Title: Where are your toms now?
Post by: caroline7758 on April 24, 2011, 17:36:28
Mine are in 3" pots on my kitchen windowsill and growing like mad in this hot weather. With the forecast showing more of the same, if a bit cooler, I'm wondering whether to risk putting them out in my unheated greenhouse. I reckon if they got a "check" it wouldn't be a bad thing. They are all about 5" tall.
What do you think?

Mine are in 3 inch pots in an unheated greenhouse potted on from modules today. They were started in the greenhouse so have never had any heat and have been fine.

Mine have been in an unheated greenhouse for at least 6 weeks; and my first ones went into 12 inch pots yesterday and are now in the courtyard.

I have to grow in pots in the greenhouse due to it being on concrete, so am waiting to get some WRM in the next week or so and then the biggest are going into their final pots in there.

In the cold greenhouse, well fleeced every night and my fingers crossed - got fruit on the Gartenperle.....I think I've pushed it a bit far this year.....

Window sill, lean to, plastic greenhouse and two in front garden.  Will see which ones do better.  One lot still in seed tray, but others have been potted up into larger pots.  Fingers crossed, don't grow them at the allotment any more, just in pots in front garden in the sun.  Easier to move in the pots inside if it suddenly turns cold.

Mine have all been in polytunnel for the last 3 weeks. Planted a few into their final positions yesterday. Large pot with bottom cut out into growbags. I've also stuck 3 into the ground outside under old sweet jars, well they've got 2 chances lol

 Going to finalise rest today.

Mine were getting very hot in their mini greenhouses, and when I went away at the weekend and couldn't shade/air/water them, I moved them out to the sheltered but shady patch at the bottom of the steps. They seem happy.

Plenty of flowers on them, so I'm optimistic - as usual Tigerella lovely big things, but I'm especially looking forward to the plum lemon this year.

In the Greenhouse too.  Ouch it got a bit cold last night  3.7C ...... they won't have liked that much.  Although the greenhouse is in a warm spot in the garden fortunately.

Interesting point here - I have always understood that it was better for the plant to have filled its 3" pot before going to its final position?

And, elsewhere, something I have never achieved, it should have a flower truss on it before potting up.

Comments??

Hi Tim thats how ours were. This year they got trusses much earlier for us.Other years trusses or not they get potted up when they have filled their pots. Have been put in their final pots for 4 weeks now but only in the GH. We dont grow any outside now cos of blight even on Shirley which is supposed to have some resistance

I used to leave ours for the first flower truss to form before putting into the final big pots - the theory as I understood it being that you get earlier fruit. I think maybe some root restriction is supposed to make it form fruit sooner instead of keeping on growing for the sky??

I decided in the end it was better to pot on at the right time for the roots. Maybe fruiting is a bit later that way but I think for the long-term health and vigour of the plants consistently potting on as soon as the roots fill the pot is a better method, for me, anyway.

I do pot on gradually in stages and make sure the last 3" pot is filled with good strong roots before they go into the big pots.

I have green fruits on my cherries now - but I think that is the weather.

Mine are now in their final positions in the greenhouse at last, all about a foot high, most with a first truss of flowers. Job done! ;D

What precision, Wiltshire Wallah - & I love the designer colour!!
But, as with me - & others -  10-12" & no flowers yet. I know it doesn't matter in the long run, but I do like to get to the bottom of things.

I note with shame that one of my bags is out of line!!

There's always an upside?  Struggling to keep it operating after 36 years of no TLC & being distorted by a foot in the 1987 Fish disaster.  Never been quite the same since!!

Noticed first green tomato on Delicious in poly. ;D[sorry no pic- must work on the technology or find a grandchild] Wrapped the outdoor ones in fleece tonight cos its pretty nippy after the rain. NW wind and we're exposed. 5 more plants[lidls mixed cherries] are snugged back indoors and still waiting their slot in the garden. Regards from North Lincs

Your greenhouse makes me sooo jealous Tim!!!  ;)

PS However, to cheer myself up, though my greenhouse is a fraction of the size of yours (12' x 4') I have tomatoes 2-3' high, several with green fruit (Apero, Stupice, can't remember the other without going to check).  ;D

Much the same, Tony - for the earlier ones.

4' plant size, of course.

I have to ask you Tim, what is the monster growing in the foreground of the 2nd picture?

In the Ghouse - about 2 1/2 foot tall some with flowers and some fruit appearing. In buckets at home distinctly smaller, far leaner, and no sign of flowers

Tried them last year & they were very helpful for drainage. But I've aged a lot since then & find them labour intensive in that they have to be emptied & refilled - & they take up room, even when 'unrolled'.

They're available buy one get one free!!

Glad I didn’t buy them after all

Don't take my word for it - I have different capabilities & needs.

Read their reviews - the theory is good & they are well used commercially.

If you should want to try, they are still on offer!!

Your greenhouse is huge Tim.  Are they all tomatoes what do you do with them all, or are you growing for Tesco?   ;D

I really must get my greenhouse put up.

All except 12 Cucumbers & 2 Courgettes.

With 3 here & 5 next door during holidays, & tit for tat in the village, we rarely have a real glut.

Mine finally goot ot a couple of days ago into their final containers. I am using self watering home made Global buckets this year as  the greenhouse is a few miles away and can`t guarantee I can get there everyday.

I was ill for a week a couple of weeks ago and John  went down to water my tomatoes still in small pots, not enough, so I lost a lot that were going outside for the foodbank but managed to save enough for inside. My new Dwarf collection was at home so safe. They are in the ir final spots too now. Very precious.

All toms in GH doing well..lots greenens. Majority of the cordons have now 2 set trusses and further 2 in flower. Now I'm just waiting now for the first ones starting to chance colour.."time is slow for those who wait.." ::)
I planted 20 odd plants outside yesterday..now that the weather has finally turned back to summer.
All those are blight 'resistant' varieties that I'm trialing this years. Time will tell how they will take UK summer.
Container toms have loads of greenens but not a one have started ripening yet..early day I suppose..we did have cold spell so that slowed things down..
