Title: Stumpy rhubarb
Post by: caroline7758 on April 23, 2015, 20:10:20
Most of my rhubarb seems to be short and stumpy - not many long, thin stems. Anyone know what might cause this? The leaves look as big as ever!

Just wait till we get proper downpour....and things get moving, the stalks won't be stumpy no more! :icon_cheers:

Mine are exactly same at the moment.

I agree with goodlfe mine was looking stumpy so i gave it copious amounts of water this week because it's been so warm and dry and it's now looking much improved.

I'd post a picture of mine, but you'd need a magnifying glass to see it.

My rhubarb has been much better since I started mega amounts of feeding prompted by posts on here.   I put piles of weeds underneath them all summer.  Dandelions are particularly good.  Each plant then got a bucket of manure as well.  I then put a compost bin over a couple of plants.  The stems are two feet long with nice thick stems.

I am a fan of Timpany Early does very well for me starts in February and certainly March.

You won't need many of those to fill pan up. Mine does grow like that too..normally...now they are just waiting some rain, which has just started while I'm typing, and then there is no holding them back...my rhubarbs will look more like 'gunnera'  :glasses9:

I'm so jealous!

Mine are literally a couple of 4 or 5 inch stalks, the thickness of my thumb, and the biggest leaves are smaller than my (small) hand.

Mine has gone from  stumpy to about a foot long in the last week. A bucket of water every visit seems to be the trick.
