Title: Debris Netting
Post by: redimp on August 26, 2007, 22:56:30
Is it any good?  I can get hold of 2mx50m pieces for about £28 which is a lot cheaper than enviromesh - which I just cannot afford.

Also - what would be the best colour?  Blue,  Orange, Black, Yellow or Red

Ta :)  Ain't started a thread on here for years.

I've only ever seen it in green and at twice your price. I think it's something you can sometimes scrounge or get cheap from surplus/salvage stores. I got some that way but only used it for greenhouse shading so don't know about netting crops.  It's robust enough anyway.

i bought some off ebay to use this year.   i have found it very useful on the whole but not foolproof by any means. some butterflys still get in (dont ask me how i have no idea!) but the number is small and most of my crops have been fine under it.  the only real problem i have is that the purple sprouting is now getting quite tight under it so i shall have to remove it before much longer.  i think it is not as good as enviromesh but as a cheaper option it is worth the money. mine is green but i cant think that colour is an issue. :)

think i've just found the same ad redclanger.  From Bristol ?

i'm thinking maybe definitely worth a punt, i've often wondered where to buy the stuff.  Asthetically, I'm thinking green. We've got a few days yet to decide.

Was gonna post a link once I had bought some - honest :-[ ;D

With the colour thing, pretty sure that blue is a no-no as plants don't thrive under blue light.  The orange and yellow I agree would be a bit of an eyesore.  What I was really wondering was, would black be better because it absorbs more warmth or would it not make the slightest bit of difference?

What is the mesh size?

Post by: redimp on August 27, 2007, 21:10:04
About 5mm long by about 1-2mm high.  It is quite tough stuff by the looks of it.

I was up at the airport tonight, seeing off the daughter back home and had a feel of the same stuff which was surrounding a bit of building work.  The mesh was tiny and felt quite substantial.

Also protects against wind and rain, I'm sure I could use 50m of the stuff somewhere.

I have used debris netting for quite a while ..Some I have is 3 years old and is still going strong...

I also have built a couple of walk in tunnels with it one to grow brassicas and one to harden off all plants I take from greenhouses ...

Here is where I get mine from.

That's the place !!  50m coming my way!

Did you just half the width for those tunnels growmore ?

I was thinking of getting the sewing machine out and making a walk-in something for the fruit bushes.  Would have to give the ends of the tunnel a bigger mesh for bees and things though.

do they protect against frost as well, or would fleece still be better ?

Now I know!

Only one limitation - 2m. Only just covers a Brussel Sprout. But not a PSB.

Elsewise, looks great!

"had a feel of the same stuff"  Mrs KP - now we all think that is perfectly normal behaviour, but did you get any strange looks at the airport as you were stroking the scaffold netting ;)

My mum gave me some yellow netting, wasn't sure what to do with until the PSB outgrew their enviromesh tunnel.  I have build a cage, used the netting for the sides and put ordinary garden net on the roof.

I'll take a piccie to show what I mean.

pmsl smp.  sadly the site appeared to be vacant of any other substantial stuff and I was left just to feel their netting.   :P

people might have been looking at me a bit oddly, but my daughter thinks i'm odd anyway so she wasn't at all purturbed ........ the OH on the other hand, started walking more briskly.

50m on its way to Lincs too.  Wish I had read Tim's comments first though - would have got the 3mx50m for £37 :-\

Piccie of the PSB house as promised.  This shows how I used the 2m netting for the sides and ordinary mesh for the roof.

Seems to be doing the trick ;D

I've to pick up something at the post office this morning, but I doubt it's that.  I told them just to throw it over the gate !

Thanks, Jim - I think I'm converted!

Presumably safe against Carrot Root Fly? But not Flea Beetle?

Sarah (?) spoke of 'not foolproof'. I imagine that it was not tight to the ground? Even then, the little b*****s can sidle in.

indeed Tim, that is the only way in. i have started shoring up the edges with soil.  i wish i had bought the three meter width; my psb is a good meter high now and i will have to uncover it. not too worried about the butterflies now but the pigeons.....

how much light does it diffuse, it looks quite shady  ???
Title: Re: Debris Netting
Post by: sarah on September 01, 2007, 13:12:34
it does diffuse the light a bit i am sure but my brassicas seem to do fine under it; it doesnt seem to be a problem at all. i will try and find a pic and work out how to post it.

Much the same as greenhouse shading - & everything seems to flourish under that?

mood i'm in tonight, he'd not get his boots off ...........

shame there's no-one in the house but me and a bottle of rose !  (to which I've added some blended homegrown blueberries and strawberries - bloody lovely i tell thee).

methinks this should gravitate to the watershed!

I have made a fruit cage with debris netting. Its ideal. If you know any scaffolders or anyone that works on a building site, its worth asking if they have some you can have or buy.  We managed to buy a huge roll of it for much less than you can get in the shops.

How do bees get in to pollinate the fruit?
Title: Re: Debris Netting
Post by: tim on September 03, 2007, 06:55:50
Good thinking. Do as growers do & put a hive inside!!

Any advance on my query about Carrot Root Fly??

We left a door way flap so we could get in /out of the caged area. They must of got in through there. Or maybe they get through the mesh.
Only problem is its bright blue, bit of an eyesore really. Does the job though!
Keeps the birds away from the berries.

This is the blokes next door but one  to me .He grows soft fruit in this poly tunnel frame covered with debris netting ..Front is left open till bees have done their job then he puts it on to keep birds out when the  fruit is ripening.  Bees etc can't get through the net if cage is shut up..

This would be high enough for your sprouts and PSB Tim  :)

Well, mine has just arrived and I cannot see it throwing down any more shade than any similarly guaged netting.  Looks good stuff too.  Just off to post positive feedback on e-bay ;D

Does the netting 'run' or fray when cut?
Title: Re: Debris Netting

When I cut it it did not fray.  Still minded to hem it though.

But thanks.

I just asked a builder and he delivered a 100m X 2m roll and didn't charge.

That was 2 years ago and the stuff seems indestructable.

Just realised - all along the black bands there are slots plenty big enough for a Cabbage White??

The stuff I have does not have the slots along the middle and I use the ones along the side to peg it down so not a problem - in fact a bonus. :)

I have been wondering about this debris netting. I have open parkland round the side of my garden. Nettles, Bindweed and brambles grow through the fence, not to mention that horrible "sticky weed".  I have a Paling fence lined with rabbit wire. I was going to put up a 6' high fence inside the landlord's fence to stop the weeds getting through. He has refused permission. I have to have the same fencing as the other cottages. I am fed up with going round cutting back the encroaching jungle to stop my Granddaughter, and Great Grand daughter from getting scratched and stung. Turn your back for a few days and it's in. I wondered if I stapled some of this inside the fence, it would stop the brambles and nettles coming through, and wouldn't be as noticable as a larch lap fence.  Do you reckon it would stop the invasion?

If it stops debris, it might !  It must be pretty strong.  Just my tuppenceworth.
