Title: Peas in raised bed.
Post by: Justy on March 31, 2009, 15:02:56
I have just planted some peas in my new raised bed and it wasn't til I had finished sowing them that I wondered if I had done it right.  I planted them staggered in a trench 5 cm apart and did them in rows across the bed (the rows were about a foot apart).

Do you think this will be ok?  I have never really grown peas before and not in a bed.  They are Kelvedon Wonder (if it makes any difference!)

Sounds fine to me Justy. :) You just need some supports when they get taller. Sticks or small canes will do the trick. And dont forget to net them.

And watch out for slugs, they love small juicy new pea seedlings

Thats a bit close together as you will find when you come to harvest them. Don't worry too much the will grow OK it will just be that bit more difficult to harvest them.

Then again if you have only sown two rows you will be able to get either side of the double row to harvest.

I plant them in rows roughly 3ft apart, see here; http://www.thegardenersalmanac.co.uk/Data/Peas/Peas/peas.html

Thanks everyone. Luckily the bed is only 1metre square so will be able to reach all round to harvest.

I have put chicken wire over the top of the bed so should keep out the birdies!

Tee Gee - your slide shows are brilliant.  So much information transmitted so clearly ... they inspire confidence and take out all the scary mystery.  Thank you!

My peas are definitely going in this weekend, whatever the weather!
