changes, and seed gets old, so if it's wanted, I've collected lots and can add it to the parcel.
I might also be able to collect skirret too. It's not ripe yet, and the weather will have to behave.

Ohhhh....its getting quite exciting now...all those 'little' seeds drying out all over the country and getting ready for their new homes.. :icon_cheers:
I still got quite few 'bits and bobs' to dry out...some are still on plants and won't be ready until last moment and others dried and ready for bagging to portions.
Jayb...your corn is very pretty..though much darker than in 'advertized'..you can still see from your photo the 'glassness' as the seeds are not 'solid coloured. Looooovely...looking forward for those.. :icon_cheers:

Well...I look forward for everything/anything.. :drunken_smilie:
Ian...for list of 'stuff' you have to come..sounds like its been good year for you..pst, Painted mountain corn was from Jayb.

How I sympathise as I'm playing the waiting game with my tomato plants and have brought most of them inside to benefit from the warmth, although the first batch of Yabloki Na Snegu seeds are fermenting in the kitchen.    :clock:

Choy Sum Red Stem - Brassica rapa – chinensis
and
Ethiopian Kale/Highland Kale - Brassica carinata
harvested, seed dried and winnowed. Just a note - some of the Highland Kale plants were slightly different from one another in leaf colour (slightly red) otherwise they seemed the same.

In addition to Mescher and Ester Hess, Melothria Scabra is fruiting nicely.  Will wait to the last moment before harvesting and seed drying for best seed maturity.

I have isolated/handpollinated 3 fruits of 'Striped Custard Marrow' a tulip flower shaped courgette, which is white as a young fruit but later develops green stripes as a sign of maturity.  2 are fully mature and have been taken in to 'cure' and mature the seeds further in the warmth of the conservatory, 1 has only just started on the green stripes outdoors and probably won't be ready in time for the seed circle.  As usual, the seed count with squashes is very variable, but I hope that these two fruits will at least give everybody a couple of seeds.  Fingers crossed - I am not cutting them open yet, to allow the seeds to ripen further post harvest.  Last year just about all squashes were seedless due to the weather  :sad10:

I have harvested Mr Yeoman's White seeded Cherokee Trail of Tear beans, a white seeded mutation of the more common black ones.

I think I have enough of Grandma Nellie's Yellow Mushroom beans, which are climbing and Black Valentine which are dwarf.  Will know when final numbers are out.

At least one pea variety - from memory I have enough for everybody of 'Norli' a very early dwarf mangetout variety from Switzerland.

Salad Burnett is still not flowering, I didn't realise that it flowers in it's second year.  Well at least I hope it will and give us seeds for the circle next year, if there is one.

I was hoping to save seeds from Black Opal cherry tomato, but need to research further whether this one is OP or hybrid.  Maybe save seeds and grow next year, then decide.  Should be obvious next year whether this delicious tomato is OP.

Are people interested in cherry tomatoes?  Had a bit of a cherry grow-out this year and could offer 'Old Red Cherry'  and an Amish variety 'Millie Yoder's Little Grape' if people like.

The picture of glass gem corn and Ethiopian kale on the seed circle page look super.  Yes, it is getting exciting.  Thank you to everybody for putting a bit of their garden aside and taking time to grow seeds for the circle.

Wow who's been busy!!!!   :blob7:

I can't find any reference to Black Opal being a hybrid, nothing on the breeders site http://www.gourmetgenetics.com/tomato/opal.html , or RHS http://mygarden.rhs.org.uk/blogs/graham_rice/archive/2012/10/28/tomato-black-opal-new-black-cherry-tomato-from-dobies-and-suttons.aspx,  seed packet, suttons or dobies selling the plants, or sites in America. But I'm sure I have read previously it is a F1, but no trace now so maybe not? Rossela is another from the same stable, T&M lists it as an F1 http://www.thompson-morgan.com/vegetables/vegetable-seeds/tomato-seeds/tomato-rosella/tt38814TM , Kings http://www.kingsseeds.com/vegetable_seeds/Tomato%20Rosella/P-14865 doesn't?

I can send you some Black Opal from Fothergil's to grow alongside as a comparison?

Further to jayb's post, the Yabloki na Snegu tomato is "in progress" but looking good.  I'll also be offering another bush variety Sibirskiy Skorospelyi (Siberian Early).  We enjoyed both of these in a family taste test at the weekend, although, if I'm honest, our regular home-grown favourite Latah just had the edge!  :happy7:

Unfortunately, the Leningrad Early plants which I had I decided not to continue with as there seemed to be quite a lot of variation between them.

Scratch that - I hadn't yet read Jeannine's post before replying to your earlier seed offer.

So they are OP  :toothy10:  Brill!  Would therefore like to stick seeds into this year's seed parcel for everybody.  Had one plant from JayB   :sunny: and one that I subsequently took as cutting from the first plant.  Both are fruiting.  JayB, would you like to do a combined seedsave on this one like last year on the Black Icicle?

I had one early fruiting truss in the greenhouse, then nothing for a while, then lots of them late August/September and still going.  The trusses are very large.

The plant from the rooted sideshoot was fruiting much later- late September and still going.  So far resisting blight outdoors well.

Hi
I'm new to this so hope I'm in the right place. I have, firstly, plenty of seed saved from a very good year with my District Nurse heritage climbing French beans. For those who don't know they produce very vigorous plants - over 8 ft tall plant - and are excellent croppers of flat, succulent pods heavily flushed with purple. The flavour and tenderness are, in my opinion, excellent too. They freeze well and produce finely mottled seeds which are really good for bean cooking. My mate sent me 8 seeds which all germinated well. I am happy to do the same in small packets. I have plenty drying off at the moment so they will be ready in a month or so.

Does anyone have any of the purple pea variety called Lancashire Lad. The HSL have stopped doing them in favour of an older but green Lancashire Lad that they say is the genuine original of this variety.

Thank
Rob

Please do put the shark's fin in. If people have it already they can always swop it again. Mine were still in pots when I did my back in., so I ended up losing the seed.

The old Lancashire Lad is a good pea, but I no longer have seed. The new one would be more than welcome as well, of course, if anyone has any!

YOHOOO!?
Are we getting ready yet for bagging and sending seeds forward? Do we know total number of members for this years circle?

Little update.. White Cherokee corn didn't make it.. :BangHead: The cobs did get pollinated well but they didn't mature enough. If only the spring would have been slightly warmer and slightly earlier so I could have got the plants growing that little bit better early on...having longer autumn didn't compensate  :BangHead:
I was also promising some hulless pumpkin seeds for swap...well...I opened the hand pollinated ones and the seeds inside weren't what I was expecting...and those pumpkins that were left to bees to pollinate had loooooovely seeds inside...something went wrong there :icon_scratch:
BUT...I have squashes that I have pollinated and just cut open one of them...TONS of lovely plump seeds!! :icon_cheers:..and (burb!) the squash was lovely too :toothy10:

So relieved to actually have something to send in! And am getting organised for next year with some overwintering cauliflowers in the greenhouse so I do not have to worry about  cross pollination. :happy7:

Have been cutting into the Striped Custard Marrow squashes last week.  Had 3 isolated/handpollinated fruits, one only has ten good seeds, but the others have many more plump seeds.  So, there are enough for all in the circle     Given that these are meant to be a summer squash, I was pleasantly surprised how nice they taste now.  Their light yellow sweet flesh is much denser than courgettes and they are fibreless.

Yesterday I harvested the last Mouse Melons aka Melothria Scabra.  After the first sowing was decimated by slugs, the second attempt made good growth.  Once these got going, they were quite rampant although the plants are very slender.  They were squashed into a corner in the greenhouse, but they don't mind a bit of crowding and gave lots of fruits for many weeks.  Not sure what the best method for harvesting seed is.  I have fermented one batch and washed, then air dried another.  Will put a mixture of both into the packets for the circle.

Hope we all had a much better year and a good seed harvest.  As always some things will not have worked out, that's too bad but it happens.

All seed saving information is located together in one place, at the bottom of each year page so that everybody can read about the theory of what they would like to grow for the circle that year.  As this blog is a collaborative effort, everybody in the group can be put on edit privileges by Jayb  and add or correct.

For 2013 the info reads:

Seed Saving for Schools from Heritage Seed Library, but there is very good information for everybody, not just students:

Brief guidelines - their list of selfpollinated vegetables are the easy ones for seedsaving beginners.  however 'beans' is too unspecific because runnerbeans and broadbeans cross quite a lot and only one variety should be grown or the flowers should be bagged and handpollinated in an allotment situation where there are lots of other runnerbeans and broadbeans around.  French beans can cross, but it does not happen too often:

Fine by me; I've got everything dried that isn't going to rot (my runner bean seeds were a disaster), so I can soon sort out what to send. How many people are on the list this year?

I am afraid that I have to give up on my offer of Shark's Fin Melon. I've cut up a couple (still the 2012 ones) and I really do not think the seed is viable. Although I have 6 more!! I cannot keep cutting them up until used the mountain of flesh from the last one.
However my contribution - all bagged up and ready are

Brighstone Dwarf French bean (original from Galina)

http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/assets/hsl/dwarf_french_bean_brighstone.jpg
The bean comes from the IOW where it was  supposed to have come ashore after a shipwreck and grown there for many years (HSL info)

District Nurse climbing French bean  (original from Galina)
http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/assets/hsl/cfb_district_nurse.jpg
Given to a district Nurse by an elderly lady in Cardiff
Pretty lilac flowers followed by dramatically coloured pods, green splashed with blue (HSL info)

Purple Tepee dwarf French bean (Dobies) I like this variety because it is easy to germinate and reliable. Lovely black pods which go dark green when cooked
http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/images/large_db_pics/large/vebea2385_2.jpg  (BBC)

Black sugarsweet Turnip  (HSL) interesting dark colour almost like the snake skin maple! I failed the first year as where I live turnips are winter veg and swedes the summer one, so I grew it in the wrong season. Last year it did well as a spring sowing. I believe I did a good job in netting the plants so hopefully they will be true, but as you know I am new to this seed saving stuff and it is the first brassica I have tried to save- so please "rogue out" any oddities

I'll be glad to get District Nurse. I had some seed a few years ago but none of it generated. It's been an odd year; don't worry about the shark's fin seed.

Where are we with this? I need to know whether to reserve seeds for this circle or to add to other circles.

*I am happy to do the admin for this circle if JayB can't do it at the moment - just let me know.

No, it hasn't happened yet Nigel. Jayb was unwell and postponed it to January.  I pm'ed her a week or so ago and offered my assistance, but I haven't heard back yet.  Does anybody know how Jayb is?

OK, 14 packets of each type of seed it is.  Filling and labelling here as fast as I can.  Will send you the seeds asap Jayb.  If we all do this, the swap returns could be received by mid to late February and that is still plenty early for sowing.

I am putting the seeds into a large, padded, self addressed/stamped envelope (which is my return envelope), and use an outer sleeve on top, with your address on, to send to you.  Thank you for your PM with all the information.

So happy that this is going ahead.  Thank you Jayb.

I need to get to the allotment and pick up some of my seeds, but I haven't been well the last few days. The rat-tailed radish seeds are fine, and so are the peas, but the only bean I saved this year which seems to have a decent germination rate is Trail of Tears, and it's probably too soon to put that in again. The others are smelly and nasty, and about one in six is viable!

If people are interested in another seed circle we can start pretty soon  :happy7: I've already short-listed a few varieties I'd like to grow for it!
I haven't put up a thread yet as I thought it might be best to round this one up first? Although I can get one started if people are itchy to get their names down  :blob7:

No rush Robert, when you are able  I've suggested a cut of date of Feb 15 to have received seed parcels by, is this ok for you? I lost some bean seeds too it was just too wet. Peas and rat tails will be just fab, you could always add some beans next year if you are joining in again.

Just finished packing here and the seeds will go in the post tomorrow.  Don't worry Robert.  As it happens I have grown out the rare white seeded Cherokee Trail of Tears this year to renew my seed stock and ended up with plenty for everybody in the circle.  This is a mutation that happened well over a decade ago now in Mr Yeoman's garden.  A couple of other beans, peas, tomatoes, lettuce, melothria and a pattypan squash for the circle.

Yes please, sign me up for 2014 too.

This is getting exciting indeed.  But at this stage I have absolutely no idea what to grow for next year's circle.  Well maybe, the long promised salad burnet herb will actually produce seeds .  Oh and the rare pea Sugar Lord, resurrected from near extinction by goodlife

I will also complete my little variety descriptions on the mini-catalogue over the next few days.  If anybody has difficulty uploading their information or photos, I am happy to help.

This is what has been uploaded so far:

Don't worry,  It is a 2-step process.  First upload the picture to the website, then go to the place in the text where the picture is to go and upload add the picture into the text.  Last step (if the picture is too big) is to click on the picture and a task bar comes up and you select size M (medium) from the task bar.  Then 'save' all your work and you are done.

I will have a look and add the picture of Cuban Black if you haven't done it yet.

Don't know whether you are added.  When you are, go to the site, to 2013 seed parcel page, at the top of the page is a pencil button which starts your edit.  Made your additions, then press save.

Give it a try.

I did load the Cuban black into image 'gallery'...it is that last step that doesn't work...I can put the picture for the correct place but there doesn't come any task bars to alter the size...I'm just stuck with enormous photo. There has been other few things with the document editing that haven't quite worked out and been having problems. Maybe it is my computer....I just don't have the energy nor mental capacity now to dive into small details. Last night I already spent several hours clearing some unwanted 'free stuff' from my puter, 'stuff' that wasn't supposed to be loaded there in first place... :BangHead:..just one click from finger and these 'freebies' too over... :BangHead:
ARGGGH :angry4: I think I've managed to solve that 'not so little problem' out..

It was me
I'm still having problems viewing the uploaded pictures file, about half are just blurry and won't load? I hope you don't mind Goodlife, I copied your picture to my puter and made the file size a bit smaller and then uploaded it again, seemed to work. I've been adding mine straight from flicker as most of them were already there. I haven't found one of Green Zebra yet though!

 Hi Ruud, good to hear from you. They are usually fairly quick coming from you, around a week perhaps. There was that parcel in Jeannine's swap you posted back to me that got opened by customs before they sent it on and that did take a while!

Have uploaded another photo and this is how it works.  When the large photo appears, go to the bottom left corner of the photo with the scroll bars, then click into photo and you will see the task bar, which gives you the option for S M L photos.  If you are looking at other places in a large photo, that task bar is there, but hidden from view.

By the way, when the photo is clicked, although it is very large, it still has 'handles'  ie dots in the corners, which you can click and drag to make the picture smaller in the same way as you make any other picture smaller.  For example, drag the top right dot towards bottom left direction will make the picture smaller.  This is what I used to do before I discovered the task bar.
Hope this helps.

I bought mine on the internet they were a lot cheaper as they were school dinner money packets. Ok for intended use but not very good for the seeds so had to sellotape as well.
Title: Re: Seed Sharing Circle 2013
Post by: markfield rover on February 04, 2014, 14:01:56
Yes the Sellotape is an issue , there is someone here who does origami packets  that really work, the only other packets I might look into are those you use for diamonds and precious stones.

Post by: goodlife on February 04, 2014, 14:07:28
I buy brown seed envelopes to store my seeds in....just like the wilko's ones but blank. They are not expensive but like PL said...they need little bit of cellotape on corners for smaller seeds.
Zip lock bags that I send my seeds in for circle are not expensive neither...not ideal for long term storage, but they are lighter and take less room for posting.

This comment stayed in my head when I was tidying up desk draws...and then I saw some pink paper that I had forgotten...
And now I've got one lot of seed envelopes  ready for circle's next 'call out'..PINK! :icon_cheers:
And they are looking very cheery from normal brown or clear plastic ones....must do more and different colours too..hmmm...I must dig deeper, who knows what I have stashed away... :glasses9:

I'm getting there slowly. I've parcelled up two peas so far; Robinson, which is a tall wrinkled pea, and Mummy White, a very rare one. It seems to have been popular around the 1820's, and then effectively disappeared. It survived in the States, and I managed to get some seed from there last year. It's a crown pea, with white flowers and small round peas. Then there's Munchen Bier, a rat-tailed radish, and I should be able to manage one or two more peas.

I don't have access to the seed swap page, by the way, so at the moment I can't add anything to it.

Jayb, I'm sorry to create extra work for you, but is there any chance you could fix the two links I tried to put in for the two tomato varieties yabloki na snegu and sibirskiy skorospelyi?  They are in as plain text - when I tried inserting links I couldn't get it to work.

Same here.  Just to add to the list above that JayB has shared the seedsaving for Black Opal tomato to give us seeds from more plants.  Also I had Shark's Fin Melon seeds as well as butternut squash in the seed packet from NigelB.

What a treat and what a super choice of different types too.

Blimey, you cleaned your lettuce seeds much better than I did,  goodlife!  Would you like to share your method?  Not that it matters, but yours look so much more professional than mine!   :icon_cheers:

Have showed OH your envelopes, Markfield Rover - he was well impressed! Stunning!  :angel11:

What a treasure trove indeed!  And by the way, the first seeds have already been sown

Thank you again all.

Galina , glad you liked the packets, I have started a collection, I like the Thomas Etty ones, as a child I can remember Carter's seed packets looking quite Victorian and not in vintage  way.

Sorry Robert, I meant to message you. I think from another thread you were looking for some more Blackpod Runners, which I said I'd send.  The Broadies are my mix, all grown together the last couple of years, I know you are developing your own selection and thought these might be a useful addition.

Just wanted to say another big thankyou to everybody.  All seeds sown is coming up nicely (a few things have been held over to next year, but I included carried over seeds from a year ago).  The quality of circle seed and the germination is so much better than from commercial packets.  And of course the seed has been grown locally and not produced in another continent which makes a big difference.

If I single out just one, for example Chilacayote aka Shark's fin melon from two sources, both came up beautifully.  It is a joy to sow these seeds and watch them grow.  :sunny:

Just to echo what Galina said.  :sunny: I have some fantastic plants here this year, mostly from sowing single seeds in the firm belief that 'our' seeds are the freshest available.... And I don't think I've had a single failure so far. Even the seeds sown straight into the soil are flourishing.  :glasses9:

You lot are fantastic! :icon_cheers:  Thank you all again!

Here too, plus I am sowing with success seeds from 2011, makes you wonder about the seed companies , and that makes me like Real Seeds even more. Just come from the greenhouse even before the kettle goes on - all that germination ...good for the soul I reckon .

Ian, thank you for Biskopen's Graaert.  They are delightful.  Very unusual pea colour shining through maturing pods.  And surprisingly, they are a mangetout.  Very nice indeed.  The tallest in the pea patch this year nearly 8ft with all the rain we had.  Quite late maturing after the earlies have gone - so good!  Many of my vines are perishing in this heat, but these are still looking good.  To have a variety that extends the pea season is a delight.  Thank you for the seeds.
Title: Re: Seed Sharing Circle 2013

Forgot to say - the seeds look light to dark brown when the pods are still at edible mangetout state, although the darker brown peas are better shelled out.  Later the seeds dry to dark purple.  I think I mentioned that this variety was the tallest growing this year.  The pods started developing relatively late, but suddenly there was an abundance.  At the moment they are gamely struggling to continue against mildew and still producing new pods in abundance.

Visually stunning too, because the dark seeds are actually visible through the green pods, especially on the early developing ones.  As you said Ian, not a very sweet variety, but I have never seen anything like it!     :sunny:

Glad they are a hit! I didn't grow any this year; too many other varieties to try out. Magnum Bonum did well for me, and I like Skansk Margart which I'm only getting round to trying this year. I think it is from three years ago. Goodlife's, if I remember correctly.

Can anyone help me identify some peas. I got them from one of the circles- no idea which- but they were labelled "Blauschokker"   . It is a large green mange tout, with slightly brown flecks but more a muddy brown at the moment.
I can find Blauwschokker on the internet  which is a purple podded and definitely not what I grew.
Has anyone else had these seeds and can help identify them. If not I will happily grow them anyway and Thank you to the donor  :happy7:

I think there may have been a packing error.  'Eat Me', a large mangetout pea, came from the same source as Blauwschokker. This may have been the source of the confusion.  All my peas labelled  Blauwschokker were also like you describe them, not like they should be.  Too bad - these things can happen

Thanks Petra, that makes sense as they looked so similar when growing, and the peas did too.

A very late addition, regarding the Melothria scabra seeds I added to this circle:

Gleaned from Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10203813781721858&set=gm.795385650541377&type=1&theater

I appears you can overwinter the roots frost free (like runner bean roots) and resprout them the following year for an earlier crop.

How good is that!  I only just found out

Just wanted to upload a picture of lettuce Spotted Cos.  I'm just blown away how pretty this one is.  Need to separate into individual plants with care (in a bowl of water works best) and plant with bottle cloches.

Such a lovely looking lettuce  :blob7:  Thankyou Goodlife.  By the way I found out that its alternative names are Trout or Forellenschluss.  I had heard of Forellenschluss  (trout's tail) and not realised that this is it.  See for yourself - amazing colours:

Oh, I didn't know that name...thank you for that!
It is rather 'pretty' lettuce and the colours will intensify one they get proper amount of sun on them. I had some that were almost 'purple' but with green spots..and some with opposite effect.  One visitor who came to my GH when I was growing the lettuce in GH said...'what is that then?'..didn't recognize it being lettuce.. :laughing7:
