Title: cherry rum

we have about 5lb of cherries and a large bottle of rum. if i combine the two and add some brown sugar will i get a nice christmas tipple?
do i need to get proper kilner jars or will screw top jars do?
also, are there any hard and fast rules about fruit/sugar/booze ratios?

Would be lovely I would imagine!
Screw top jars work fine, I do my sloe gin in a plastic sweet jar!
Watched this whilst eating my lunch today, it may help.

(ps: don't forget to dip the cherries in chocolate when you drink the rum! YUM!!)

I have done similar but with brandy!  All of the slightly bruised cherries went into a big jar, filled it with brandy and have left it in my cupboard.  Been in there for about 6 weeks now and already it is dark red in colour!  I tend to add the sugar before final bottling so I can do it to suit.

Just done this Tara, using a Rumtoph jar, speciial for the purpose, made in Germany, a layer of fruit, then sugar, then rum or any spirits and keep repeating. Leave for several months.Keep it weighted down with a saucer, or if a saucer won 't fit, use a large mug as I've done . Have been picking cherries for the last week, run out of ideas on how to use 'em. Do you think sweet jars filled with syrup would serve the same purpose as rum jars.

I tried it with a Kilner jar, cherries and cheap nasty vodka.  Come Christmas the cherries were a pale bleached pink, and my cheeks were a rich rosy red :D!

Seriously though, I was worried about fermentation at first, which may be an issue if you add sugar, but the 40% alcohol straight onto the cherries didn't bubble at all. 

I kept it in an eye-level kitchen cupboard (if temperature matters :-\).
