No, I ususally wait until the middle of March and they seem to do ok. The overwintering ones are perking up now and I'll give them their usual dose of fish, blood and bone in a couple of weeks. Seems to work wonders.

No.

Might do shallots soon, but the onions can wait a couple of weeks.

There's plenty more stuff to do yet, you know - at least there is on my plot! Early potatoes, broad beans, peas, lettuce in the frame; mange-tout & sugar snaps to sow, parsnips to chit, pelargonium cuttings to pot on, petunias to sow.........

parsnips to chit,

can someone explain that one? I thought you just sowed seed straight into the ground?

some folks start them this way, by putting them on wet kitchen paper in a take-away plastic box in the airing cupboard. I did it this way last year and they did all sprout.    ;D

(parsnips to chit that is!)

I put some in yesterday that an old timer(that is older than me)lol gave us from his own saved seed. Last year his parsnips were the best on the site. When I asked what variety they were he said it had been that long ago that he bought the first packet that he had forgotten. He  always leaves acouple in at the end of the season for his seed. I'm going to do that this year. At least you know that the seed is fresh. Will post a pic when they start to come up

Shallots and garlic went in 4 weeks ago.

100 each of Red Baron and Sturon sets went into modules in the greenhouse last week, and I've been sowing seed for about 6 weeks now - but my Mammoth failed to germinate again.

This is my first year growing onions and shallots (and veg in general :-X) Ive been wondering when I should put them in, can they stand any frost at all? I live near Aberdeen but we get some really cold snaps here, 3 weeks ago we had 15" of snow overnight!!  :o

Yes, i've put some onions in but i rooted them in small pots a month ago before i went on vacation to get some well deserved sun. They have taken off like wild fire due to the mild weather down here. I checked them this pm as we had a reasonable frost last night and they seem fine.

I put my sets in yesterday: 4 rows of red (thought they were red baron but the label said red something else) and 8 rows of white (sturon). Will no doubt be replanting them next weekend after the pigeons have had a go at pulling them out. They didn't seem to be bothered by the cold last year so I'm hoping they all survive, although I have some fleece standing by in case of emergency.

It was very exciting as they are the first thing I have put in the ground this year!

I planted onions and shallots in October with the garlic.....bit of an experiment which considering the wet and cold I thought it would fail but the onions were up at the first sign of better weather. Last week there was still no sign of the shallots so I resigned myself to replanting and bought an extra bag. Yesterday about half the shallots had suddenly appeared and closer inspection revealed others were on their way.

I will be planting the rest of the shallots next week unless we're having another cold snap.

Sorry for the Q's!

I just sink them about half way up enough for the roots to be in the ground firmly
